Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: The Mirror of Judgment

The sixth trial was unlike any before.

There were no blades.

No illusions.

No arenas.

Only a lake.

Still and silver, its surface perfectly flat—like a mirror holding the sky.

The final six disciples stood at its edge, watched by a sea of elders, judges, and curious onlookers. The Mirror Lake had not been used in decades, and for good reason.

It did not test skill.

It revealed truth.

---

Elder Hua raised a palm.

> "Step forward, one by one. Gaze into the Mirror of Judgment. If your will is pure, the path shall open. If not—"

He said no more.

He didn't need to.

Those who failed the mirror were said to either go mad or lose the will to cultivate forever.

---

First to step forward was Ling Yao, the silent archer.

She stared into the water for almost ten minutes.

Her hands trembled. Her lips moved soundlessly.

But then—she stepped onto the water itself, standing weightless above its surface.

A path of light formed beneath her feet.

She passed.

---

The masked disciple from Mountain Ghost Sect went next.

They stood before the water. No words. No movement.

Then, suddenly—the mask cracked, revealing nothing but a blurred face of shifting shadows.

The water rippled, then rejected them.

They fell backward, coughing black mist.

"Failed," Elder Hua said coldly.

---

Mu Qiu stepped forward.

He hesitated.

Stared.

Sweat broke across his brow. The mirror showed him his childhood in the slums, his mother dying in his arms, his desperate climb through the poison sects, the lies he told, the lives he manipulated…

But then the water shifted.

It showed him Li Fan.

The friend he had protected. The choice to stay loyal.

He smiled faintly.

The water parted.

He stepped forward.

---

Then came Yue Xin.

The mirror shimmered—showing her cold ambition, her father's death, her vow to destroy the elder council, her desire for vengeance wrapped in perfect serenity.

The lake grew icy.

But it did not crack.

She passed.

---

Then Ren Tian.

When he stepped forward, the water darkened.

It showed him countless corpses. Clans defeated. Brothers sacrificed. The Heavenly Sword Path carved in crimson.

Yet he did not flinch.

He whispered, "Strength is peace."

The water trembled—

—and let him through.

---

Last was Li Fan.

He stepped to the edge of the mirror.

Everything went silent.

The moment his reflection appeared, the crowd stirred.

Because it was not a reflection.

It was another him.

Standing atop a mountain of shattered cauldrons, bathed in lightning, eyes gold with fury. A tyrant. A savior. A monster.

The Li Fan in the mirror turned and smiled at him.

> "You cannot escape what you are becoming."

The water beneath him began to boil.

Visions surged—of countless fallen foes, of cities bowing, of the heavens breaking apart above his roar.

He stepped forward—

—and the water turned to flame.

The mirror fought back.

The Fifth Cauldron raged within.

Lightning crackled in the sky above.

Elder Hua shouted, "He's triggering a false tribulation!"

But Li Fan held it down.

He gritted his teeth, stepped once more—

And the flames vanished.

The water stilled.

The mirror was silent.

Li Fan stood atop it.

The path opened.

He passed.

But just barely.

---

As he stepped back onto the shore, Mu Qiu rushed to his side.

"You alright?!"

Li Fan's voice was hoarse. "Not yet."

Above them, thunder rumbled.

And far off, deep in the clouds, the heavens prepared.
