Chapter 524 - Chapter 402

The first north-eastern scouting groups left the basin while the coalition was still clearing the last trenches around the severed reinforcement artery. The rift itself was gone, but damaged formation channels continued leaking small amounts of pressure into the surrounding ground, forcing Veridian Prime cultivators to mark safe routes before the heavier supply formations could begin moving. Haotian remained near the exposed eastern conduit until Xuanyin had copied the residual direction onto the campaign maps, then joined her at the northern edge of the basin as the first Umbrel pairs disappeared into the broken hills. Above them, Celestara cultivators were already spreading into wider reconnaissance arcs so the ground scouts would not have to enter every valley blindly.

The residual spatial relationship was too weak to carry anything useful now that the eastern relay had been severed, yet it retained a consistent north-eastern orientation whenever Haotian examined it through the Dao Palace of the Universe. He could not tell how far it extended, because sections of the old relationship had collapsed along with the anchor system, but the direction was clear enough for the scouts to follow without marching directly toward whatever might be waiting at the other end. Xuanyin made certain the scouts understood that distinction before they departed, telling them, "We know where the line goes. We do not know what is sitting on it, so nobody treats the first formation they find as the answer." One of the Umbrel cultivators acknowledged with a slight nod before moving after his partner into the ridge shadows.

Tianlan remained near the mobile reserve while the main army reorganized behind them. The two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons had rested after the previous battle and were already back in the air, although he kept them at different distances so they were not repeatedly observing the same terrain. The third remained with the recovery formations well behind the front, and Tianlan had stopped checking on it every hour once the handlers assured him that its condition had not worsened. Haotian noticed the restraint but said nothing, because Tianlan was finally learning that concern did not require constant interference.

The first report arrived less than an hour later. An Umbrel scout returned through the same broken valley the coalition had used to approach the basin, his concealment fading only after he entered the protection of the forward formation. He waited until Xuanyin finished receiving a Celestara report before saying, "The line separates ahead. We found three branches, and all three have active formation pressure." The Blue Sphere elder beside Xuanyin immediately moved three blank markers onto the campaign map while the scout described what he had seen.

The northern branch climbed through densely wooded high ground and passed beneath an old stone embankment that the Abyss had repaired recently. Several exposed formation plates were clean enough that someone had either replaced or maintained them within the last few weeks, and the surrounding roots had been cut back where they threatened the buried conduits. The second branch continued north-east until it reached a broad river, where the visible formation structures were damaged and partly submerged beneath the bank. The third branch turned east along a ridge carrying recent tracks, repaired stonework, and enough demonic movement that the scouts had been forced to withdraw before identifying its full extent.

Xuanyin studied the three descriptions without immediately assigning priority. "North looks maintained, east looks used, and the river looks damaged," she said, keeping one hand on the map while the Blue Sphere elder marked each report. Haotian extended his awareness toward the residual relationship but found that the weakened line divided before reaching any of the three structures, leaving enough distortion between them that none could be dismissed from the basin alone. When Xuanyin asked whether one felt more important, he told her that all three connected to the same broader direction and that he would rather examine them closer than force an answer out of incomplete spatial residue.

The main army did not march as one body toward the fork. Xuanyin advanced only the forward legions and kept the support formations far enough back that an ambush at one branch would not catch the entire coalition in terrain they had not surveyed. Three investigation groups were assembled with enough Blue Sphere formation specialists, Veridian terrain readers, Marephoros cultivators, Umbrel scouts, and high-level combat strength to survive independently for a limited period. Haotian remained between the branches with Xuanyin, while Tianlan and the mobile reserve stayed loose enough to reinforce whichever group first encountered a serious problem.

The forest thickened as they left the broken uplands. Trees grew close enough together in some valleys that Celestara cultivators could not maintain a useful view of the ground beneath them, and long stretches of old road had disappeared beneath roots and damp soil. The rain from the previous night still clung to leaves overhead, falling in irregular drops whenever movement disturbed the branches, while shallow streams cut across the old roads and made several approaches slick enough that Marephoros fighters naturally moved toward the front. The air carried less obvious rift corruption than the basin behind them, though Haotian could still feel the network beneath the terrain whenever the surviving conduits passed close to the surface.

