Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: The Price of Victory

Makarov Dreyar slowly lowered his massive, glowing fist, leaving Master Jose Porla completely unconscious, broken, and embedded into the fractured stone of the walking fortress. The suffocating, oppressive dark magic that had blanketed Magnolia for hours finally dissipated into nothingness, leaving behind only the crisp, cool air of the coast and the smell of ozone, sea salt, and burnt iron.

The Fairy Tail Master didn't spare another glance at his defeated rival. He turned his back on Jose and walked slowly to the jagged edge of the platform, standing directly beside where Kai lay flat on his back, staring up at the clear blue sky that had just broken through the storm clouds.

Makarov took a deep breath, his voice swelling with the immense power of his Magic, amplified so it echoed across the entirety of the ruined harbor, the shattered decks, and the surrounding shoreline.

"PHANTOM LORD!" Makarov's voice boomed like rolling thunder, shaking the very foundation of the ruined fortress. "Your Master has fallen! Your war is over! Surrender your arms immediately, or face absolute destruction!"

His voice carried an unquestionable authority that shattered whatever remaining resolve the surviving Phantom Lord mages possessed. Weapons were dropped, dark spell circles dissolved, and a collective silence fell over the docks.

Makarov let out a heavy sigh, his grand demeanor softening back into that of a worried grandfather. He looked down toward the lower decks and shouted to his guild members. "Fairy Tail! Secure the area! Search the wreckage and the harbor—get anyone who is injured or might have fallen into the sea!"

Down on the main deck and along the rain-slicked shore, the frontline fighters who had survived the kinetic shockwave of Kai's Dark Singularity were already securing the battlefield.

Erza Scarlet stood in her damaged Heaven's Wheel Armor, her posture rigid and unforgiving. Trapped beneath her was Aria of the Elements, completely pinned to the ground by a geometric rain of dozens of summoned magical swords. The blades held his clothes and limbs tightly to the deck, his eyes rolled back, entirely out of commission.

A few yards away, Elfman let out a low grunt as his massive Beast Soul transformation dissolved back into his human form. He stood panting, his knuckles bruised, looking down at the unconscious, folded body of Sol embedded in the rubble.

"You did it, Elfman," Mirajane said softly, stepping through the dust to support her brother. Her hand rested gently on his trembling shoulder, a warm, proud smile on her face. "You believed in yourself again."

Elfman wiped a mixture of sweat and blood from his forehead, looking at his hands before offering his sister a nod. "Yeah... a real man protects his family."

Further up the shoreline, Gray Fullbuster stood in nothing but his dark navy underwear—his coat and trousers having been completely incinerated during his clash with Totomaru. He casually wiped his nose with the back of his hand, standing right beside the knocked-out Element 4 fire mage whose flame-sword had been turned to dust.

"Tch. Fire mages are always so noisy," Gray muttered, ignoring the fact that he was practically naked in front of half the town.

Meanwhile, laying flat on his back in a shallow crater of scorched earth, Natsu Dragneel was breathing heavily, his chest heaving up and down. Blood dripped from his brow, his vest was shredded, and his muscles burned with absolute exhaustion.

Just a few feet away lay Gajeel Redfox, in the exact same battered state, staring blankly at the sky as his breath hit the cool air in ragged puffs.

Natsu suddenly let out a hoarse, barking laugh. He forced himself upright, wincing as his ribs protested, and wiped his face. He looked around at the ruined fortress, at his victorious guildmates, and then turned his head to glare at the Iron Dragon Slayer.

"Heh... you sure are tough," Natsu said, a wild grin returning to his face. "Being awake despite all of that."

Gajeel didn't respond immediately. He lay there in pure shock and agonizing physical pain, his mind struggling to process how his entire guild—a powerhouse of Fiore—had been dismantled in a single afternoon.

Natsu leaned forward, his curiosity instantly overriding his fatigue. "Hey. Where'd you learn your Dragon Slayer magic anyway?"

Silence. Gajeel didn't even turn his head.

Natsu's brow furrowed, his short temper flaring up. "HEY! I'm talking to you! Speak up! It's the first time I've ever met someone else who uses Dragon Magic outside of myself!"

Gajeel's eyes flickered. He closed them for a brief moment, letting out a sharp, irritated exhale through his nose before turning his gaze away.

