Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — The Process

Greyson rushed into his house and went straight to the infirmary. Indianna's weight in his arms didn't slow him down one bit. "Doc!" Greyson yelled, kicking the door open with his boot. "Doc, where the hell are you?" He laid Indianna on the hospital bed and turned just as a middle-aged man with greying hair entered the room.

"Oh my-"

Doc looked at Indianna, who was shaking violently, and Greyson clenched his hands into fists. "Don't just fucking stare at her, Doc! Help her!" he growled, and Doc nodded, hurrying over to Indianna's side.

"She's... She's starting the process. I wasn't aware we had any shifts happening soon."

Indianna screamed out in pain as her stomach felt like it was being ripped apart by knives. She wasn't unconscious, but she wasn't in control of her body. She could feel herself shaking, but she couldn't find the energy to move any part of her body. All she felt was pain.

"She's not a fucking pack member, help her now, Doc!" Greyson growled, power oozing from his voice.

"Not a pack member?" Doc questioned as he held his hand to Indianna's forehead. "Alp-"

"Doc, unless you want your heart ripped out and shoved up your fucking ass, I would advise you to do something and help her!"

Doc coughed, paling ever so slightly at Greyson's threat, even though he should be used to it by now. "Her core body temperature is rising," he said. "I need to cool it down."

"Then do it!" Greyson snapped and tensed when Indianna stiffened and screamed again. Her body started to shake violently, and her eyes rolled to the back of her head.

Doc cursed. "She's seizing. Greyson, I need to give her medication to stop the seizure before it causes any damage. Can you hold her arm for me?"

Greyson did as he was told and held Indianna's arm out as Ace, Kal, Harry, and Brooklyn watched from the side of the room. Brooklyn had tears in her eyes, and Harry was holding her to his chest. He placed his hand on the back of her head, turning her face into his chest so she couldn't watch. Harry's face was emotionless.

"Ace, hold the bottom of her arm still!" Doc instructed. Once Ace was in place, Doc worked in between Greyson and Ace, expertly inserting and securing a cannula into Indianna's arm so he could administer the medication. "Ace, you can let go, but make yourself useful and connect up an oxygen mask for her." Doc turned to a tray he had pulled up beside him and picked up a needle and syringe, drawing the medication up. He had it connected to the cannula in Indianna's arm in seconds and nodded to Greyson. "You can let go. I've given her a benzo. It's fast-acting, and she should stop seizing very quickly. I need her clothes off, though. We need to lower her body temperature. It's contributing to the seizure."

"Everyone out," Greyson growled.

"Greyson, an extra pair of hands may be helpful-"

"The two of us will manage fine," Greyson snapped, casting his gaze to his friends. "Get out, now."

"You know where we are if you need us," Ace said kindly, and Harry led them out of the room, pulling Brooklyn out with him.

"Greyson, who is this girl?" Doc asked, eyebrows raised curiously. He looked at Indianna, who was now relaxed; the seizure had stopped. "And do you know if she has shown any signs of the change recently?"

"Yes. She hasn't been well for the past few days, but that doesn't explain why she has reacted like this," Greyson said worriedly. "I've never known anyone to have a seizure before."

"It's uncommon," Doc said as he started to hook Indianna up to machines to monitor her. Greyson had started to cut away Indianna's top in an attempt to cool her body temperature. "It's more common in those who are physically unprepared for the change. What do you know about this girl?"

"She's my-"

There was a groan, and Indianna opened her eyes, blinking groggily. "What is going on?" she whispered and looked around in confusion. Her eyes locked onto Greyson just as a ripple of pain shot through her, and she cried out. Her hands shot out and she grabbed onto Greyson's arm, yelling loudly. "Greyson," she whimpered, and it was then she noticed the cannula in her arm and a blood pressure cuff on her other arm. There were wires running up to her body, connected to sticky dots on her shoulders and hips.

