People stayed inside their housing modules, sleeping with their boots on and keeping makeshift weapons close to their beds. On the perimeter walls, the Vanguard mercenaries and Peacekeepers pulled triple shifts, their eyes burning from staring through thermal optics into the darkness of the jungle. Every rustle of a violet fern and every distant screech of an unseen predator sent a jolt of adrenaline through the defenders.
And high above them, Marcos's newest creation hunted for any sign of whoever had fired the railgun that had injured the wolf. The Bloodhound, as Marcos named it, was quite an interesting piece of technology and engineering. Unlike the robust lifter drones built for raw payload capacity and the scout drones built purely for observation, this specialized unit was sleek and silent.
However, it flew at a cruising altitude of exactly one thousand meters, low enough to the ground where it could be assaulted by some of this planet's flying wildlife, but low enough to map the intricate topographical changes of the basin without obstruction, and high enough to avoid the towering, chaotic tangles of the jungle canopy.
As it swept over the eastern sector where the white matriarch had been shot, its deep-penetrating thermal optics sliced through the dense foliage, searching for the micro-fluctuations in ambient temperature that would indicate a recent encampment, a discarded ration wrapper, or a footprint left in the mud. Its ground-penetrating radar pinged the earth below, mapping the subterranean root structures and searching for hidden metallic anomalies. And securely housed within its chassis were highly sensitive chemical sniffers that pulled in the humid air, hunting for the faintest isotopic residue of the alien railgun slug Octavia had recovered.
It swept the east for a day and a half, then, per Mark's orders, Marcos redirected the drone north, sending it over the jagged, towering foothills of the mountain range where the Horizon had crashed, scanning the very area the civilian miners were supposed to be operating in.
For three days, Mark stood on the bridge of the Shepherd, staring at the holographic tactical table alongside Juan, Valerius, and Cassius. They watched the Bloodhound's flight path paint the map in a grid of analyzed data, revealing the intricate valleys and ridges of the northern mountains.
And for three days, it found absolutely nothing.
"The sweeps seem to be quite conclusive, Mark," Marcos reported on the morning of the fourth day, his voice echoing in the quiet bridge as the holographic map glowed a soft blue. "There appear to be no anomalous thermal signatures within a fifty-kilometer radius. The ground-penetrating radar detected no subterranean structures or artificial hollows. The isotopic sniffers have not picked up a single trace of the railgun munition in the atmosphere."
Juan leaned tiredly against the edge of the tactical table, rubbing a scarred hand over his exhausted face. "So what are we dealing with? Ghosts? Someone shot that wolf, Marcos. Bullets don't just magically appear out of thin air."
"Yeah, no shit," Marcos replied in a snarky tone. "However, given the lack of infrastructure, encampments, or lingering heat signatures, the most logical deduction is that the shooter, or shooters, were highly mobile. Possibly a hunting party that pushed far out of their usual territory, took a shot, and immediately retreated when the pack of wolves retaliated or when they realized they were encroaching on our perimeter."
Mark crossed his arms, staring at the glowing blue map. He hated the unknown. He hated knowing there was a sapient, armed threat on the board he couldn't pin down. But he also knew that you couldn't run a society on pure, unadulterated paranoia.
"We can't stay locked in our cages forever," Mark said quietly, making the call. He tapped his comms, bridging the connection to the city's PA system. "Marcos, drop the alert level from Red to Yellow. Disengage the blast doors on the Shepherd and spin the factories back up. Tell the people they can go back to work."
"If you say so... Executing alert downgrade now," Marcos confirmed.
Juan let out a long, ragged exhale. "I'll have my men maintain rolling patrols along the perimeter, just in case. But the boys need to rack out, Mark. We've been burning the candle at both ends."
"Yeah, I agree on that. Let them get some rest. We'll begin to push north again tomorrow," Mark said while nodding his head. "I want that maglev line built as soon as possible. We need materials to experiment with new things and to keep on building up without worries."
The return to normalcy was cautious, but the necessity of survival pushed the colony forward. Before a single human stepped foot outside the northern gates, Marcos initiated what had been titled as Phase Two of their industrial expansion.