The northern group reached its first structure before the others. What had looked like one relay from the scout report proved to be a sequence of buried control points beneath an old embankment, each connected by stone channels reinforced with dark formation metal. Veridian Prime found that the tree roots nearest the structure had been deliberately severed at almost identical distances from the conduit, and one cultivator crouched beside a fresh cut before telling the Blue Sphere elder, "These were cleared recently. Someone wanted the roots away from the housing." The elder ran his fingers across the nearest formation plate and answered that the metal had been replaced even more recently than the scouts suspected.

Umbrel moved past them into the higher trees. Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette reduced the leading pair's presence against the damp forest and broken stone, while Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing allowed them to cross the few exposed sections without announcing the direction of their movement. They discovered demonic observers on the far ridge but no large garrison around the structure itself, which made the northern relay appear more credible rather than less. When the report reached Xuanyin, she marked the maintenance activity and asked the group to leave the formation intact until they had compared it with the other two branches.

The river group found exactly the opposite problem. The visible conduit entered the bank through a formation housing that had cracked along one side, and the stone around it had subsided enough that several control plates were tilted nearly vertical. Farther upstream, another section had disappeared completely beneath the river after part of the bank collapsed, leaving only dark metal visible through the current whenever the water thinned over it. A Blue Sphere specialist looked at the damage and said he would have assumed the branch was failing if the hidden relay had not already proved that the Abyss knew how to make damaged infrastructure look harmless.

Marephoros cultivators entered the shallows to examine the current before anyone tried to uncover the conduit physically. They used Flowing Current Step over the uneven riverbed, allowing the water to become part of their movement instead of something that had to be resisted, and one of them remained nearly motionless for several breaths while feeling how the current changed around the submerged formation. When he returned to shore, he told the others, "The water is being disturbed from underneath. It is not continuous, but something down there is opening and closing." Veridian Prime began tracing the bank at the same time and soon found that the deeper physical conduit was considerably less damaged than the exposed surface made it appear.

The eastern branch looked convincing in a more ordinary way. Recent tracks crossed the ridge road in multiple directions, and Celestara observers counted several patrols moving between defensive positions farther ahead. Umbrel scouts found maintenance crews carrying replacement components into one of the formation chambers, while Pyrelith cultivators examining an abandoned plate identified heat patterns consistent with recent repairs rather than old battle damage. The eastern commander reported that the route was unquestionably active, though he carefully added, "Active does not tell us what it is active for."

Xuanyin placed the three reports beside one another. The northern branch had maintenance without heavy traffic, the eastern branch had traffic and active repairs, and the river branch looked damaged while carrying a deeper conduit that did not behave like damaged infrastructure. None of those facts contradicted a real relay, and Haotian could still feel the residual network relationship touching all three when he examined them through Universe. Xuanyin eventually said, "We keep all three groups small until one of them gives us something the others cannot imitate," and Haotian agreed.

For almost another hour, the Abyss allowed them to investigate.

The northern formation specialists discovered several control points that accepted small amounts of burden from farther south, enough to make the branch appear capable of supporting a larger route. The eastern group found another repaired conduit and tracks indicating that heavy equipment had passed through during the previous day. At the river, Marephoros confirmed that pressure beneath the current rose and fell without any obvious relationship to the damaged surface housing. The inconsistencies were useful, but none yet separated deception from function.

The ambush began at all three branches within the same minute.

At the northern embankment, hidden stone coverings broke apart behind the coalition investigation group and exposed trenches that had been concealed beneath soil, roots, and cut brush. Demonic infantry surged from them in two disciplined lines, attacking the technical specialists from the rear while ranged cultivators on the ridge descended far enough to threaten the front. The northern Blue Sphere commander had no time to withdraw from the relay structure without moving directly into one of the attack lines, so he ordered the mixed teams to form around the specialists while keeping enough distance from the control plates to avoid damaging them during the fight.

