Chapter 72 - Tessa’s Tears Again

The night was quieter than usual.

Too quiet, in the way that made Jiang Yue's skin prickle, the kind of silence that felt less like peace and more like the world holding its breath before something happened.

She sat at her desk with her notebook open and her pen hovering just above the page, not quite touching it, as if she hadn't decided yet whether she wanted to bleed words onto paper or just sit there and let the quiet swallow her whole. Her phone had not stopped buzzing in the last twenty minutes, notifications stacking up, mentions piling into a small mountain of noise she didn't have the energy to climb. The pressure of it all sat behind her eyes like a headache waiting to happen.

She turned the phone face down.

"…I just want five minutes of silence," she muttered, more to herself than to anyone.

[System Alert: Emotional overload detected.]

[System Suggestion: Write.]

"…That's not a suggestion," she said softly, arching a brow at nothing in particular.

[System: It is a command.]

She exhaled slowly, the kind of breath that carried more exhaustion than it should have for someone her age.

"…Bossy."

[System: Effective.]

Her fingers tightened around the pen. And this time, unlike the dozens of times before when the words had refused to come, she didn't hesitate. Her hand moved faster than her thoughts could keep up with, ink chasing feeling across the page in long, uneven strokes.

"We were written in the same sky,

but not at the same time.

You were sunrise ,

I was the fading night,

and no matter how far we reached,

we were always just… missing.

Maybe in another life,

we would have met at the right moment.

Not too early.

Not too late.

But here, we are only two souls

learning how to love

what we can't keep."

Her hand stilled above the final line. The room seemed to hold its silence a little longer than before, and for once, even the System had nothing to say.

She hadn't heard the door. Hadn't heard footsteps. When she finally looked up, Tessa was already standing there, arms loose at her sides, eyes fixed on the notebook like it had grown teeth.

"…Yue."

Jiang Yue blinked, caught off guard. "…When did you get in?"

Tessa didn't answer right away. She crossed the room slowly, almost cautiously, and reached for the notebook before Jiang Yue could think to close it. She read it once. Then again, lips parting slightly on the second pass, as though she were trying to find a version of the words that didn't hurt as much as the first reading had.

"…You can't write things like this," she finally whispered.

Jiang Yue frowned. "Why?"

Tessa looked up, and there her eyes were unmistakable glassy with tears she hadn't let fall yet.

"…Because it sounds like goodbye."

Something in Jiang Yue's chest lurched. "It's not."

"Then why does it feel like it is?"

She didn't have an answer. She searched for one and came up with nothing but silence, and that silence was answer enough for Tessa, whose composure finally cracked. The tears spilled before she could stop them.

"H-hey... hey, why are you crying?" Jiang Yue reached for her, alarmed.

Tessa only clutched the notebook tighter to her chest, like it was something she needed to protect. "Because you always sound like you're leaving! Every single time!"

Jiang Yue froze. "I'm not leaving."

Tessa closed the distance between them and gripped her shoulders, voice cracking straight down the middle. "Promise me. Please, don't die."

The words landed harder than Jiang Yue expected, hard enough to steal the air from her lungs for a full second. Because Tessa didn't know. Didn't know how many nights Jiang Yue had come closer to that particular ending than anyone in her life realized. How many times survival had been a coin flip and not a certainty.

She forced her mouth into something like a smile. "…I'll try."

"That's not funny."

"I wasn't joking."

The silence that followed wasn't empty this time, it was full, heavy with things neither of them wanted to name out loud. Tessa pulled her into a hug instead, arms tight enough to ache.

[System Alert: Emotional bonding moment detected.]

[System Comment: This is nice. I approve.]

"…Can you not narrate my life like a reality show?" Jiang Yue mumbled into Tessa's shoulder.

[System: It's entertaining.]

"You're exhausting."

[System: You're alive.]

A pause. Then, quietly she agreed: "…Fair."

Across the city, in a studio lit for maximum drama, Liu Shanshan's livestream had just crossed peak viewership, her smile sharp enough to cut glass.

"So let's talk about this poetry prodigy," she said sweetly, letting the words sit before continuing. "Or should I say, corporate puppet?"

The comment section detonated. Speculation climbed by the second, doubt spreading through the chat like wildfire through dry grass.

She leaned into the camera, savoring it. "Because I don't believe in coincidences. Not when a CEO suddenly plucks a nobody out of obscurity and hands her global fame on a silver platter."

Back at the apartment, Jiang Yue's phone lit up again, and this time, she didn't ignore it. She picked it up, scrolled through the unfolding chaos with an expression that didn't so much as twitch.

"…Wow."

Tessa leaned over her shoulder. "What now?"

Jiang Yue turned the screen toward her. Tessa's eyes went wide.

"Oh, she did not ..."

"She did," Jiang Yue said, unbothered. "Want me to go live and drag her?"

"…Tempting."

[System Alert: Social conflict escalating.]

[System Suggestion: Strategic response recommended.]

"Or," Jiang Yue murmured, "I could just ignore it."

[System: Boring.]

Her phone buzzed once more, a message this time, not a notification storm. From him.

Zhenkai: Don't respond.

She blinked at the screen. "…He's watching?"

[System: Always.]

"That's slightly terrifying."

[System: Slightly romantic.]

"…You need help."

She exhaled, set the phone down, and picked her pen back up instead, something settling into place behind her eyes.

"If she wants a response," she said quietly, "I'll give her one."

Tessa leaned in. "What are you doing?"

Jiang Yue's smile was faint, private. "Writing."

Minutes later, a new post went live. No caption. No defense. Just verse.

"They ask what I traded for my voice,

as if truth must always come with a price.

But I was breaking long before anyone noticed,

and healing doesn't need permission.

You call it luck.

I call it survival.

And if my words frighten you,

maybe they were never meant for you at all."

The internet did not explode this time so much as it shifted, support and admiration crowding out the doubt, even the harshest critics falling quiet. She hadn't argued. Hadn't explained. Hadn't begged anyone to believe her.

She had simply spoken, and let the words do what they always did.

Later that night, Jiang Yue sat by her window again, Tessa asleep against the couch cushions beside her, the city's noise finally dimming to something bearable. Her mind, for the first time in days, was quiet.

Her phone buzzed one last time.

Zhenkai: I saw it.

She hesitated, thumb hovering, then typed: And?

The reply took a moment.

Zhenkai: You win without fighting.

Something in her chest loosened.

Jiang Yue: You're biased.

Zhenkai: Yes.

She leaned her head back against the window frame, staring up at a ceiling that offered no answers.

"…This is getting harder."

[System Status Update:]

Survival Rate: 82%

Emotional Stability: Fluctuating

Public Influence: Rising

Threat Level: Active

[System Comment: You're doing well.]

"…Doesn't feel like it."

[System: That's how growth works.]

She closed her eyes. "I just don't want to lose this."

[System: Then don't.]

A beat. "…Simple."

[System: Effective.]

Across the city, Liu Shanshan stared at the trending post until her smile finally slipped.

"…So that's how you play."

And somewhere deeper in the shadows, far from the light of either of their worlds, someone else was watching the same numbers climb, silently and patiently while calculating the next move

"…Interesting," he murmured, and said nothing more.