To build a forty-kilometer maglev line through a prehistoric jungle, they needed more than just raw manpower. That meant that they needed localized manufacturing on the front lines. The colossal 25x25-meter nanoprinter stationed in the industrial sector roared to life and started reproducing.
Over the course of the fifth day, the 25x25m nanoprinter extruded an entirely new fleet of machines. First, it printed the robust S-Alloy chassis, equipped with multi-directional, all-terrain continuous tracks designed to conquer the basin's uneven terrain. Then, onto these mobile platforms, the massive printer mounted fully functional 8x8-meter nanoprinters, suspended on multi-axis gantry arms.
Unlike when they were on Mechanicus station, these printers had undergone a redesign and would not need to rely on cumbersome material hoppers. Instead, the rear of each unit featured a powerful electromagnetic field generator, which, during feeding, would simply levitate and suck in any unbolted raw material that matched the printer's current schematic requirements, pulling them directly into the molecular forge.
However, to counteract planetary gravity during the extrusion process, the wide conveyor belt was maintained at the front end to support the newly created infrastructure as it materialized. There was also the original variant that lacked these things and didn't really need them, but it was only useful for printing in the zero-G vacuum of space.
They were also a little different in that their coding was altered. Unlike the previous printers, which had to be manually guided either by controls or by Marcos, these new printers were automated and capable of driving directly into the wilderness after being given a direct set of instructions, not stopping their work and switching to feeding on their own until they were either done with their task or were given an updated task that overrode the previous one. They were basically printers with programming that acted as dummy AIs that had substantially lowered intelligence levels.
By the sixth day, the automated logging crawlers were fired back up. When Aurelia and the seventy-five civilian miners marched out the northern gates, they were flanked by a heavily armed convoy of Vanguard transports, two full platoons of Peacekeepers, and a dozen of the new 8x8m mobile printers rolling steadily behind them on their massive treads.
Mark had been left scratching his head as he, for the life of him, couldn't think of a reason why he hadn't done this before. It would have saved so much time, and who knows just how far they would have come or how many things they would have been able to make had they taken this approach sooner.
The construction of the maglev system officially resumed, and it was a marvel of raw industrial power.
The deforestation effort alone was a feat in itself since the towering, bioluminescent violet trees of Rubrion Prime did not yield easily. The logging crawlers chewed through the dense jungle, their spinning S-Alloy saw blades and plasma cutters slicing through trunks of the trees, with some even being as wide as 20-30 meters. The sheer volume of timber was staggering, but Marcos wasted nothing. Specialized harvester drones followed the crawlers, stripping the alien wood and hauling it back to the agricultural sector to be processed into carbon-rich compost and supplementary biofuel just in case they ever needed it.
Once a forty-meter-wide path was cleared through the trees, the civilian miners and Peacekeepers moved in, utilizing sonic compactors to pulverize the massive, twisting root systems and compress the soft loam into a rock-hard, stable foundation. The jungle attempted to fight back with stifling humidity, toxic pollen spores, and swarms of aggressive, serpentine amphibians whose nests were disturbed by the vibrations. Still, the perimeter of mercenaries held firm, vaporizing anything that came too close for comfort.
Right on the heels of the compactors came the 8x8m mobile printers and their newly minted mechanized heavy brigade.
During the initial tree-cutting process, Mark had recognized the need for raw, brute-force lifting to speed up the infrastructure deployment, something that would allow the drones to focus on other things. At the same time, the really heavy load was quickly taken care of. He ordered Marcos to scan the loader mech that Kenjiro had pretty much taken ownership of, altering the schematics to vastly increase the hydraulic carrying capacity, widening the chassis a bit, and reinforcing the actuators.
To keep production decentralized and moving rapidly, Marcos used the new 8x8m mobile printer to extrude twelve of these modified, heavy-duty loader mechs right on the front lines. Because the mechs stood at twenty-three and a half feet tall, just shy of the 8-meter benchmark, and measured six meters wide from shoulder to shoulder, the mobile printers extruded them lying flat on their backs to easily fit within their spatial limits. Once the printing was complete, the machines were simply powered on and hoisted themselves upright.