The first demonic charge came through a narrow path between trees, which prevented the attackers from using their full numbers immediately. Marephoros fighters met the front and turned the heaviest strikes away from the formation's center, using small changes in stance and angle rather than trying to throw armored demons across the forest. Veridian roots entered the damp ground around the path and caught boots, weapon shafts, and the edges of armor wherever the demons tried to widen. The Blue Sphere cultivators used those disruptions to keep the specialists protected without collapsing the entire group into a rigid circle.

One demon deliberately allowed himself to be redirected toward the relay controls. The Marephoros cultivator handling the attack realized what he was doing before the collision completed and changed his own position rather than finishing the redirection. The demon's weapon missed the control housing by several feet, and a Blue Sphere spear struck him through the exposed side. The northern commander saw the intention and immediately warned the others that the enemy wanted them fighting on top of the formation rather than merely defending it.

At the river, the first barrage struck the water instead of the coalition. Dark formation techniques hit upstream and downstream at nearly the same time, turning the previously predictable current into overlapping surges that ruined the footing of the Marephoros cultivators still standing in the shallows. Several demonic ranged fighters opened from both banks immediately afterward, forcing Celestara cultivators to descend through the tree canopy before they had enough space to build a clean aerial formation. The river group had to protect the submerged conduit, the formation specialists, and the people already caught in the water at the same time.

One Marephoros fighter went under when the current shifted around his legs. Veridian Prime sent roots into the riverbank rather than trying to grow blindly through the water, creating a low lattice downstream where the man could catch himself once the current carried him into it. A Blue Sphere cultivator reached the edge and pulled him toward shallower water while Celestara intercepted the next ranged attack above them. The demon formations on the opposite bank adjusted and began aiming at the Veridian roots instead, demonstrating that they had already understood what had saved him.

The eastern branch came under the heaviest attack. The recent traffic had been real because the Abyss had moved a large formation into the ridge before the coalition arrived, and that force descended through two side valleys while another group emerged behind the repaired formation chamber. The eastern Blue Sphere commander saw the attempt to pull his group apart and ordered everyone to hold the station rather than pursue whichever enemy withdrew first. Pyrelith remained behind the front until one demonic formation compressed in a narrow cut, then struck only the center of that concentration while Marephoros prevented the impact from driving coalition fighters back across the unstable road.

The simultaneous attacks made every branch look important. Xuanyin watched the three command formations fill with casualty reports and pressure changes, but she did not immediately send Haotian or Tianlan toward whichever fight appeared worst. All three groups had been assembled to survive exactly this kind of uncertainty, and committing the reserve too early would tell the Abyss which branch the coalition had decided to value. Haotian remained beside her, following the larger spatial relationships rather than the individual battles while the pressure beneath the three routes began changing.

Xuanyin noticed the first irregularity while comparing the northern branch with the river. The northern formation took a direct strike when one demonic technique penetrated the outer Blue Sphere defense and hit the side of a control housing, causing its local pressure to drop sharply for several breaths. At almost the same time, the river conduit changed despite suffering no comparable damage, its buried relationship widening briefly before settling again. Xuanyin asked the river group whether anything local had triggered the fluctuation, and the answer came back that the water had changed but no one had touched the conduit.

She did not announce a conclusion. Instead, she asked the eastern group to report the next time their formation changed for any reason, no matter how small. Several minutes later, a defending demon struck one of the eastern control plates while trying to drive a Blue Sphere cultivator away from the station, and the local pressure shifted enough for the formation specialists to register it. The river branch changed again within the same interval, while the northern branch did nothing beyond its own local response.

Xuanyin leaned over the map and asked the Blue Sphere elder beside her to align the timing from all three branches. He began marking the changes while another specialist copied the river readings onto a separate plate, and Haotian extended the Dao Palace of the Universe toward the three relationships with a narrower question than before. Once he stopped asking which branch looked strongest and instead followed which one responded to changes elsewhere, the river conduit became much easier to distinguish. The northern and eastern branches reacted when disturbed; the river reacted when either of the others changed.

"We need another test," Xuanyin said, keeping her voice low even though the command formation was already loud with reports. She instructed the northern group to weaken one expendable outer control relationship without damaging the main conduit, and the commander there acknowledged after checking that his specialists could do it safely. The change was small enough that the demons probably mistook it for battle damage. The river pressure still shifted.

