Kai sat alone in a dimly lit room within the government facility. He had been left here for hours, told to "get comfortable." Comfortable. As if that was even possible.
Everything still felt surreal. His hair, his eyes, his very name—gone. He was Kai Skyline now. Not Akio Kita. Not the boy who fought for his friends. Not the boy who sacrificed himself to save the people he loved.
Just Kai.
He let out a slow breath, running a hand through his newly dyed hair. It still felt like his, but every time he saw the strands of black and blue, it was a reminder that he wasn't supposed to be who he was anymore.
A knock at the door snapped him out of his thoughts.
Before he could respond, the door opened, and President Cross walked in. She wasn't alone this time. Behind her stood a man dressed in a dark military uniform, his presence commanding. His sharp eyes locked onto Kai immediately, as if analyzing him.
"Kai," the president said smoothly, as if the name had always been his. "I'd like you to meet General Elias Hargrave. He will be overseeing your training and integration into the new world."
Kai straightened, instinctively studying the man in front of him. Hargrave was tall, broad-shouldered, and had the look of someone who had seen more battlefields than he cared to count. There were no wasted movements, no unnecessary gestures. He carried himself like a warrior, not a bureaucrat.
"A pleasure," Hargrave said, though his voice was anything but warm. "You're an anomaly, you know that?"
Kai blinked. "Excuse me?"
Hargrave stepped closer, folding his arms. "No one comes out of three and a half years of cryostasis with a body this… intact. Your muscle structure, your reaction time—even your vitals suggest you've been training this entire time. Which is impossible."
Kai tensed. He had noticed it too. Ever since breaking free, his body felt… new. Like every cell had been rebuilt stronger. His movements were sharper, more efficient. He was stronger, faster, but he had no idea why.
"What are you suggesting?" Kai asked cautiously.
Hargrave smirked slightly. "That's what we're going to find out."
The president stepped in. "You have two options, Kai. You can work with us, train under General Hargrave, and learn just what you've become… or we can keep you locked up here until we understand what's happening to you."
Kai clenched his fists. The fact that she even framed it as an "option" was insulting. It wasn't a choice—it was a leash.
Still, he had no intention of rotting away in this facility. If they were going to train him, he might as well use it to his advantage.
"Fine," he said. "I'll train."
Hargrave nodded approvingly. "Good. Then let's not waste time."
The training room was unlike anything Kai had ever seen.
It wasn't just a gym—it was a battlefield. The walls were lined with simulation panels, capable of projecting real-time combat scenarios. Automated turrets and moving obstacles were scattered throughout, designed to test reflexes. The floor could shift at any moment, forcing combatants to adapt.
Hargrave stood at the center, watching as Kai stepped inside. "Show me what you can do."
Kai exhaled, rolling his shoulders. "Alright. What's the challenge?"
Hargrave smirked. "Survive."
The room came to life in an instant.
Kai barely had time to react as the floor beneath him shifted, tilting at a sharp angle. At the same time, several robotic dummies emerged from the walls, each one armed with weapons that, while non-lethal, would hurt like hell if they hit.
Kai didn't hesitate. He moved purely on instinct.
The first dummy lunged—he dodged, weaving under its blade and landing a swift kick to its chest. The impact sent it flying backward. Another came from behind—he spun, grabbing its arm and flipping it over his shoulder in one fluid motion.
A turret activated above, firing a barrage of energy blasts. Kai dove forward, narrowly avoiding the shots as he rolled into a sprint. His movements were smooth, almost automatic. His body felt weightless, like he was built for this.
He took down another dummy with a precise strike to its neck, and then—
The floor disappeared beneath him.
For a split second, he was falling. Then, without thinking, he twisted mid-air, planting his foot against the nearest wall and launching himself back onto solid ground.
He landed flawlessly.
The room powered down. The simulation ended.
Hargrave stood there, watching with an unreadable expression. "Three and a half years in ice, and you move like that?"
Kai wiped sweat from his brow. "I guess I'm just built different."
Hargrave let out a short laugh. "You might be."
Kai looked down at his hands. He had always been strong, but this was different. Something about his body had changed, evolved. It wasn't just muscle memory—it was as if he had been training all this time without realizing it.
What had happened to him in that ice?
The president's voice pulled him from his thoughts. "We'll continue running tests," she said. "Your physical ability is far beyond what we expected."
Kai nodded, still processing everything. He had agreed to train, but deep down, he knew this wasn't just about becoming stronger.
He needed answers.
And if working with them was the only way to get them… then so be it.
For now, he would be Kai Skyline.
But one day, he would find out what really happened to Akio Kita. What happened to him.
And when that day came—
He would decide for himself who he truly was.
