Chapter 15 - Extra III: Clarke's Glossary

For the Clarke family, language is as much a tool as a scythe. To navigate the shadows of Hillingdon and the intricacies of the "Work," one must master the terminology used by generations of Notable Reapers.

The Core Mechanics

* The Accounting: The overarching philosophy that the universe is a mathematical system of energy. Every action has a cost, and every death is a transaction that must be closed.

* The Audit: The formal process of inspecting a soul's "debt." An Auditor (a Clarke) assesses whether a spirit has withheld energy or left behind too much residue, then forcibly balances the books.

* The Balance: A state of metaphysical equilibrium where the physical world and the spiritual plane remain separate. When the Balance fails, reality begins to "glitch."

Anomalies and Waste

* The Leakage: Raw, unrefined emotional or spiritual energy that fails to cross over. It manifests as environmental distortions, such as "static" in the air or cold spots.

* The Residue (Sludge): A physical manifestation of a soul's ego or greed. It often appears as an iridescent violet, oil-like substance that is corrosive to the touch and carries the memories of the deceased.

* Static Birds (White Blurs): Non-sentient glitches in reality that look like white birds with impossible anatomy (too many wings or eyes). They act as natural indicators of high "leakage" areas.

* Attachment (Grade 1-5): The severity of a soul's refusal to leave. A "Grade 4 Lingering Attachment" is powerful enough to warp the architecture of a building.

Tools of the Trade

* Signet Ring (The Auditor's Key): A family heirloom passed down to the active Auditor. It allows the wearer to "see" the true debt of a soul and acts as a focal point for balancing energy.

* The Ledger: A massive, leather-bound book (often kept by Aunt Hel) that tracks the deaths and debts within the London Borough of Hillingdon.

* Scrying Basin: A bowl of dark, reflective liquid (usually mercury or "treated" water) used to view events across the veil or locate "thin spots" in the borough.

* Iron-Salt Scrub: A caustic mixture used to physically remove violet residue from the physical world. It "burns" the ego away, leaving only gray ash.

The Geography of Hillingdon

* Thin Spots: Areas where the veil between worlds is worn down. In 2024, these are often high-traffic zones like Heathrow Airport or Uxbridge Station.

* The Primary Exit Point: Specifically referring to Heathrow's Runway 27R. The sheer volume of human "goodbyes" and transitions makes it the easiest place for energy to be siphoned out of this reality.

* The Vein: The Grand Union Canal. Water acts as a conductor for leakage, making the canal a dangerous "highway" for unresolved spirits.

The Hierarchy

* Notable Reaper: A title held by the lead Auditor of the region (currently Aunt Hel). They are responsible for the heavy-duty "settlements."

* The Custodian: A Clarke who chooses to stay in the physical world to manage the family's presence and hide the Work from the "Unseeing" (normal people).

* The Debt-Bound: Any soul that has failed its Audit and is forced to remain in the manor's "Urns" until their energy is purified.
