Chapter 7 — Syntax Error 404
Zone 404 had one rule.
If it let you enter, it did not have to let you leave.
Aoikishi stood at the mouth of the corridor with one hand against the wall.
The wall folded around his fingers.
Not inward.
Around.
For half a second, his hand appeared on the opposite side of the hallway.
Then above them.
Then nowhere.
Yamiya took one step back.
Aoikishi pulled his hand free.
"Zone 404," he said. "This is what happens when reality loses its syntax."
Kaosu looked down the corridor.
It looked disappointingly normal.
Black walls. Pale lights. A door at the far end.
"That's it?"
Aoikishi pointed toward the door.
It opened.
Another door appeared behind them.
It opened too.
Both led into the same hallway.
Kaosu looked over his shoulder.
His own back was standing fifty feet away.
"…Okay."
Nyxus leaned around him.
"You look better from that angle."
Kaosu looked at Nyxus. "I'm standing beside you."
"I know. Very disappointing."
Yamiya stepped closer to the warped wall. Her reflection appeared a second late, then walked away without her.
"What happens if someone enters?" she asked.
"They keep finding the next door," Aoikishi said. "The problem is that every door becomes the first one again."
He traced one finger along the wall.
The surface folded like paper.
"Distance resets. Direction resets. Even the reason you chose a door can be returned to its starting point."
Yamiya opened her notebook.
"So if I choose a door—"
"The corridor can return you to the moment before you chose."
Her stylus stopped.
Kaosu's expression changed slightly.
Nyxus raised his hand.
"What if I choose not to choose?"
Aoikishi looked at him.
"Then you'll remain lost with excellent philosophical justification."
Nyxus lowered his hand.
"Hostile architecture."
"Very."
Aoikishi dragged a small projection into the air.
Three recordings appeared.
Three Continuum reconnaissance teams.
The first recording showed a soldier opening a black door.
Walking through.
Opening the same door.
Walking through.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The timer beside the footage read:
05:41:18
Yamiya stared at it.
"They were inside for almost six hours?"
"Twelve seconds passed outside."
Nobody spoke.
Aoikishi changed recordings.
The second team was arguing.
The third had stopped talking entirely.
"One team eventually realized they had passed the same scratch on the wall over two thousand times."
Kaosu folded his arms.
"And?"
"They made another scratch."
Kaosu stared at him.
Aoikishi's expression remained completely serious.
"It appeared on every wall."
Nyxus whispered, "That's fucked."
"Yes."
Yamiya looked toward Aoikishi.
"Did they survive?"
"I pulled the people out."
Aoikishi dismissed the recordings.
"The paths they created are still running."
Yamiya looked back into Zone 404.
Somewhere very far down the corridor, footsteps echoed.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The exact same rhythm.
Her notebook slowly lowered.
Kaosu glanced toward Aoikishi.
"And you decided to build our headquarters around this?"
"Correct."
"That was rhetorical."
"I know."
"Why?"
Aoikishi smiled.
"Because if you spend long enough living beside broken reality, you stop freezing when reality breaks."
Yamiya wrote something down.
"Unpaid training."
"Exactly."
Kaosu shook his head.
"You're insane."
Aoikishi shrugged.
"Useful distinction."
The far door opened.
Everyone looked.
A man stepped through.
Four identical swords were strapped across his back.
Not ornate.
Not glowing.
Not legendary-looking.
Four ordinary blades in four ordinary sheaths.
He held a black coffee mug in one hand.
His face carried the deep exhaustion of someone who had spent far too much time dealing with something stupid.
He looked back at Zone 404.
Then at Aoikishi.
"Why is this hallway so fucking long?"
Silence.
Yamiya's notebook slipped half an inch through her fingers.
Kaosu blinked.
Nyxus looked from the stranger to the corridor.
Then back.
Aoikishi did not move.
That was probably the strongest reaction of all.
The stranger walked forward.
Zone 404 did not return him.