"Metallicana..." Gajeel muttered reluctantly, his voice rough as gravel. "...The Iron Dragon."

Natsu froze. His eyes went wide as saucers, his jaw dropping open. "YOU LEARNED YOUR MAGIC FROM A REAL DRAGON AS WELL?!"

Gajeel snapped his head toward him, genuinely surprised. "You too...?"

Natsu nodded frantically, abandoning his hostile posture completely. "Yeah! Igneel, the Fire Dragon! But... wait, what happened to Metallicana? Where is he?"

Gajeel's expression darkened slightly. He hesitated, looking at his iron-bound gloves before speaking softly. "I don't know. One day... he was just there. And the next, he was gone."

Natsu's heart skipped a beat. "Wait... what day?! Was it July 7th, Year 777?!"

Gajeel stared at him, utterly stunned. The color drained slightly from his face. "How... how the hell do you know that date?"

"BECAUSE IGNEEL VANISHED ON THAT EXACT SAME DAY TOO!" Natsu screamed, grabbing his head in complete bewilderment.

The two Dragon Slayers sat there in the mud, staring at each other in absolute, wide-eyed shock. Two legendary dragons—beasts of ancient power—disappearing off the face of the earth on the exact same date without leaving a single trace.

"WHAT IS WITH ALL THESE SEVENS?!" Natsu shouted at the sky, violently shaking his fists.

"HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW?!" Gajeel roared back, pushing himself off the ground with a painful groan. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the grass and began staggering away toward the treeline.

"Hey! Where are you going?!" Natsu called out, taking a step after him. "If you ever find out anything about Metallicana or where the dragons went, you better tell me!"

Gajeel stopped, turning his head to glare at Natsu with pure venom. "Why the hell would I ever help you?! Don't act all buddy-buddy with me, Fairy Tail scum!"

Natsu crossed his arms, huffing. "I was just thinking about making up with you since the war is over, idiot!"

"Like hell!" Gajeel snarled, raising a trembling finger and pointing straight up toward the top of the ruined platform where Kai was currently lying down. "That bastard over there completely destroyed our home! He ripped our guildhall apart!"

"YOU DESTROYED OUR GUILD FIRST, YOU IRON-HEADED DUMMY!" Natsu yelled back, charging forward until their foreheads slammed together in a heated, nose-to-nose glare. "Besides, Kai would have ripped your damn limbs off and turned you into scrap metal if he wasn't busy fighting your Master!"

"LET HIM TRY!" Gajeel snapped back, shoving Natsu away. "I'll beat that damn Architect and you both next time! Mark my words!"

Without waiting for a reply, Gajeel limped into the lingering smoke and shadow of the forest, joining the scattered retreat of the remaining Phantom Lord mages who were scrambling to escape before the Magic Council arrived.

Meanwhile, lower down by the harbor docks, the rest of the Fairy Tail wizards were busy pulling injured members from both guilds out of the rubble. A few brave souls were diving into the dark harbor waters to drag out drowning mages—including a thoroughly soaked, hyperventilating Juvia Lockser, who was pulled onto a wooden pier by Macao and Wakaba.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed near the edge of the shoreline.

Makarov had jumped down from the ruined platform, his arm temporarily enlarged as he gently carried Kai's battered, limp body down to solid ground.

"Master!" Mirajane, Cana, and Lucy shouted in unison, rushing forward as fast as their legs could carry them.

Makarov slowly laid Kai down on a flat patch of grass. The young researcher looked terrible—his shredded coat was soaked in sweat and blood, his face was deathly pale, his right arm hung unnaturally limp, and his breathing was a shallow, wet rattle.

"Oh my god..." Lucy gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror as tears instantly welled in her eyes.

Mirajane dropped to her knees beside him, her hands hovering over his chest, terrified to touch him for fear of worsening his injuries.

Makarov immediately shrank his hand back to its normal size and gave the girls a reassuring, albeit exhausted, look. "Don't panic. He hasn't passed on—he has simply fallen unconscious from absolute physical and magical exhaustion. His body finally shut down when the fight ended."

A few yards away, hidden behind the jagged remains of a wooden shipping crate, Juvia stood shivering in her soaked blue coat. Her hands were clutched tightly over her chest as she peeked out, her blue eyes wide as she stared at Kai's motionless form.