Xuanyin waited before looking at Haotian. "It is not carrying the largest burden, but it keeps correcting whenever another branch changes." Haotian followed the deeper relationship beneath the river and confirmed that the fluctuations were not random instability from damaged housing. The conduit was participating in network compensation, adjusting itself in response to pressure states that should have been invisible to a genuinely separate branch.

The eastern route was tested next. Blue Sphere specialists interrupted one outer formation line for less than a breath while the surrounding fighters kept the demons away from the controls. The river conduit narrowed immediately and then reopened after the eastern line returned to normal. Xuanyin finally said, "The other two wait until someone touches them. The river is watching the whole system."

Haotian looked toward the north-eastern river valley hidden beyond the trees. "That makes it the relay."

The Blue Sphere elder beside them studied the timing one more time before nodding. "Then north and east are decoys."

"Functional decoys," Xuanyin corrected. "Do not assume they are empty because they are false targets. Their formations are carrying enough real pressure to support the lie."

She sent the revised orders without asking either investigation group to abandon its battlefield. The northern and eastern forces were to stop trying to seize their relay structures, maintain enough pressure to keep the defenders committed, and avoid causing further formation damage unless necessary for survival. The river group received the opposite instruction: preserve the buried conduit, establish receiving arrays on both banks, and identify where the real relay transferred its burden. Umbrel scouts were redirected toward the upstream maintenance routes, while Veridian Prime began tracing the deepest physical line beneath the river.

The Abyss reacted before every unit finished repositioning. Pressure beneath the river increased sharply, and Celestara observers saw several demonic formation crews leaving concealed shelters upstream with portable control components. The real relay was beginning to transfer its burden farther north-east rather than wait for the coalition to isolate it. Xuanyin told the river commander not to try to stop the movement through brute force, because an abrupt blockage could simply rupture the submerged conduit and erase the relationship they wanted to follow.

Marephoros entered the water again under stronger Celestara cover. Ninefold Returning Tide received the first heavy surge through successive layers of control, spreading the movement along the river rather than allowing it to settle into one receiving formation on the bank. The technique could not remove the spatial pressure itself, but it gave the Blue Sphere specialists enough stability to measure where the burden was leaving. Veridian Prime followed the physical conduit through the bank and found that it turned north beneath a low ridge before continuing beyond the immediate river.

The formation crews moving upstream became the Umbrel objective. Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette allowed the first pair to remain difficult to isolate while they crossed through wet trees and broken stone, but the scouts relied more heavily on Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing whenever they had to cross open ground near the demonic route. They were not trying to kill every retreating fighter. They needed the crews, the control mechanisms they carried, and the points where those mechanisms interacted with the buried relay.

One demonic specialist stopped at a small chamber cut into the base of the ridge and began activating a control plate before the Umbrel pair reached him. The leading scout crossed the last distance through Silent Flow and struck the man's weapon arm instead of the plate, preventing the activation without damaging the mechanism. His partner entered from the opposite side and forced the second specialist away from the control ring, and Blue Sphere fighters following behind secured the chamber while the Umbrel pair continued after the remaining crew.

The river burden began accumulating as soon as the first control point fell. Marephoros felt the difference before the Blue Sphere receiving arrays registered the full increase, and the river commander warned Xuanyin that they could keep the local system stable only if the deeper transfer was stopped gradually rather than all at once. Xuanyin passed the warning to Haotian, who had begun following the spatial relationship north-east through Universe. He could feel the relay trying to hand its burden into another structure beyond the ridge, but the receiving point remained too far away to define cleanly.

Tianlan was sent toward the first major reinforcement movement converging on the river from the eastern ridge. One of the healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons had already altered its flight path above that region, and Tianlan opened a short sensory bond to confirm what the bird had seen. Several hundred demons were moving through a narrow valley with a powerful Immortal Lord near the front, while a second group farther north was trying to approach the river through higher ground. Tianlan released the Falcon's senses and divided the mobile reserve rather than taking both threats personally.