The first door remained behind him.
Then the second.
Then the third.
He simply—
left.
Kaosu stepped directly into his path.
"How did you get out?"
The stranger looked over his shoulder at Zone 404.
Then back at Kaosu.
"I walked."
Yamiya stepped closer.
"You walked."
"Yes."
"Through a recursive conceptual loop."
"Yes."
"Where every exit becomes another entrance."
The man took a drink.
"Yes."
Yamiya stared at him.
"How?"
"I put one foot in front of the other."
Nyxus made a strangled noise.
Kaosu's eye twitched.
"You think you're funny?"
The stranger looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"You do."
Nyxus turned away before Kaosu could see him laughing.
Kaosu moved closer.
"You have any idea who I am?"
"No."
Kaosu waited.
The man took another drink.
"I only remember important people."
Kaosu's aura exploded.
Red threads ripped across the floor.
The temperature in the corridor jumped.
He reached for the stranger.
Aoikishi caught Kaosu's wrist.
Hard.
Kaosu snapped toward him.
"Let go."
Aoikishi looked at Kaosu's clenched hand.
Then at Raiyo.
"He has a point."
Kaosu stared.
"What fucking point?"
Aoikishi adjusted his grip on Kaosu's wrist as casually as if they were discussing the weather.
"The median nerve shares the carpal tunnel with nine flexor tendons."
Silence.
Aoikishi continued.
"You're presenting the entire structure to a swordsman who apparently cuts relationships."
Kaosu looked down at his wrist.
Then back at Aoikishi.
"You stopped me to tell me wrist anatomy?"
"I stopped you because attacking him like that is anatomically irresponsible."
Raiyo took another sip of coffee.
"That was useful."
Kaosu looked at him.
"Do not encourage him."
Yamiya's stylus moved.
Kaosu snapped toward her.
"Why are you writing that down?"
"It was useful."
"I hate this place."
Nyxus nodded sympathetically.
"First reasonable thing you've said."
Kaosu ripped his wrist from Aoikishi's grip.
"You're both assholes."
"Three," Yamiya corrected without looking up.
Kaosu glared at her.
Aoikishi finally stepped between them.
"Enough."
Kaosu pointed around him.
"He walked into our headquarters."
The stranger raised his mug.
"The door was open."
Kaosu looked at Zone 404.
"That is not a fucking door."
"Then lock it."
Yamiya turned away.
Her shoulders moved once.
Kaosu caught it.
"Are you laughing?"
"No."
"You're terrible at lying."
The stranger walked past him.
Kaosu called after him.
"Where are you going?"
"Somewhere quieter."
"You just walked into our headquarters!"
The man looked over one shoulder.
"Exactly."
Then he disappeared around the corner.
Kaosu stared after him.
Aoikishi stared too.
But not at the man.
At the four ordinary swords across his back.
Something about them bothered him.
Not danger.
Recognition.
Or the shape of recognition.
A memory so old that only the absence around it remained.
Aoikishi's smile disappeared for less than a second.
Then it returned.
"Briefing in ten."
Kaosu pointed down the hallway.
"He better not still be here."
Aoikishi started walking.
"I suspect he'll make that decision himself."
Kaosu's chair was occupied.
That was how the fight actually started.
Raiyo sat reclined like he owned the place, one boot casually hooked over the chair's rung.
His coffee rested comfortably on the table.
Kaosu's shadow fell across the armrest.
Raiyo looked up.
"Are you lost?"
Kaosu's tone went cold.
"You're in my seat."
Raiyo glanced around as if double-checking.
"I don't see your name on it."
Kaosu stepped closer.
"Move before I make you."
"Then make me."
"Last warning."
Raiyo took another drink.
"You recycle threats. Try a new one."
Yamiya entered behind Kaosu.
She immediately opened her notebook.
"If you're going to break something, the courtyard is easier to clean."
Nyxus followed with a sandwich.