"Kai-sama..." she whispered, her voice trembling.

Her mind flashed back to just moments ago—to being trapped in Gray's ice, watching Kai drop from the sky like a fallen star, breaking his own body to dismantle Jose's dark portal, and saving her from being crushed by the dark magic. She remembered his calm, almost arrogant voice floating down to her in the rain: Rain happens to be my favorite weather...

Her heart throbbed with an overwhelming, chaotic mix of guilt, awe, and something far deeper. She took a hesitant step forward out of the shadows, wanting desperately to run to his side, to check his pulse, to offer her water magic to cool his feverish skin. But as she saw the Fairy Tail members surrounding him with so much warmth and care, she froze.

I am the enemy, she thought bitterly, biting her lower lip as tears mixed with the rainwater on her cheeks. I don't belong there... not yet.

She slowly retreated back into the shadows, keeping her eyes fixed on Kai until the group carried him away.

By early evening, the battle was officially over.

The members of Fairy Tail had marched back into Magnolia, carrying their wounded and leaning on one another. They gathered in the open plaza directly in front of what used to be their home.

The Fairy Tail guildhall was a total disaster zone. The roof was completely caved in, giant iron pillars from Phantom's attack were impaled through the timber, and half the structure had been reduced to splintered wood and stone dust.

Despite the destruction, a festive atmosphere had already begun to bloom among the rowdier members. Natsu, Gray (who had finally put on pants), and Elfman were already laughing and cheering, sharing drinks from surviving wooden kegs.

Lucy Heartfilia stood a few paces back, isolated from the celebration. She stared at the pile of splintered oak that used to be the front entrance, her heart heavy as iron.

"Hey, Lucy!" Happy the exceed flew up beside her, tilting his head in confusion. "Why are you just standing here all by yourself? Come on, let's go join the party!"

Lucy bit her lip, looking down at her boots. She forced a tiny, breathless nod. "Yeah... okay."

She took a slow step forward into the clearing, right toward where Master Makarov was standing on a wooden barrel.

"Master..." Lucy called out, her voice cracking slightly.

The surrounding laughter slowly died down. The guild members turned their heads, curiosity and concern painting their faces as they looked at the rookie celestial wizard.

Lucy squeezed her eyes shut, bowing her head deeply as tears began to spill over her cheeks. "I... I'm so sorry! It's all my fault! It's my fault the guild hall was destroyed! It's my fault everyone got hurt... because my father hired Phantom to bring me back! If I had never come here—"

"That's not true at all, Lu-chan!" a gentle voice interrupted.

Lucy snapped her head up. Walking out from around the side of the destroyed building were Levy McGarden, Jet, and Droy. Levy's head was bandaged, and Jet and Droy were leaning on crutches, but all three of them were wearing bright, warm smiles.

"Nobody blames you for a single thing, Lucy," Levy said softly, stepping forward to take Lucy's hands.

"Yeah!" Jet added, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "If anything, it's our fault for being so weak and getting caught off guard in the first place!"

"We should have been stronger to protect the guild!" Droy agreed loudly.

Before Lucy could process their words, the sound of slow, heavy footsteps drew everyone's attention toward the main street.

Mirajane and Cana were walking side-by-side, carefully supporting a barely conscious, heavily bandaged Kai between them. Kai's right arm was wrapped tightly against his chest in a sling, his bad leg was bound in splints, and a thick layer of medical gauze was wrapped around his forehead and torso.

Lucy froze. Looking at Kai's battered state, her mind flashed back to everything he had done—protecting her and Happy from Erigor during the Lullaby incident, standing up to the Magic Council, and now nearly dying to shatter Jose Porla's ultimate spell just to keep them all safe.

"Kai..." Lucy sobbed, fresh tears streaming down her face as she took a step toward him. "I'm so, so sorry! You got hurt so horribly... all because of me again!"

Kai slowly lifted his head. His golden eyes were dim, heavy with severe exhaustion, but as he looked at Lucy, he let out a tired, raspy sigh.

"Blondie..." Kai mumbled, his hoarse voice cutting through her crying. "Stop thinking so damn highly of yourself."

Lucy blinked, stunned. "W-What?"