Piloted by the civilian heavy-machinery mechanics, the twelve mechs formed the brute muscle of the operation. However, they weren't tasked with the initial digging. That job belonged to a newly extruded, massive, fully electric excavator whose schematics had been pillaged- ahem, borrowed indefinitely from humanity's archives by Marcos. Powered by high-capacity energy cells, this colossal machine led the vanguard. Operating with high torque efficiency, it used a multi-jointed boom and a massive scoop to effortlessly excavate thirty-meter-deep holes down to the bedrock beneath the deep, rich loam. As soon as a pit was cleared, the excavator crawled forward on its heavy treads to the next coordinate.
Nearby, the mobile printer extruded the foundation pillars, which were solid columns of S-Alloy, each anchored by a wide, 5x5-meter perforated base platform.
The loader mechs hoisted these pillars and lowered them into the prepared holes. Then, using their own specialized shovel attachments, the mechs began to backfill the excavated dirt, utilizing their immense weight and built-in tampers to compact the rich earth.
As they worked, they implemented Marcos's advanced stabilization design. Rather than relying on a single base, three additional 5x5m perforated platforms were sequentially slid down the main pillar. Each platform was locked into place at specific depth intervals as the earth was piled over the one beneath it, creating a multi-tiered anchoring system that provided superior stabilization against the deep, loamy soil and shifting, mountainous topography of the alien basin. It essentially anchored the pillars to the ground, while the perforation allowed groundwater to seep through, preventing any pockets from forming, which would in turn breed instability over time.
Once the pillars were set, the mobile printers maneuvered into position, their multi-axis gantry arms whirring to life to print the track itself, a continuous, segmented line of conductive plating embedded with powerful superconducting electromagnetic coils.
The mechs, the excavator, and the printers worked in flawless, synchronized harmony. As one unit finished extruding a thirty-meter segment of track, complete with internal coolant lines and power conduits designed to funnel raw electricity from the wind turbines, it rolled forward, and the next printer fell in behind it to begin the next segment. The track floated a full meter above the crushed earth, an elevated artery of frictionless transit that would soon connect their sanctuary directly to the mountains.
The civilians worked tirelessly alongside the machines, securing the magnetic nodes, welding the structural supports, and feeling the profound exhaustion that, for some reason, came with a sense of satisfaction in carving a permanent passage into the hostile planet.
While the industrial might of the colony roared and chewed through the jungle outside the walls, a different kind of breakthrough was happening inside the agricultural sector.
Exactly one week after the white wolf had been carried into the city bleeding out, her primary biological healing was complete. Marcos's scaled-up medical frame had miraculously knitted her shredded musculature and torn tissue back together. The prosthetic, which had been created through scaling from the scan of her pup, had been surgically implanted by Dr. Corven to replace her shattered pelvis.
But healing the tissue and walking were two entirely different things.
Mark stood in the medical enclosure, a cup of synthesized coffee in his hand, since the coffee beans they had planted would take their time to grow. He had spent hours here over the last week, sitting on an overturned crate, simply watching the pack leaders. The massive dark burgundy patriarch was sitting patiently by the edge of the pen, his tail giving a soft thump against the dirt every once in a while. The white female was awake, lying on a large, soft carbon-weave mat Dr. Corven had printed for her, and though she looked exhausted, her glowing eyes tracked Mark with a calm, analytical intelligence.
"Welp, I can't keep calling you 'big guy' in my head," Mark muttered, taking a sip of his coffee and looking at the dark burgundy patriarch. "Since you're carrying the weight of this whole family on your back, I have to give you a name befitting of it.... How about Atlas?"
Mark noticed as the massive wolf's ears twitched and it let out a low, rumbling huff from its chest.
"Well, I'll be damned. I guess I'll take that as a yes," Mark smiled slightly. He looked at the white female resting on the mat. "And you... Ivory. Fits the coat."
Dr. Corven walked into the pen, carrying a datapad.
"The biological integration is flawless, Mr. Shephard," she explained, pulling up a detailed holographic schematic of Ivory's hindquarters on a nearby terminal. "The prosthetic is seated perfectly. The surrounding bone and muscle tissue have bonded to the porous metallic surface exactly as designed."
"If it's bonded so perfectly, then why isn't she up and running?" Mark asked, watching Ivory let out a soft whine as she unsuccessfully tried to shift her back legs.