"Blood stains grout."
Yamiya looked at him.
"That was my next sentence."
"I'm learning."
Kaosu pointed at Raiyo.
"He stole my chair."
Raiyo looked down.
"Stole?"
"It's mine."
"You abandoned it."
"I went to the bathroom."
Raiyo nodded.
"Skill issue."
Nyxus nearly dropped the sandwich.
Kaosu looked at Aoikishi as he entered.
"Tell him to move."
Aoikishi examined the chair.
Then Raiyo.
Then Kaosu.
"I'm not getting involved in a custody dispute."
"It's a fucking chair."
"Then you should be coping better."
Kaosu's aura ignited.
Raiyo stood.
"Courtyard," Aoikishi said immediately.
Kaosu smiled.
Raiyo picked up his coffee.
"Fine."
Nyxus followed.
"So who gets the chair if one of them dies?"
"No one is dying," Aoikishi replied.
Nyxus frowned.
"Then what's the point?"
The courtyard was already cracked.
This saved paperwork.
Kaosu and Raiyo stood twenty paces apart.
Nyxus sat on the steps with his sandwich.
Yamiya stood beside him, notebook ready.
Aoikishi remained between the fighters.
"House rules."
He looked at Kaosu.
"No killing."
Then Raiyo.
"No permanent damage."
Kaosu cracked his knuckles.
Raiyo adjusted one of the four identical swords on his back.
Aoikishi continued.
"First person forced to yield loses."
Nyxus raised one hand.
"If someone dies, does that count as yielding?"
"Yes."
"Excellent."
Yamiya looked at him.
"How is that excellent?"
"Clear rules."
Aoikishi ignored them.
Kaosu looked across the courtyard.
"What's your name?"
"Raiyo Zarake."
Kaosu smiled.
"I like knowing the names of my victims."
Raiyo's expression didn't change.
"If I'd swung at you, you'd be in two pieces before you finished talking."
Kaosu's smile widened.
"Big talk for a guy carrying four toothpicks."
Raiyo glanced at the red threads forming around Kaosu's wrists.
"And you fight with what?"
He looked him over.
"A tantrum?"
Yamiya wrote something.
Kaosu pointed at her.
"Don't."
"I haven't said anything."
"You wrote it."
Nyxus leaned toward the notebook.
"Raiyo, one."
Kaosu's aura flared.
Aoikishi stepped backward.
"Begin."
Kaosu disappeared.
His fist reached Raiyo before the sound of his first step.
Raiyo drew.
Only an inch.
"Microcut."
Kaosu's punch missed by less than a finger-width.
He spun immediately.
"What the—"
Raiyo was still standing in the same place.
Yamiya leaned forward.
"He didn't dodge."
Aoikishi watched the space beside Raiyo's face.
"He cut the final distance between the punch and its destination."
Kaosu turned.
"You cut an inch?"
Raiyo slid the sword back down.
"You only missed by an inch."
Kaosu rushed him again.
This time, no straight punch.
A low kick.
Raiyo cut the distance beneath his own heel and dropped just enough to let it pass.
Kaosu turned the kick into a knee.
Raiyo shifted.
Kaosu followed with an elbow.
The sword flashed.
Kaosu's arm stopped.
His shoulder moved.
His fist didn't.
He stared at his hand.
"What did you do?"
Raiyo looked almost bored.
"Disconnected the instruction from the result."
Kaosu tried again.
Nothing.
Yamiya's eyes narrowed.
"Neurological?"
"The nerves are still there," Aoikishi replied. "He severed the relationship carrying the motor command."
Nyxus nodded.
"He put Kaosu on airplane mode."
Raiyo glanced toward him.
"That is unfortunately accurate."
Kaosu's left fist launched.
Raiyo cut again.
The leg supporting Kaosu went numb.
Kaosu caught himself with one knee almost touching the ground.
Raiyo rested the flat of his blade against his shoulder.
"Yield."