Kai winced slightly as Cana adjusted her grip on his waist, but he kept his gaze on Lucy. "You think I jumped into the sky and fought a Wizard Saint for you? Don't flatter yourself. I didn't do it as some heroic sacrifice. I did it because those bastards wrecked my workshop, ruined my sleep, and because... I knew I could win."

He huffed, a faint, exhausted smirk touching his pale lips. "I do what I want, when I want, because I want to. Don't go taking credit for my personal choices."

Mirajane let out a soft chuckle beside him, her blue eyes sparkling. "My goodness, Kai... that almost sounded like a rap."

Kai turned his head very slowly to glare blankly at Mirajane. "...Now that you mention it... it kind of does."

A sudden wave of laughter erupted across the plaza. Even Lucy couldn't help but cover her mouth, a tearful, wet laugh escaping her lips.

Master Makarov smiled warmly from his wooden barrel, stepping forward and looking at Lucy with boundless paternal affection.

"Sheathe your tears, child," Makarov said softly, his voice carrying over the crowd. "You have been through more than enough today. Look around you, Lucy. A guild is not just a building. A guild is a family. We may not share every single bit of each other's joy or pain... but we share what matters. One person's pain becomes everyone's pain. One person's tears become everyone's tears. And one person's happiness becomes everyone's happiness. That is what it means to belong to Fairy Tail."

Lucy stared at the old Master, then looked around at the faces of Natsu, Gray, Erza, Levy, Mirajane, and everyone else. They were all looking back at her with unyielding warmth, acceptance, and big, foolish grins.

The wall of guilt surrounding her heart completely shattered, and Lucy broke down into heavy, happy tears, wiping her eyes as she smiled back at them.

Makarov turned his gaze back to the ruined guildhall, crossing his arms with a thoughtful hum. "Well... perhaps things got a bit out of hand this time around! But truth be told, the building was in desperate need of a renovation anyway! We can all rebuild it together—bigger, better, and grander than ever before!"

"YEAHHHHH!" the entire guild roared in unison, pumping their fists into the air.

From beside Mirajane and Cana, Kai spoke up in a flat, deadpan voice. "Yeah... you guys go ahead and do that. I am absolutely not doing manual labor. I still have a luxury mansion standing on the upper hill, and I am going to sleep in my very comfy, massive bed."

The entire crowd immediately stopped cheering, turning to stare at Kai with unanimous, burning jealousy. They had completely forgotten that while their home was in ruins, Kai was currently the only member in the guild who owned an actual, multi-story estate in Magnolia.

Natsu's eye twitched.

Gray's mouth fell open.

Elfman slowly lowered his fist.

Cana grinned.

Mirajane covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

Erza stared at Kai with the expression of someone witnessing a fundamental betrayal of architectural principles.

Finally, someone shouted:

"WHAT KIND OF ARCHITECT ARE YOU?!"

Kai's golden eyes slid toward the crowd.

A tiny smirk appeared.

"The smart kind."

Silence.

Then—

"YOU'RE AN ARCHITECT!"

"YES!"

"THEN WHY AREN'T YOU REBUILDING THE GUILDHALL?!"

"Because I'm an Architect, not a construction worker."

He hummed contentedly, completely unbothered by their glares, though his eyes were visibly fluttering closed. "Besides... I believe I have an urgent appointment with a very, very irritated female doctor in the East Forest."

He slowly shifted his weight, looking between the members surrounding him. "So... which one of you beauties wants to have the honor of taking me out?"

An awkward, heavy silence fell over the plaza.

Loke scratched his cheek, looking at Kai with a bizarre expression. "Dude... why did you have to phrase it like that? You made it sound so weird."

Mirajane, however, simply giggled, her sweet smile returning in full force as she tightened her grip on his arm. "I'll take you out then, Kai."

Kai tilted his head toward her, a weak, teasing smirk appearing on his face. "So forward, Clouds."

Mirajane chuckled, undeterred by the nickname.

Before they could take a step, Cana forcefully pushed herself closer, slinging Kai's left arm firmly over her shoulder. "Whoa, hold on a second! No need, Mira. I'll take him. After all, we're a team."

The entire plaza froze.

Natsu's jaw dropped. Gray blinked in utter disbelief. Erza's eyes widened to the size of saucers.

