Night had fully settled over the city.
Amelia was still watching the building where Mrs. Vivian worked. After Vivian had lowered the blinds earlier, Amelia decided to leave the adjacent parking lot and wait on the street instead, engine off, lights dimmed.
Ten o'clock.
At last, Vivian's car exited the building's underground garage.
She was alone.
Amelia started the engine and followed at a careful distance.
Vivian drove straight home.
When she arrived, she stepped out of her car quickly. The house lights were all on. Before reaching the front door, she adjusted her blouse, smoothed her hair, and took a steadying breath.
Just as she was about to insert the key, the door opened.
Lukas was there.
He had already returned from the birthday gathering at the library and was now celebrating at home with close friends and family.
Vivian froze for half a second, clearly surprised.
Lukas, however, did not look pleased to see her.