Kaosu stared at him.
Right arm useless.
One leg nearly dead.
Every normal approach answered before it began.
Raiyo had removed his options one by one.
Kaosu laughed.
Raiyo's eyes narrowed.
"That wasn't the expected response."
"You wanted me out of options."
Red threads crawled away from Kaosu's body.
"Fine."
The courtyard lights flickered.
"I'll use something that doesn't need me."
A red figure appeared behind Raiyo.
Raiyo turned.
His sword cut straight through its chest.
Nothing happened.
The blade passed through.
Raiyo's expression changed.
The figure punched him in the shoulder.
He slid three steps.
A second red figure formed beside Kaosu.
Then a third.
Not bodies.
Not ordinary clones.
They looked like Kaosu drawn in red heat.
Yamiya's stylus moved quickly.
"They have no stable physical structure."
Aoikishi watched the first one approach Raiyo.
"They're consequences."
Kaosu grinned from the center.
"Call them whatever you want."
One figure appeared at Raiyo's left.
Another behind him.
"They hit just fine."
Raiyo swung.
The first blade passed through.
Second cut.
Nothing.
Microcut.
Nothing.
He severed distance.
The manifestation appeared on the other side anyway.
Raiyo finally took a clean hit to the ribs.
Then another from behind.
Kaosu laughed.
"Having trouble?"
Raiyo wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Enjoy it."
One manifestation rushed him.
Raiyo drew his second sword.
The instant it cleared the sheath, the courtyard gained weight.
Not gravity.
Presence.
The cracks beneath Raiyo's boots widened.
Kaosu stopped smiling for half a second.
Raiyo drew the third.
The air tightened.
Nyxus slowly lowered his sandwich.
Yamiya looked from the blades to Raiyo.
"He's stacking something."
Aoikishi did not answer.
Raiyo drew the fourth.
The sound of steel leaving the sheath seemed to pull the entire courtyard quiet.
Four identical swords.
Four blades.
But each one made the space around him feel heavier than the last.
Raiyo crossed two in front.
The manifestations moved.
He cut.
Again—
nothing.
The red bodies let the blades pass through.
Raiyo stepped back.
Kaosu's grin returned.
"All that dramatic shit for nothing?"
Raiyo looked at the four ordinary swords.
Then at Kaosu.
"Looks like you're standing on the wrong side of the field."
Kaosu looked around.
"I'm winning."
"Exactly."
Raiyo reversed one blade.
Its edge touched the flat of another.
"Armament Manifestation."
Aoikishi's head turned.
Raiyo's voice dropped.
"Kagemitsu's Lament."
The ordinary sword changed.
Aoikishi forgot to breathe.
Not because he knew the blade.
Because some part of him remembered something around it.
White ground.
Blood.
Two men who had fought until winning and surviving became different questions.
One name surfaced.
Kagemitsu.
Then another.
Kagami.
Zarake.
The memory vanished before Aoikishi could reach it.
Too old.
So old even relevance had abandoned it.
Kagemitsu's Lament finished manifesting.
For the first time, the red consequences recoiled from a weapon.
Raiyo adjusted his grip.
He was about to swing.
Nyxus's sandwich caught fire.
Nyxus looked down.
Silence.
"No."
Kaosu kept his eyes on Raiyo.
"We're fighting."
Nyxus stood.
"I was eating."
"Eat something else."
Nyxus stared at him.
"There are things you can say in anger that cannot be taken back."
Raiyo still had Kagemitsu's Lament raised.
One manifestation waited behind him.
Aoikishi's hand had already moved toward his rod.
Nyxus walked directly into the courtyard.
Kaosu finally looked at him.
"Move."
"No."
"You're about to get hit."
"That sandwich had mustard."
Kaosu's face went blank.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"It was the good mustard."
Yamiya covered her mouth.
Nyxus picked up the burning sandwich.
He examined it one final time.
Then placed it directly on Kaosu's head.
