Chapter 18 - Flight to Everleaf

Dalirina, Fayro, and Elinor soared high into the infinite sky, the horizon stretching wider as they approached the verdant borders of the Kingdom of Everleaf. Slowly, Fayro regained consciousness. His lashes fluttered, and confusion clouded his eyes until they settled on the vast expanse of earth far below.

"What... what is happening?" his voice trembled with sheer bewilderment. Then, he suddenly realized he was astride a dragon's back, gliding miles above the world. His chest tightened in terror, but Dalirina placed a gentle hand on his arm, her voice steady and reassuring.

"We are safe here."

But Fayro could not shake the memory of the earthquake and the flames that had devoured the ground moments before. His breath hitched as he whispered: "Was it real? That fire... the tremors I felt?"

She gazed toward the horizon, the weight of the memory heavy upon her. "It was real. And I am just as astonished as you are."

Before another word could be uttered, the whistle of ice pierced the night. A shimmering frost-arrow streaked past them. Dalirina spun around, her heart sinking at the sight—an army from the Kingdom of Ice and Wind, mounted on dragons, was descending upon them.

"Fly, Elinor—faster!"

The great white dragon answered with a thunderous roar, her massive wings beating the air with immense force. The pursuit echoed behind them, arrows falling like frozen rain. Dalirina and Fayro clung to her scales as she dove low, weaving through the sprawling greenery of the Everleaf meadows.

Finally, a towering mountain loomed ahead. With a final, desperate burst of speed, Elinor vanished behind its shadow, shielding them from view. They remained motionless, hearts pounding wildly, until the silence assured them that the soldiers had lost their trail.

Exhausted, Elinor collapsed onto the grass, her sides heaving. Dalirina knelt beside her, gently touching the dragon's scales and whispering words of gratitude. Fayro sat nearby, pale and trembling, the memories of what he had witnessed still vivid in his mind.

Night soon settled over them. They lit a small fire, its light dancing against the stone. Silence reigned for a moment before Fayro spoke in a low, hesitant voice.

"Dalirina... did you ever know about your power? Did you ever feel it within you?"

She shook her head. "No. I was never more than an ordinary person."

Fayro watched her, the firelight casting shadows across his face. "You were never ordinary. Not for a single day."

Her lips parted slightly, caught between surprise and disbelief. "Thank you, Fayro... for everything. For always standing by me, for protecting me. And... forgive me, for always dragging you into danger. I will never forget your kindness."

For a moment, his gaze lingered on her, steady and deep. Then he answered with quiet confidence:

"You are worth every sacrifice. You are brave, curious, and kind. You carry light wherever you go. Above all, you are the most wonderful soul I have ever known."

Her smile was soft, her eyes reflecting the sparkle of the stars. "And you, Fayro, are truly remarkable."

Together, they raised their eyes to the sky, where planets and stars stretched into infinity. Under that vast celestial dome, there was no need for words. The silence between them spoke louder than anything else.