"Because of the nervous system," Corven sighed, adjusting her glasses. "The prosthetic provides the structural support she needs, but her spinal cord and localized nerve clusters suffered massive trauma from the railgun slug. The brain is attempting to send motor-function signals to her hind legs, but the neurological bridge that transmits these messages is out. It's like trying to turn on a light switch when the wires inside the wall are severed."
Mark frowned as he nodded. "Can't the medical frame fix nerve damage?"
"Well... It can. However, nerve regeneration is notoriously slow, even with cellular stimulation. I can't give you an exact time frame, but in humanity's case with the best technology in the IUC, it could take months, perhaps years, for the pathways to naturally rebuild," Corven said, tapping the console and shifting the hologram from the pelvic bone to a highly detailed, glowing three-dimensional map of the wolf's brain.
"But maybe it could be a shorter time frame. I can't say for sure, as I'm not familiar with all of the science behind the healing pad. But while she was sedated, I took the liberty of running a comprehensive neurological scan," Corven continued, her voice taking on a tone of reverence. "If you would be so kind as to look at this, Mark. Just take a quick look at it."
Mark stepped closer to the hologram. "Huh, it looks like she's got a brain... I'm not a neurologist or anything, so I haven't the slightest clue of what it is you want me to notice."
Dr. Corven shook her head with a smile as she began to explain, pointing to specific glowing regions. "The cerebral cortex is incredibly advanced. If you look closely, the areas responsible for social complexity, long-term memory, pattern recognition, and problem-solving are quite well-developed. Meaning, this isn't just a smart pack animal. Rather, this creature possesses a neural architecture that bridges the gap between instinct and true sapience. It explains why the father was able to comprehend your pantomime with the scanner last week. What I'm trying to say is that they are animals with the ability to reason."
"That's interesting, Doc," Mark said, genuinely impressed. "By the way, I named him Atlas and her Ivory. I think he likes his new name."
Dr. Corven nodded in approval. "They do seem like fine names to me."
Mark let out a soft smile as he looked at Ivory. "Yeah, but anyways, how does any of that help her walk?"
"Well, this would mean that her brain is complex enough to support neuralware," Dr. Corven declared, a triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Due to the limitations of our bodies, when a human suffers a severed spine or requires a complex prosthetic limb, we can't just wait around for the nerves to heal. Usually, a user is implanted with a neural link that reads the motor-cortex signals directly from the brain and transmits them wirelessly to the prosthetic."
Mark raised an eyebrow. "You want to put a cybernetic neural link inside a giant alien wolf."
"Correct," Corven nodded eagerly. "I can synthesize a spinal tap and a localized neural lace. If we implant it at the base of her skull, it can read the motor signals she's trying to send to her legs, bypass the damaged nerves entirely, and directly stimulate the muscles in her hindquarters. But it would require highly specialized hardware."
"Hardware that I have already begun fabricating," Marcos interjected, his voice floating smoothly from the enclosure's speakers. "Dr. Corven uploaded her hypothesis to my mainframe last night. I am currently in the process of creating a customized, animal-safe neural lace. However, I am utilizing the opportunity to add a few... proprietary modifications."
Mark looked up at the nearest security camera. "Modifications? Like what?"
"Like a secondary telemetry transmitter," Marcos explained, the hologram on the table splitting in half to show a complex array of audio waveforms alongside the brain scan. "Over the past week, while the rest of the family has been waiting outside our southern gates, I have utilized the Shepherd's long-range sonar and audio sensors to record every single vocalization, whine, huff, and bark they have made."
Marcos paused for dramatic effect. "Humanity has attempted to bridge the communication gap between man and beast for centuries now. Humanity, before its civil war, had spent trillions of credits on Project Dolittle, attempting to map animal vocalizations to complex thought patterns. And in perfect human fashion, they failed and gave up."
"And let me guess," Mark smirked. "You acquired that data."
"Well, it was amongst the data that I had indefinitely borrowed before we left Mechanicus," Marcos corrected smoothly. "Humans failed because they relied solely on audio interpretation, lacking the direct neurological context to assign meaning to the sounds. But now, thanks to Dr. Corven's thesis on the neural link, we will have a direct feed into Ivory's cerebral cortex."
"In other words, you're building a translator," Mark realized, staring at the audio waveforms.