Silence.
Mustard ran down Kaosu's temple.
Raiyo slowly lowered Kagemitsu's Lament.
Yamiya made one terrible choking noise.
Kaosu did not move.
"Nyxus."
"Yes?"
"Did you just put a burning sandwich on my fucking head?"
"You burned it."
"WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT."
Nyxus pointed at the sandwich.
"So was lunch."
Kaosu grabbed it.
Aoikishi opened a portal beneath him.
Kaosu vanished.
"AOIKISHI!"
The portal closed.
Nyxus looked down.
"Match over."
Raiyo stared at him.
"You do that often?"
Yamiya finally lost the fight against her laughter.
"More than you'd think."
Aoikishi still wasn't laughing.
His eyes were on Kagemitsu's Lament.
Raiyo noticed.
Slowly, the legendary weapon folded back into the shape of an ordinary sword.
Aoikishi spoke carefully.
"That weapon."
Raiyo's hand stopped.
"What about it?"
"How long have you had it?"
"Long enough."
"That isn't what I asked."
Raiyo smiled faintly.
"You'll live."
Aoikishi stared.
Then, unexpectedly—
laughed.
"All right."
Raiyo sheathed the blade.
Aoikishi stepped closer.
"You're joining ACT."
"That wasn't a question."
"No."
"I don't work under people weaker than me."
Nyxus sat back on the steps.
"Oh, this part."
Raiyo drew one ordinary sword.
"No offense."
Aoikishi sighed.
"It's always comforting when someone says that immediately before doing something stupid."
"One exchange."
Raiyo held the sword forward.
"If I win, I leave."
"You can leave now."
"If you win, I join."
Aoikishi looked at him.
Then at the four identical swords.
Then at the ordinary sheath that had briefly contained something ancient.
"Fine."
Raiyo moved.
He cut the distance between them.
One moment he stood across the courtyard.
The next, his sword was almost at Aoikishi's throat.
Aoikishi did not dodge.
He did not block.
He lifted two fingers.
Raiyo stopped.
Completely.
His coat froze behind him.
Hair stopped in the middle of movement.
The sword remained suspended.
Even the tiny vibration in the steel ceased.
Raiyo's eyes could still move.
Nothing else could.
Yamiya's notebook lowered.
"What did you cut?"
Aoikishi looked at Raiyo.
"Inertia."
Raiyo's eyes sharpened.
Aoikishi stepped around the frozen swordsman.
"Motion is easy."
He tapped the flat of Raiyo's blade.
"Continuing it is the expensive part."
Raiyo remained suspended.
Aoikishi leaned slightly closer.
"You cut relationships."
A small smile appeared.
"I've had longer to decide which ones matter."
Aoikishi snapped his fingers.
Inertia returned.
Raiyo stumbled one step forward and caught himself.
For the first time since walking out of Zone 404, he had absolutely nothing sarcastic to say.
Aoikishi smiled.
"That expression alone was worth recruiting you."
Raiyo slowly sheathed the sword.
"…Fine."
Aoikishi raised an eyebrow.
"Fine what?"
"I'll join."
A blue portal opened above them.
Kaosu fell out.
He hit the courtyard hard.
The burnt sandwich was still in his hand.
He looked up.
Raiyo was standing beside Aoikishi.
"No."
Raiyo picked up his coffee.
"Yes."
"You stole my chair."
"You left it unattended."
"I WAS GONE FOR FIVE MINUTES."
Raiyo started toward Headquarters.
"Sounds irresponsible."
Kaosu got up.
"Get back here."
Raiyo glanced over his shoulder.
"Looks like you're standing on the wrong side of the field."
Kaosu ran after him.
Nyxus watched both disappear inside.
Yamiya closed her notebook.
"What did you write?" Nyxus asked.
She turned the page toward him.
Raiyo Zarake — ACT
Under it:
Kaosu still does not have his chair.
Nyxus nodded.
"Important history."