He positioned the larger reserve formation across the lower valley because the Immortal Lord there had enough strength to break through ordinary mixed teams if left unopposed. The smaller reserve was sent north with additional Celestara support, since the terrain there favored interception before the demons could descend toward the river. When the Blue Sphere commander beside him asked whether he wanted to reinforce the smaller group himself, Tianlan shook his head and said, "The stronger commander is here, so I stay here. If the northern group changes, the Falcon will see it before I can."

The demonic Immortal Lord reached him moments later. His long sword struck toward Tianlan's shoulder with enough force that blocking it rigidly would have driven the spear back into his own body, so Tianlan turned the shaft and let part of the attack pass along it before returning the point toward the man's chest. The demon adjusted quickly, stepping away from the thrust and trying to move around Tianlan rather than continue the exchange. That choice made his purpose obvious; he wanted the river route, not Tianlan.

Tianlan kept his body between the Immortal Lord and the valley exit while the reserve formation closed behind him. The sword came again, and Tianlan shortened his spear grip to keep the weapon effective at the reduced distance, using a brief Space adjustment only to settle his rear foot where the demon did not expect it. The spear butt struck the man's ribs as he stepped through, forcing him to turn and giving the Blue Sphere fighters enough time to close the valley behind Tianlan. Once another coalition Immortal Lord arrived, Tianlan left the duel rather than staying because the opponent was strong.

The northern reinforcement group changed direction while that fight continued. Tianlan noticed one Falcon descending slightly and opened the sensory bond only long enough to see the demons leave the obvious ridge path and enter a hidden forest track toward the river. He released the connection, redirected the smaller reserve twenty yards east, and warned them not to chase downhill if the demons withdrew. The ambush the Abyss had intended for the river instead met a coalition formation already waiting across the track.

At the river itself, the real relay became increasingly unstable as more upstream controls fell. Blue Sphere specialists had established enough receiving arrays to prevent the first local rupture, but the deeper relationship was still pulling burden toward the next network layer. Haotian moved closer and entered the edge of the river formation so he could distinguish the local relay from whatever was receiving it. The Dao Palace of the Universe clarified the geometry without requiring any synchronization with the other two cores.

Xuanyin joined him on the bank after transferring most of the three-branch command work to the sector officers. She watched the pressure change through the plates for several moments before saying, "If we cut the local conduit before the deeper side lets go, the burden goes forward." Haotian agreed and explained that he could separate the local spatial relationship, but they needed the physical conduit unloaded first so the remote network did not simply accept everything through another path. Xuanyin turned toward the Marephoros commander and asked how slowly he could reduce the river relay without making the deeper structure notice immediately.

The man looked at the current, then at the receiving arrays along both banks. "Slowly enough that it will look like damage for a little while, but not long. Once we start drawing, the pressure pattern changes." Xuanyin told him that a little while was all they needed and instructed the Blue Sphere specialists to match the reduction rather than trying to stabilize the relay at its original level. Veridian Prime remained beneath them, roots tracing the conduit so any physical shift would be detected before it became a collapse.

The first draw was almost invisible. Marephoros redirected a small portion of the local burden into the receiving arrays, and Blue Sphere allowed the relay's pressure to fall only slightly before holding it there. The deeper network responded by sending another small correction through the route, which Haotian followed through Universe. The relationship extended north-east, folded beneath terrain that did not correspond cleanly with surface distance, and touched something broader before the pressure returned.

Xuanyin noticed the return timing. She asked the formation specialists whether the correction came immediately after the local drop or whether there had been a delay, and one elder answered that the relay seemed to send something outward before receiving the stabilizing response. Xuanyin had them repeat the same draw several minutes later, this time through a different receiving plate so the local physical behavior would not be identical. The river relay changed, sent another faint pulse deeper, waited, and then adjusted again.

"It is checking itself," she said, though her attention remained on the readings rather than Haotian. "The relay compensates locally, reports the change, and waits for something deeper to tell it whether the new state is acceptable." Haotian followed the next outgoing pulse and found the same broader structure at the far edge of his perception. It did not simply receive burden; it was participating in the verification.