Indianna started to panic. "What's going on?" she demanded and weakly reached out to pull at the multiple wires, wanting them gone. "Where am I? What's all this? I don't want, I don't like, I just-"

"Sugar, just try to relax," Greyson said. "This is Doc, and he's helping you-"

"No, no, no, no!" Indianna shook her head frantically and sat up, pulling at the Velcro that secured the blood pressure cuff to her arm. Her eyes were wide and wild; she clearly wasn't fully aware of what was going on. Another wave of pain hit her, and she groaned, doubling over but still attempting to free herself.

"Stop it," Greyson ordered. "Just lie back down-"

"Let me go!" Indianna shouted and yelled when Greyson grabbed her hands, stopping her from disconnecting herself from the monitoring. "Let me go! Get off of me!"

"People can be rather emotional after having a seizure," Doc explained. "We need her to calm down. She's just going to get hotter if she's frantic, and we want to avoid that."

"Yeah, I guessed that much," Greyson growled and struggled to hold Indianna's flailing limbs still. "Sugar, listen to me-"

"Get off!" Indianna shouted, fighting against Greyson.

"Don't make me pin you to the damn bed, sugar," Greyson warned.

"I can't be here," Indianna whimpered. She kicked a leg up, almost hitting Doc in the face. Greyson sighed and climbed onto the bed, straddling Indianna so she couldn't move her legs. He pinned her arms above her head, but she still tried madly to squirm her way out from underneath him.

"I don't do hospitals. I need to go! Greyson, let me-" Her shout was cut off when she groaned in pain. "P-please!" she whispered.

Doc had retrieved something from a cupboard, and Indianna screamed when she felt him securing something soft around her ankles. The same restraints were then placed on her wrists, and Greyson let go of her, only for her arms to be pulled down to her sides. She couldn't move. Soft restraints around her ankles and wrists trapped her to the bed, and Greyson climbed off her. She panicked and pulled desperately, but she was stuck.

"What are you doing?" she cried. "You have to let me go! Please! You can't do this! You can't!" Indianna gritted her teeth and whimpered when she experienced more pain. It lasted a while as she stopped fighting and attempted to curl up in herself, tears slipping down her cheeks.

"Listen to me. You're going through a process right now. This is only the beginning. It comes in three stages. Pain is the first one."

"You and your bloody half-complete answers!" Indianna seethed and groaned again, pulling pathetically at her restraints. "You can't keep me here-" Another cry of pain escaped her, and she looked up at Greyson desperately. "What is going on with me?"

"I can't tell you."

Indianna couldn't help but laugh. "Of course, you can't!"

"Soon, sugar, I promise."

"Please let me go," Indianna whispered. "You don't have to tie me up, please. I-"

Doc cut Indianna off. "Hello, dear. I am awfully sorry that we're meeting this way. I'm Doc, and I'm here to look after you. I'm afraid the restraints will have to stay on until you've calmed down quite a bit. You had a seizure, and it's very common to be emotional and erratic after them. Once you're more yourself, we can let you go."

It was very unlike her, but she screamed loudly in frustration. The seizure and the pain were clearly messing with her emotions. "I hate you!" she yelled at Greyson. "You need to let me go, right fucking now!"

"And you need to calm the fuck down," Greyson said.

"I-" More pain stopped Indianna. "Oh my gosh, make it stop!"

Doc had his back to them and was drawing up more medication.

"Indie, look at me. Sugar. Indianna!" Greyson snapped and grabbed Indianna's face, turning her head to his. He pressed his lips to hers and, for a few short seconds, everything stopped. The pain. The irrational emotions. All Indianna could focus on was the sparks, and she nearly melted. Her heart rate calmed down, and she wished desperately that she could reach out and touch Greyson.

"I hate you," Indianna grumbled when Greyson pulled away.

Greyson smiled, brushing his thumb over her lip. "I promise you that I'll explain everything, sugar. You just need to get through this."

