Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Breaking Out (3)

As the last guard fell, Jian Wei turned to Lian Yan, a smile playing on his lips. He stepped closer to her, his eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her heart flutter. "You did have a purpose here," he said, his voice soft towards her. "Do not think that you did not."

Lian Yan felt a warmth spread through her at his words, a sense of validation and belonging that she had not felt in a long time. She had doubted her role in their mission, had wondered if she was truly needed. But Jian Wei's words, his belief in her, chased those doubts away.

He pulled her close, his gaze boring into hers with an intensity that made her heart race. "I needed someone to help my uncle get out of those chains, and you did it," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was able to get through and get here to fight with my uncle to stop these guards. You were a great help."

Lian Yan was taken aback by his sudden closeness, her mind flashing back to the first time they had met, the first time he had pulled her close like this. A faint blush crept up her cheeks as she stared into his face, her heart pounding in her chest. "T-Thanks," she stammered, her voice barely audible. "Should we all hurry?"

Jian Wei nodded, his smile widening. He took her hand, his grip firm and reassuring, and turned to his uncle. Cui Delun was already at the prison door, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he looked at the two of them.

Poor old man was still covered in some dust and dirt, yet seems like he wasn't Jian Wei's main focus.

"Come on, love birds," he said, his voice laced with teasing. "I didn't think my nephew already got a wife."

Lian Yan felt her blush deepen at his words. She pulled her hand away from Jian Wei's, her eyes flashing with indignation. "I am not his wife!" she retorted, her voice sharp and defensive. She hurried past both men, her heart pounding in her chest. She was falling for that tease.

Cui Delun would then smirk at his nephew, "I think you chose a good one."

But as she reached the end of the corridor, she paused, her brow furrowing in confusion. There were two ways to go, two paths that stretched out before her. She hadn't entered from the front entrance, that much was obvious. But which way should they go?

She turned to Jian Wei and Cui Delun, her eyes wide with uncertainty. "Which way?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The prison was a labyrinth of shadows and danger, and every corner held the potential for disaster. They could even come across more prison guards if she led the way.

Cui Delun stepped up beside her, his eyes scanning the two paths. He turned to his nephew, his brow furrowed in thought. "Which way?" he asked, his voice echoing Lian Yan's uncertainty.

Jian Wei stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he studied the two paths. He was silent for a moment, his mind weighing the options before them. Then, with a sudden certainty, he turned to the left. "This way," he said, his voice firm and sure. "I remember this path. It leads to the courtyard, to freedom." He took Lian Yan's hand once more, pulling her along with him while his Uncle just follows behind the two of them.

As they ventured deeper into the prison's labyrinthine corridors, the trio found themselves navigating a world of shadows and whispers. The air was thick with tension, every sound amplified in the silence of their stealthy progress. Jian Wei, ever vigilant, held a finger to his lips, signaling for silence as they approached a junction where the flickering light of torches cast long, dancing shadows on the cold stone walls.

Lian Yan, her heart pounding in her chest, nodded in understanding. She could feel the weight of their situation, the urgency that propelled them forward. Yet, there was a sense of anticipation in the air, a shared understanding that passed between her and Jian Wei with every glance, every silent gesture. It was a warmth that blossomed in the darkness, a connection that needed no words.

Suddenly, the sound of laughter echoed down the corridor, bouncing off the stone walls and sending a chill down Lian Yan's spine. The guards were near, their voices a stark reminder of the danger that lurked around every corner. Jian Wei swiftly pulled Lian Yan and Cui Delun into the shadows, pressing them against the cold wall as the guards' laughter grew louder.

"Did you hear about the new prisoner?" one guard chuckled, his voice carrying down the corridor. "They say he's a madman, screaming about conspiracies and treachery."

Another guard joined in the laughter, his voice a deep rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stones beneath their feet. "Aye, and they say he's got the sight. Claims he can see the future in the flames of his torch."

The guards' laughter filled the corridor, their voices a cruel mockery of the darkness that surrounded them. Lian Yan held her breath, her body tense as she pressed herself against the wall. She could feel Jian Wei's presence beside her, a steady and reassuring force in the sea of uncertainty.

As the guards passed by, their laughter fading into the distance, Jian Wei let out a soft sigh of relief. He turned to Lian Yan, his eyes meeting hers in the dim light. There was a warmth in his gaze, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between them. Lian Yan felt her heart flutter in response, a blush creeping up her cheeks as she quickly looked away.

Cui Delun, his eyes twinkling with amusement, watched the silent exchange between the two young people. "Ah, young and in love," he teased, his voice a low murmur that carried a hint of laughter.

Lian Yan felt her blush deepen at his words, her eyes flashing with indignation. "We are not—" she began, her voice a sharp whisper.

But Jian Wei silenced her with a gentle touch, his finger pressed against her lips. He shook his head, his eyes wide with warning as the sound of more guards echoed down the corridor. The trio pressed themselves against the wall once more, their bodies melting into the shadows as the guards' voices grew louder.

The guards passed by once more, their footsteps a steady rhythm that seemed to echo in the silence of their wake. As their voices faded into the distance, Jian Wei let out another soft sigh of relief. He turned to Lian Yan, his eyes meeting hers once more. There was a sense of understanding in his gaze, a silent acknowledgment of the journey that lay ahead. More guards could be changing their shift at this time.

They continued on their path, their steps cautious and measured as they navigated the twists and turns of the prison's corridors. Each junction brought with it a sense of wariness, a tension that seemed to coil tighter with every sound, every whisper of danger. It was more of a wonder how Jian Wei could recall the whole pathway.

Finally, all three of them had made it out and for certain. Cui Delun was going to have to go into hiding with Lian Yan. Throughout the time, Jian Wei did not even let go of Lian Yan's hand.

"Are you both going to let go of each other's hand or does it prove my point?" Cui Delun would be left with another amused smile at the two. His hand just points to their hands. It was very obvious in front of him.