The discovery changed how Xuanyin used the northern and eastern decoys. She instructed both groups to produce small, controlled changes in their false branches without destroying anything, while the river team recorded how the real relay responded. The northern branch was weakened first, and the river adjusted before sending a verification pulse. Several minutes later the eastern branch changed, producing a different local response and a slightly different return interval from the deeper network.

The Blue Sphere elder beside Xuanyin began laying the patterns side by side. "It is not using the same verification for both branches," he said after the third test. "North returns slower. East gets a faster correction." Xuanyin asked whether the difference matched the physical distance between the branches, and the elder shook his head. Haotian examined the deeper relationships and found that the answer came from the same broad region despite the different timing.

Xuanyin looked at the map for several breaths before speaking. "Then whatever is deeper knows which branch changed. The relay is not just reporting pressure. It is reporting state." Haotian agreed, and the implications settled through the command group without anyone needing to turn them into a larger speech. The network was not a collection of passive conduits; some structures were monitoring others and checking their condition through a deeper hierarchy.

The Abyss began understanding that its relay was being interrogated. The next verification pulse came sooner than expected and carried more pressure, enough that the Blue Sphere elders immediately recognized it as a deliberate test rather than an ordinary correction. Xuanyin did not answer it with the same response they had used before. She instructed Marephoros to allow a slightly different local fluctuation and the northern branch to hold steady, creating a pattern that still resembled an unstable relay under battlefield pressure rather than a system being manipulated deliberately.

The deeper network accepted the first false state.

Another probe arrived.

Xuanyin changed the answer again.

Haotian followed every outgoing and returning relationship through Universe, gradually building a clearer picture of the structure beyond the river even though he still could not see its full physical arrangement. Three substantial routes appeared around the deeper node, each entering from a different direction and carrying different pressure behavior. One reacted frequently, another carried heavier burden at longer intervals, and the third remained comparatively quiet while still participating in the verification cycle.

The coalition did not attempt to map every minor line. Xuanyin focused on the three relationships the deeper structure treated as significant enough to verify repeatedly, while Haotian ignored weaker branches that might simply be local maintenance routes. The Blue Sphere elders copied direction, timing, and pressure changes into separate records so losing the river relay would not erase what they had already learned. The longer the network continued checking them, the more certain the larger structure became.

The northern and eastern battles had become less intense by then. Once the coalition stopped threatening the decoy structures directly, the demons defending them realized the purpose of their attacks had changed, but withdrawing would have revealed the deception too openly. They continued fighting enough to keep both groups occupied while trying to move stronger units toward the river through side routes. Tianlan's mobile reserve intercepted those movements repeatedly, using the Falcons only when the forest or ridge lines hid routes the ground formations could not see.

The demonic Immortal Lord from the lower valley attempted another push after breaking away from the coalition cultivator who had taken over the duel. Tianlan met him again near the edge of the reserve formation, but this time he used the spear to keep the demon inside the valley rather than trying to injure him quickly. The sword struck high, Tianlan redirected it along the shaft, and the demon immediately changed to a lower cut meant to force him back. Tianlan shifted one step through Space, kept the line closed, and told the Blue Sphere commander behind him, "Do not follow if he turns around. The river is what he wants."

The demon did turn.

The reserve did not chase.

Instead, Marephoros fighters farther down the valley changed the momentum of the retreating formation as it tried to accelerate toward another route, while Veridian Prime closed the narrow side path the demons had hoped to use. The demonic unit became trapped between its own attempted redirection and the coalition line, allowing Blue Sphere and Pyrelith to reduce it without pulling the reserve away from the river. Tianlan returned his attention north before the Immortal Lord was even dead.

At the real relay, the deeper network finally changed from verification to withdrawal. The pressure beneath the river surged hard enough to raise the water along the submerged conduit, and the remote relationship began pulling burden away faster than Marephoros could disguise the loss as ordinary battlefield damage. Xuanyin looked at the latest readings and told Haotian that the Abyss had either identified the deception or decided the relay was no longer worth trusting. Haotian agreed, because the spatial relationship was narrowing from the far side in a way no local fluctuation could explain.

They stopped trying to preserve the relay's normal behavior.