"Let me go."

"No."

"You're an asshole."

"I know. I-" Greyson cursed. "Doc, she's seizing again!"

"That was her fourth seizure. When she wakes, we will have to keep a close eye on her," Doc said, looking down at Indianna. "And we'll have to pray that her post-ictal stages aren't as wild as the first one."

"Why is she having so many seizures, Doc? Surely it can't just be because she's not prepared. She's strong, healthy-"

"It's because of you."

Greyson turned as a woman walked into the room. She was in her mid-twenties and had dark hair tied up into a ponytail. Heels echoed on the tile floor as she stood next to Greyson. Blue eyes looked down at Indianna; they flickered ever so slightly with worry.

"You're an Alpha. She's your Luna. Her body has to prepare to evolve into something more than an average pack member. The process is affecting her more than a commoner."

"Kirstie," Greyson said. "When did you get back? Why did you come back?"

"Because of her." Kirstie turned to Greyson and raised her eyebrows. "What, no hello? No I missed you? No kind greeting for your one and only sister?"

Greyson shrugged his shoulders and looked back at Indianna, who was unconscious on the bed, her breathing relaxed.

"You're a miserable git," Kirstie snapped.

"Doc, leave," Greyson ordered.

"Please. And thank you," Kirstie added, smiling at Doc, who left the two siblings alone. They both watched Indianna for a few minutes, a comfortable silence between them.

"She's beautiful, Grey."

"I know."

"Why didn't you tell me you found your mate?"

Greyson shrugged and stuffed his hands into his pockets. "I didn't want to announce it to the world. How did you find out?"

"Mum. Why not?"

"I am the Alpha of one of the most powerful packs in the world, Kirstie," Greyson said. "If word got out that I had found her, then she would be more of a target than she is already."

"Is already?" Kirstie repeated.

"She's Indianna Hughs."

Kirstie's eyes widened. "Holy shit. She's the daughter of-"

"Yes."

"Oh my gosh! Her parents were attacked by Rogue. Her dad... Gosh, poor girl."

"And her," Greyson said through gritted teeth and gently traced the inside of Indianna's wrist where the bite mark was. "He attacked her too, and now he's here. He's back for her."

Kirstie stiffened. "He showed himself? To you?"

"He was less than 20 meters away from me last night. I let him go."

"Why-"

"She was in the car and freaking out!" Greyson growled. "She was my priority. Kirstie, I have to tell her everything, and I don't know how."

"You mean she doesn't know about us? About herself?"

"Her mother brought her up hidden from us. She has no clue."

"Oh, shit," Kirstie breathed.

"She's... sensitive, Kirst," Greyson sighed. "She's shy. I don't know how she's going to handle all of this."

"I heard her screaming and swearing earlier," Kirstie said disbelievingly. "She doesn't seem it."

"She was highly emotional after having a seizure. She's not like that. Well, she's not like that with everyone else. She has no problem getting pissed and raising her voice at me."

"You are highly irritating," Kirstie shrugged.

Greyson glared at his sister. "I can handle her annoyed and angry. I don't care about that. I just don't want her to be scared of me. I don't know what I would do if I tell her and she fears me."

"You're just going to have to do it, Grey. You could ask Brooke to help? She's a sweet girl."

Greyson shook his head. "She's shy with her."

"What about Ace? Or Kal?"

"If I want her to remain quiet and talk in short sentences, then they will be bloody brilliant to have around," Greyson muttered.

"So she's shy around absolutely everyone but you?"

"Bingo. Unless she gets really mad or freaked out like earlier."

"Then tell her in front of everyone. If she feels shy, then she will be less likely to react to the news rashly," Kirstie suggested. "It will give it time to sink in, and she can process it properly without freaking out majorly."

Greyson sighed and rubbed his eyes tiredly. He nodded and looked down at Indianna. When she woke up, he would give her the answers to her questions.

All of them.