"You could say that, though I'd prefer if you called what I am building a cognitive-audio translation matrix," Marcos said. "By correlating her direct neural spikes, meaning her actual thoughts and emotions, with the specific sounds she and Atlas make, my processing core can rapidly decrypt their language. And considering the circumstances of my code, I predict that we won't just be able to heal her, Mark. But shortly, we are going to communicate with them."

Over the next two weeks, out in the northern sector, the maglev line cut its final kilometers into the wilderness. The S-Alloy tracks now floated over treacherous ravines and plowed seamlessly through what used to be an impenetrable canopy. The Vanguard mercenaries fought daily skirmishes, repelling packs of animals that wandered too close to the loud, intrusive machinery. Though usually, a warning shot was more than enough to spook them, except for the handful of animals that ended up as an extra meal for the wolves. But the perimeter held, and the rail line finally reached the jagged foothills of the northern mountains.
Back in the agricultural sector, Ivory underwent her second major surgery as Dr. Corven, assisted by Severus, carefully implanted the prototype neural lace at the base of the matriarch's skull. The surgery was delicate, requiring microscopic precision to weave the conductive filaments into the spinal column without causing further damage.
The rehabilitation process that followed was slow and arduous. For the first few days, Ivory could barely stand as the neural link had yet to fully calibrate to her specific brainwaves, essentially forcing the highly intelligent predator to re-learn how to fire the muscles in her own legs through artificial relays.
Atlas, however, never left her side. He would walk alongside her as she took her first wobbly, uncoordinated steps, offering his broad shoulder for her to lean against when her artificial pelvis faltered. The pure white pup, which had been affectionately named Snowball by the kids who would come to see the big friendly wolves, often tumbled around their legs, providing a constant source of chaotic, joyful motivation.
By the end of the second week, the limp persisted, but the neural lace had managed to bridge the gap well, interpreting Ivory's complex motor signals and translating them into fluid movements. Eventually, she had begun pacing the perimeter of the enclosure with the predatory grace that defined her species.
And around her thick, muscular neck, she wore a sleek, carbon-weave collar equipped with a localized speaker and a biometric transmitter, which was Marcos's prototype translation device.
By the end of a third week, Mark stood in the agricultural pen alongside Dr. Corven, Kenji, and Marcos's holographic avatar, a welcome result of Marcos's own efforts to integrate the same technology that had allowed him to materialize on the Shepherd. He had even begun drawing the plans, with Mark's help, for decentralized armored server rooms to house his programming. However, the technology required to create something of the same caliber as what Anahrin had created with Marcos was locked behind the wall of knowledge that Mark had to master first, something he had been too occupied to do.
"Alright, Marcos," Mark said, crossing his arms as he looked at Ivory sitting calmly in the dirt with Atlas standing protectively beside her. "The maglev line is officially connecting to the foothills today, and Aurelia is spinning up the deep-core boring machines as we speak. I was hoping you could deliver me a win before I head north to check on them. Let's see if this magic collar of yours actually works."
"I find your lack of faith in me demoralizing," Marcos said.
Mark frowned as he side-eyed Marcos' avatar. "That's not even how the quote-"
Marcos didn't let him finish that thought as he interrupted Mark. "Anyway, I have spent the last fourteen days cross-referencing her neural output with the family's vocalizations. The algorithm has established a foundational baseline. However, please manage your expectations, Mark. The neural architecture of a canine, even an advanced sapient one, does not process language through complex human syntax. It processes reality through sensory input, immediate emotion, and family hierarchy."
"So she's not going to start reciting Shakespeare," Kenji chuckled, tapping away on a datapad linked to the collar.
"That is highly unlikely," Marcos agreed. "I'll be booting up the external speaker now."
A soft, electronic chime emitted from the collar around Ivory's neck, causing the matriarch's ears to twitch. She looked down at her own chest, clearly confused by the sound emanating from the carbon-weave band. She looked up at Mark, then at the holographic avatar of Marcos, and let out a soft, questioning whine.
The collar's processor whirred for a fraction of a second, analyzing the sound and the accompanying spike in her neural lace.
[Confusion. Strange-noise. Not-blood.] A flat, synthesized, and completely genderless voice emitted from the collar's speaker.
