Chapter 9 - who is ronald?

Max: I know he's not just killing randomly or out of rage—this is all carefully planned. We knew Henry would be next. We warned him... but still.

Roy: If I'm being honest, I don't feel sorry for James. Not even a bit.

Max: Truthfully... I'm glad he's dead.

Roy: But if you've noticed, his killing methods keep changing. The only consistent thing is the chit written in the victim's blood.

Max: He used a knife for the doctor. He pushed the ward boy with a minor cut. He killed James with a hammer, and attacked Liam with it too. But Henry? He used everything—a knife, a vase, a chair, maybe even his bare hands.

Roy: The knife was used in two cases. The hammer in two as well. The vase, the push, and the chair—each once.

Max: You think he's trying to send us a message?

Roy: Or it might just be coincidence. But I wouldn't ignore it.

Max: (Notices a security camera) A camera. Let's check the footage.

Roy: Got it.

(They use the victim's fingerprint to unlock his phone and access the CCTV system—only to find the footage already deleted.)

Max: Damn it.

Roy: So... he knew the CCTV could be accessed from Henry's phone.

Max: He knows everything about his victims—their weaknesses, their routines... even their tech setups.

Roy: If I were him, I'd do the same. Why leave any clues behind?

Max: These chits... they might be connected.

Roy: Maybe. But right now they're just questions... or mockeries. We can't tell yet.

Max: Why is there no connection?! (Frustrated, he notices Roy writing with his left hand. A memory flashes of Liam saying the killer was left-handed.)

You never told me you were left-handed.

Roy: Oh no—I'm ambidextrous. I can use both hands for writing or other stuff. Look— (He switches to writing with his right hand.)

My right hand has a better grip, so I usually hold the diary in that hand. But my writing doesn't change much either way.

Max: Oh… yeah, I see.

Roy (half-smiling): Wait—did you think I could be the killer?

Max (caught off-guard): Well…

Roy (calmly): That's okay. Until we find solid evidence, everyone's a suspect… even you and me.

Max (nods): Good that you understand.

Roy: Just think — you could be the killer too. Your height's over 5'5", right?

Max: Well...

Roy: But you're not. We're always together. If either of us were the killer, then how did the wardboy die? We were together at that time... weren't we?

Max: You're right. Maybe I'm overthinking.

Max turns toward the body. Roy gives a firm smirk behind him.]

[Scene shifts: A modern bank office]

A young woman, around 25 years old and still unmarried, enters confidently. She removes her sunglasses and sits at the manager's desk.

Riya:

"It's me, Miss Riya — at your service, sir."

(She flashes a clever smile.)

[Scene shifts: The killer's hideout — a dark room with a board full of photos.]

He puts a red X over Henry's photo.

Then, he draws a circle around Riya's picture.

Next to her photo is Max's.

The Man (muttering to himself):

"Soon, your wish will come true, Max... but you, young lady — I'm coming for you first."

[On the board beneath each photo:]

Doctor – Revenge of Mother

Oliver (Wardboy), James, Henry, Liam – Revenge of Sister

Riya – Betrayal & Revenge of Brother

Max – Revenge of Love

Scene: Max and Roy are in a room scattered with papers and crime photos. Max looks exhausted.

Max (rubbing his temples): We know four of the murders are connected. Each had a reason... but one of them still doesn't add up. And there are more coming. There's no clear connection. What are we missing?

Roy (munching on peanuts): Maybe he has personal issues with all of them?

Max: That's possible. But how do we know who he has issues with, if we don't even know who he is?

Roy (suddenly alert): Wait. Maybe we can figure out who he is.

Max (looking up, curious): How?

Roy: Think about it — all of this started after that girl's murder case. What if the killer was close to her? Like a lover, a sibling, or a family member. That kind of pain can drive someone to revenge.

Max (realizing): Damn. That makes sense. Let me call the team.

(Max picks up his phone and dials)

Max (on call): I need every possible detail on the female victim from the murder case three years ago. Her name, age, family, known relationships, anything you've got. Now.

(He hangs up and looks at Roy, impressed)

Max: You're getting smarter.

Roy (grinning): Must be the peanuts. Brain food.

Max (half-smirking): Maybe I should grab a handful too.

The next day, Max is sitting with the case file of the girl and everyone close to her.

Max:

"The girl's name was Layla. She was 18 when she died. She had two brothers and a mother. Her mother died of cancer, one brother is currently in jail for robbery, and the other... has been missing for a long time. His name is Ronald. At the time of Layla's death, Ronald was 22, and the other brother, Nick, was 20."

Roy:

"Okay, but that still doesn't explain the doctor's death."

Max:

"Maybe we should go through her mother's death report."

Roy:

"Should we?"

Max: (flipping through pages)

"Name: Linda Milton. Age: 50. Cause of death: cancer. In-charge: Dr. Wellwood." (He glances at Roy.)

Roy:

"Isn't that the doctor who got killed?"

Max:

"It is."

Roy:

"Check the hospital name."

Max: (reading aloud)

"It's the same."

Roy:

"From our investigation, we know Dr. Wellwood was the only doctor with that name at the hospital."

Max:

"So it's clear. The killer is likely one of her brothers. A lover wouldn't take revenge for the death of her mother."

Roy:

"And she didn't seem to have any other close relatives — no uncles, no aunts."

Max:

"That narrows it down. If one brother has been in jail for a year, then the prime suspect is the missing brother."

Roy:

"You mean Ronald?"

Max:

"Yeah."

Roy:

But there's been no trace of Ronald for over a year.

Max:

That's what's so shocking—no phone activity, no bank access, not even a final sighting.

Roy:

It's like he just vanished.

Max:

We have to find him.

Roy:

But how?

Max:

For now, let's check everything we can from the funeral or the court records. Someone must have seen him. Maybe he showed up in some CCTV footage.

Roy:

No one keeps years-old footage.

Max:

Then we should talk to his brother in jail. He might know something.

Roy:

At the very least, we might get hold of Ronald's old photos.