Blue Sphere receiving arrays opened wider, and Marephoros began drawing off the local burden before it could be transferred forward. Veridian Prime held the physical conduit and riverbank while the water changed around them, preventing the damaged surface housing from collapsing and burying the deeper structure prematurely. Umbrel scouts upstream secured the remaining maintenance chambers so no local crew could trigger another transfer sequence manually.

The remote network pulled harder.

Haotian followed the spatial relationship and found the local junction where the river relay connected to the deeper route. He did not use the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture, because the problem required neither three-core synchronization nor simultaneous use of Creation and Destruction. The Dao Palace of the Universe was enough to identify how the local space had been folded into the larger network and where that fold could be released without damaging the routes the coalition wanted to remember.

Xuanyin watched the local burden fall and asked when Pyrelith could be allowed to destroy the physical relay. Haotian told her to wait until the deeper relationship was separated, because breaking the housing first would still give the remote network a chance to accept the final release. The Pyrelith cultivators beside the river heard the instruction and remained ready without gathering enough power to stress the already damaged bank.

Haotian altered the local spatial relationship gradually. The river relay tried to maintain its connection by drawing harder through the far structure, but Universe allowed him to separate the local geometry without tearing the remote route apart in a way that would erase its direction. The conduit beneath the water dimmed as the spatial fold loosened, while Marephoros carried the remaining burden into the receiving arrays and Blue Sphere closed the local formation layers behind it. The deeper network eventually pulled against a relationship that no longer aligned cleanly enough to transfer pressure.

The river relay became locally isolated.

Veridian Prime confirmed that the physical conduit had emptied enough to survive destruction without throwing uncontrolled pressure into the bank. One of the Blue Sphere elders looked toward the Pyrelith pair and gave them the authorization they had been waiting for since the investigation began. Their first concentrated strike opened the hardened housing, the second broke the formation metal around the central conduit, and the final attack destroyed the relay core after every useful spatial relationship had already been recorded.

The river surged into the cavity left behind.

Marephoros redirected the sudden change in current away from the formation specialists while Veridian roots reinforced the bank until the soil settled. The damaged outer structures collapsed a little farther under their own weight, but the deeper conduit did not detonate or transfer anything into the remote network. Haotian remained at the edge of the water until Universe confirmed that the local relationship had ended completely.

The northern decoy responded first.

Its formation pressure fell without any local attack causing the change, and the demons defending it immediately began withdrawing from the embankment. The eastern branch followed several moments later, losing enough remote support that the repaired control structures dimmed across the ridge. Xuanyin ordered both investigation groups to dismantle the false branches in controlled sequence rather than allow the retreating defenders to destroy them first.

The northern group had already learned where the maintained conduits were buried. Blue Sphere specialists isolated each control point, Marephoros managed the small transfers between them, and Veridian Prime held the physical channels until Pyrelith could remove the hardened housings safely. Umbrel scouts moved ahead into the hidden trenches and maintenance cuts, preventing several demonic demolition crews from reaching the remaining controls. The decoy system died section by section without requiring Haotian to leave the river.

The eastern branch took longer because the demons had more troops there. Celestara maintained pressure over the ridge while Blue Sphere formations advanced through the road system rather than chasing retreating units into the forest. Marephoros repeatedly prevented the demons from using downhill charges to open the formation, and Pyrelith attacked only after the defenders compressed against positions that no longer carried useful relay load. The repaired infrastructure that had made the eastern route look important was dismantled after its controls were secured.

Tianlan's reserve closed the remaining reinforcement routes between the three battles. He used one short Falcon bond near sunset to confirm that a demonic group moving north was not circling back toward the river, then released the perspective and let the local commanders finish containing it. The other healthy Falcon had already descended to rest on a high ridge, and Tianlan did not call it back into the air simply because the operation had not formally ended. The third remained far behind the front with the recovery formations, exactly where it belonged.

By late afternoon, all three branches were under coalition control and the real relay had been destroyed. The riverbank remained crowded with formation specialists because Xuanyin had them preserve every surviving control component until the deeper response patterns were copied. Haotian joined her over the campaign map after the last spatial trace had faded enough that there was nothing more to follow from the destroyed relay itself. The three stronger relationships they had identified during the verification cycle remained marked north-east of their current position.