"WHAT?!!" Natsu shrieked, pointing an accusatory finger. "KAI IS IN A TEAM?! WITH SOMEONE?! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?! WHEN?!"

Cana let out a proud laugh, tossing her brown hair back. "A few days ago! Right after the Kaldor ruins mission!"

Mirajane slowly turned her head toward Kai. Her sweet smile remained, but her aura suddenly darkened with a terrifying, icy pressure that made the surrounding grass wither.

"Kai..." Mirajane said, her voice dripping with dangerous sweetness. "You didn't tell me you were forming a team..."

Kai stared at her with a completely tired, deadpan expression. "...I don't recall ever giving her my consent."

Cana just shrugged casually, grinning. "When have i ever needed your consent! We've been a team forever, partner. Now come on, let me carry you."

Mirajane stared at Cana for a long moment, her dark aura vanishing as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a bright, cheerful beam. "Well! In that case, I'm taking a spot on this team as well!"

Kai slowly turned his head to look at Mirajane. "Mira... you can't even use Take-Over magic right now. What are you supposed to do while Cana and I are fighting? Stand there and look pretty?"

Mirajane beamed at him, resting a hand on her cheek. "So you think I'm pretty?"

Kai hummed, closing his eyes. "That is literally one of only three good things you have going for you."

Mirajane's smile twitched. She looked simultaneously offended and deeply confused. "I really want to ask what the other two things are... but I have a strong feeling I won't like the answer. So let's just go."

With Mirajane on his right and Cana on his left, the two girls began slowly helping the heavily bandaged researcher limp down the street.

Behind them, several male guild members were glaring at Kai's back with pure envy, muttering under their breath. "Lucky bastard..." "How does he pull this off while half-dead?!"

Erza Scarlet stood frozen in the middle of the street, her brain visibly struggling to process the scene unfolding in front of her. She looked at Kai, then at Mira, then at Cana. A sudden, strange panic seized her chest.

"WAIT!" Erza called out sharply, rushing forward in her heavy armor.

The trio stopped and turned around. Mirajane tilted her head, looking at Erza with an amused, knowing glint in her eyes. "Yes, Erza?"

Erza suddenly froze, realizing everyone was looking at her. Her cheeks flushed a bright, violent shade of crimson, and she cleared her throat awkwardly, standing up straight.

"I... I will accompany you as well!" Erza declared loudly, her voice stiff as a board.

Mirajane's smile widened. "Oh? And why is that, Erza?"

Erza looked wildly around the street, her mind racing before she blurted out, "...For safety reasons! Yes! In case... in case an enemy group attacks you on the road!"

Cana snorted, trying to hold back a laugh, while Mirajane simply nodded warmly. "Of course. Safety first."

As the group turned around to finally make their way toward Porlyusica's treehouse in the East Forest, Kai suddenly stopped. He turned his head back toward the rest of Fairy Tail, who were all still standing in the ruined plaza watching them leave.

A sharp, downright villainous smirk spread across Kai's pale, blood-stained face.

"By the way..." Kai's hoarse voice carried clearly back to the crowd. "...you all just committed an unsanctioned inter-guild war, completely destroyed millions of jewels worth of public property across two major towns, endangered hundreds of civilians, and did all of it in broad daylight."

He let out a dry, malicious chuckle. "I'm about ninety-nine percent sure the Magic Council's enforcement dogs are already on their way here with arrest warrants. Have fun with that."

Without waiting for a response, Kai turned back around and casually strolled off toward the forest, flanked by Mirajane, Cana, and Erza.

In the plaza, time seemed to stop.

The color instantly drained from every single Fairy Tail member's face. Natsu's jaw hit the floor, Gray's eyes went wide with pure terror, and the energetic atmosphere completely died.

"THE COUNCILOOOOORS!" Master Makarov shrieked, comic tears erupting from his eyes like twin waterfalls as he grabbed his head in sheer agony. "THEY'RE GOING TO EAT US ALIVE! WE'RE ALL GOING TO PRISON! I'M TOO OLD FOR A PENITENTIARY!"

While the entire guild erupted into absolute, chaotic panic behind them, Kai simply closed his eyes, letting his entourage guide him into the peaceful shade of the trees, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips.