Dr. Corven let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "It works! By the gods, it actually translates the conceptual intent!"
Mark stared at the beast, his heart beating a little faster. He activated his armor and took a slow step forward, ensuring his hands were visible and open, which caused Atlas to let out a very low, cautionary rumble in his chest as Mark approached his mate.
However, Ivory didn't back away, and instead, she leaned forward, sniffing Mark's armored gauntlet. She then looked at his faceplate, her glowing eyes locking onto his, and let out a slightly longer, multi-tonal huff, followed by a short, percussive bark.
The collar processed the audio and the neural telemetry.
[Metal-skin. Heals. Pain-gone. Blood-safe.]
Mark couldn't help the massive grin that spread across his face. "Yeah, the pain is gone, and you're safe here."
Atlas, clearly agitated by the strange, unnatural voice coming from his mate's neck, stepped forward. He nudged Ivory with his snout, letting out a sharp, commanding growl directed at Mark and the holographic Marcos.
Ivory turned her head, nuzzling the patriarch's neck. She let out a long, soothing whine, her tail sweeping the dirt, and the collar translated the exchange almost instantly.
[Mate-worry. Sky-fire-hurt. No-hurt-here. Wait.]
"She's telling him to calm down," Corven whispered furiously, typing notes onto her datapad. "She understands that a railgun, or what she refers to as the 'sky-fire,' is what hurt her, and she is actively reassuring the patriarch that we are not the source of that threat. The conceptual mapping is rudimentary, but the emotional intelligence is staggering!"
"It's incredible, Marcos," Mark said, genuinely awed by the breakthrough. "It's choppy, but we can actually understand what they're feeling. What they want."
"Give me a break. It's merely a prototype, Mark," Marcos replied, though there was a distinct note of pride in his voice. "With more time and expanded neural data, I will be able to refine the algorithm to parse more complex syntactic structures. But for now, we have achieved the first ever recorded basic, cross-species conceptual dialogue."
"Metal-skin. Heals," Kenji repeated, grinning at Mark. "Looks like you got a new callsign, man."
But while some celebrated a breakthrough for humankind, eight kilometers to the north, at the very base of the jagged mountain foothills, the atmosphere was a different symphony of industrial destruction.
Sarah wiped a thick layer of grey basalt dust from her visor, coughing into the atmospheric scrubbers of her carbon-weave jumpsuit. The heat inside the newly carved tunnel was stifling. The ambient temperature of the jungle was already brutal, but inside the rock face, surrounded by substantial machinery running at maximum capacity, it felt like standing inside a blast furnace.
"Pressure is holding steady at eighty percent!" Sarah yelled over the deafening, bone-rattling roar of the deep-core borer.
Her foreman, a burly man named Mike who had spent half his life cracking asteroids in the Belt, gave her a thumbs-up from the primary console. "Keep it there! The density on this rock is insane, but the bits are chewing right through it!"
The automated boring machine took up nearly the entire width of the tunnel. Its front face was a rotating set of jagged S-Alloy teeth, grinding into the living rock of the mountain. A slurry of water and chemical lubricants was sprayed continuously over the drill face to prevent it from melting under sheer friction, creating a thick, muddy sludge that coated the tunnel floor.
They were carving out the primary excavation shaft, pushing deep into the foothills to reach the massive lithium deposits Marcos's drones had promised were waiting for them. The noise was so loud that Sarah couldn't even hear herself think. She just felt the vibration rattling her teeth and shaking her internal organs.
Suddenly, the pitch of the boring machine changed, going from a deep, grinding roar to a high-pitched, agonizing metallic scream.
"Whoa, whoa!" Mike shouted, frantically tapping the console as warning lights flared crimson across his screen. "Friction heat is spiking! We hit something hard!"
Before Sarah could respond, a shower of blinding white sparks erupted from the rock face, illuminating the dark tunnel. The entire multi-ton boring machine shuddered violently, throwing itself backward on its treads. A sound like a bomb detonating echoed through the shaft as three of the solid S-Alloy drill teeth violently shattered, sending lethal shards of metal pinging off the walls.
"Shut it down! Shut it down!" Sarah screamed, waving her arms.