Xuanyin tapped the first line. "This one reacts often. It changed after almost every probe, even when the local relay barely moved." She shifted to the second, where the recorded pressure was heavier but less frequent, and said it had accepted much larger transfers without changing state as often. The third route was quieter than either of them, though it had remained present through every verification sequence.

Tianlan arrived while she was comparing the three. Mud covered the lower part of his armor from the valley fighting, and a shallow cut crossed the back of one hand, though neither injury affected the way he carried his spear. He looked over the map and asked whether they finally knew which direction led deeper, and Xuanyin told him, "All three do. The question now is what each one is doing."

Yueru and Lianhua joined the command group after their own sectors were released from the final clearing operations. Yueru looked at the three routes and asked whether the quiet one was another fake, but Xuanyin shook her head and explained that all three had been part of the deeper verification system. Lianhua studied the pressure notes before saying that the quiet route bothered her more than the others because it had remained present without carrying enough obvious burden to explain why the network kept checking it.

Haotian followed the three recorded relationships through what remained of the spatial traces. The first route appeared reactive, taking frequent changes as though it were involved in responding to local disturbances. The second carried heavier burden in intermittent waves, suggesting that whatever lay beyond it was built to accept large transfers rather than constant small adjustments. The third remained difficult to interpret, but its quietness had persisted even when the other two routes changed significantly.

Xuanyin did not assign a primary target yet. She ordered three scouting groups to move toward the newly exposed routes while the main army rotated the people who had spent the day holding river receiving formations and clearing the decoys. Umbrel Spire would lead on the ground, Celestara would maintain broader observation above the forests and ridges, and Veridian Prime would follow closely enough to determine which physical paths could support larger formations if the scouts found something worth attacking.

The hierarchy emerging from the network was becoming clearer with each operation. The rifts themselves depended on anchors, the anchor systems could feed reinforcement arteries, and the arteries connected through relays capable of monitoring nearby structures rather than merely carrying pressure. The river relay had shown that those local systems reported into something larger, because its verification pulses had traveled beyond the three false branches and returned through a deeper structure controlling multiple genuine routes. Haotian and Xuanyin still did not know how many layers remained between them and the Main Rift, but they were no longer moving through isolated rift positions without understanding how one battlefield affected another.

Xuanyin rolled the old three-branch map far enough aside to give the new routes more space. "The scouts move now, but nobody follows them with a legion until they identify the next physical structures," she told the forward officers while Blue Sphere specialists copied the route information. "We already know the Abyss is willing to build convincing false targets. I do not want three armies attacking three things merely because all three were kind enough to be visible."

One officer asked what they should do if all three routes proved genuine. Xuanyin looked toward Haotian, but he did not answer for her, and after a moment she said, "Then we stop thinking of them as three separate targets and find out what they share." The officer nodded, understanding that the answer came from the same lesson the river relay had just forced them to learn.

The first Umbrel scouts entered the forest before darkness fully settled. Celestara shifted its patrols farther north-east, while Veridian Prime teams prepared to follow as soon as the scouts marked the first stable ground routes. Behind them, Marephoros cultivators were still releasing trapped pressure from the river receiving arrays, and Pyrelith specialists were destroying the last isolated housings from the northern and eastern decoys.

Haotian remained beside Xuanyin until the first scouting markers began moving across the command map. One route reacted frequently, another carried heavy intermittent burden, and the third remained quiet enough that none of the formation specialists wanted to dismiss it after what they had just learned. The coalition had not yet reached the larger structure beyond those paths, but it now possessed three genuine relationships leading toward it and enough experience with the Abyss's deception to avoid treating the most obvious one as automatically important.

By the time the remaining daylight disappeared behind the wooded ridges, the river relay had been reduced to a flooded cavity reinforced temporarily by Veridian roots. The last wounded from the three ambushes were already moving south, replacement teams were passing them in the opposite direction, and Xuanyin's command formation had shifted its attention entirely toward the routes ahead. The coalition did not need to remain beside the destroyed relay once its information had been extracted, so the forward elements began following the three genuine paths while the rest of the army finished its work behind them.