Mike slammed his fist onto the emergency kill switch, causing the engines to choke and shut down, forcing the rotating drill face to grind to a halt.
For a moment, the only sound in the tunnel was the hiss of steam venting from the overheated drill and the ragged breathing of the miners. The dust was so thick that Sarah could barely see the console three feet in front of her.
"Is everyone okay?" Mike coughed, waving his hands to clear the air. "Did anyone take shrapnel?"
A chorus of shaky affirmations came from the crew.
"What the hell did we hit?" Sarah muttered, grabbing a high-powered plasma torch from a supply crate. "From what the AI told us, S-Alloy is supposed to cut through anything on this planet."
"Must be a condensed vein of that hyper-dense alien ore the AI was talking about," Mike grunted, grabbing a lumen-rod. "Let's go take a look."
Sarah and Mike squeezed past the massive treads of the stalled boring machine, their boots squelching in the mud and coolant sludge. They approached the freshly cut rock face, the air still shimmering with the residual heat of the shattered drill bits.
Mike clicked on his lumen-rod, casting a bright, stark white beam against the stone.
"That's not an ore vein," Sarah breathed, her eyes going wide.
She stepped closer, raising her gloved hand. Embedded deep within the jagged, broken basalt of the mountain was a massive, perfectly smooth surface that didn't look like rock. It looked like metal. It was a dark, matte grey, completely non-reflective, and untouched by the violent grinding of the S-Alloy drill bits that had shattered against it.
Sarah reached out, wiping away a thick layer of rock dust from the surface.
"Mike..." Sarah whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Look at this."
Mike stepped closer, sweeping his light over the area Sarah had cleared.
Carved into the dark metal were deep, intricate grooves. They weren't the natural striations of geological compression. They were perfectly geometric, interlocking lines that formed sharp, angular patterns. It was writing. Alien glyphs, stamped into the side of a mountain, were buried beneath millions of tons of rock.
"Don't touch it," Mike ordered sharply, taking a step back. He immediately tapped his comms. "Miss Aurelia, we have an Alpha code situation in the primary shaft. You need to get down here right now."
It took the Elite engineer less than three minutes to navigate the tunnel. Aurelia arrived at a dead sprint, her sleek black armor cutting through the dust.
"Give me a report," Aurelia said, her voice strictly professional as she approached the rock face.
"The drill shattered against it," Mike explained, gesturing to the dark metal. "It's smooth. And there's some kind of writing on it."
Aurelia stepped right up to the exposed metal and, without any hesitation, engaged the comprehensive diagnostic scanners built into her armor's gauntlet, running a grid of green lasers over the surface and the glyphs.
She stood there in silence for a long, agonizing minute as her HUD processed the telemetry.
"What is it? Is it a bomb? A machine?" Sarah asked nervously.
"If it is a machine, it is entirely inert," Aurelia stated, her voice tight. "My scanners detect zero power output. No thermal bloom, electromagnetic field, or radiation. It is completely dead, and has probably been so for God knows how long."
Aurelia ran her gauntlet over the glyphs again.
"But it is undeniably artificial," Aurelia continued, her tone dropping. "The isotopic signature of this material is a flawless match for the anomalous particulate residue Octavia found in the matriarch wolf's wound. I think we may have found the source of the alien metal."
Aurelia took a slow step backward, looking at the sheer scale of the smooth surface extending deep into the rock wall in all directions. It was massive.
"It's a doorway," Aurelia breathed, the realization settling over her. "A sealed doorway."
She immediately switched her comms channel, bridging a direct line to the city.
"Commander," Aurelia's voice cut through the line, echoing with a mixture of awe and deep, unsettling dread.
"I'm here, Aurelia. Talk to me," Mark's voice replied instantly. "Did you find the lithium?"
"We breached the outer strata of the northern ridge, Commander," Aurelia reported, staring at the alien glyphs. "But we didn't hit lithium. The boring machines hit a hollow cavity roughly three hundred meters deep."
"Did you find a cave system?" Mark asked.
"Negative," Aurelia replied. "Sir... what we are looking at is perfectly symmetrical. The architecture is composed entirely of that alien alloy Octavia found. I think it may be a sealed doorway buried under a mountain. And it is definitely not naturally occurring. I believe you need to get up here right now."
