Chapter 44 - Chapter 43: The Breaking Tide

The dawn broke over the jagged peaks, bathing the valley below in a pale gold light. Li Fan stood atop the ridge, his robes stirring in the cold morning wind. The Seventh Cauldron within his dantian pulsed with restrained power, the kind that could shake mountains if left unchecked. He had not yet decided if he would release it. For now, his focus was on the encroaching forces gathering at the valley's edge.

The banners of the Iron Star Alliance swayed in the wind, their crimson fabric a stark warning. More than two hundred cultivators stood in formation, their leaders whispering to one another in low, clipped tones. The air between them and Li Fan was thick with mistrust. He could feel their spiritual sense brushing against him—probing, measuring, and judging.

Among the Alliance was Stuart, an old sparring companion turned wary observer. He stepped forward. "Li Fan… the world says you've become something dangerous. They call you wilden. Tell me it isn't true."

Li Fan's gaze was steady. "And if it were? Would you draw your blade?"

Stuart hesitated, his jaw tightening. "I'd fight if I had to… but I'd rather see you prove them wrong."

Around them, whispers traveled like wildfire. Some cultivators clutched their weapons tighter; others averted their eyes. Li Fan recognized the seeds of fear—fear planted carefully, cultivated by those who wanted him gone.

The ground trembled faintly beneath his feet. From the treeline emerged a group of masked figures cloaked in shadow qi. Their leader's voice carried over the distance. "Li Fan of the Nine Cauldron Hegemon Body Arts! Your path ends here. For the sake of the realm, we'll erase you before the heavens do."

Li Fan's spiritual pressure swelled, pressing against them like an unseen tide. "You think the heavens decide my fate? Then you underestimate me."

In a blur, the masked cultivators attacked. Blades sang, talismans ignited, and elemental forces clashed in an explosion of heat and frost. Li Fan's body moved like a phantom, deflecting strikes, countering with devastating force. Each step he took was calculated, each blow laced with the power of the Seventh Cauldron—but still restrained.

Above them, clouds gathered unnaturally fast, swirling in a dark spiral. Lightning flashed, followed by the distant rumble of thunder. The heavenly tribulation was sensing the stirring of his power, ready to descend at the slightest push.

The battle raged until the masked leader stood alone, his mask cracked, revealing fear-stricken eyes. "You… you really are beyond control."

Li Fan stepped closer, his voice low. "Control is not what you fear. It's freedom. Mine."

With a single palm strike, the leader was thrown back, landing hard against the ridge. The remaining cultivators hesitated, glancing at one another. No one moved to attack again.

The clouds above began to thin as Li Fan drew his qi back, letting the oppressive force dissipate. Stuart stepped forward, his eyes searching Li Fan's face. "You're walking a knife's edge, old friend."

Li Fan gave the faintest of nods. "Then I'll make sure it's my knife."

Far in the distance, unseen, the agents of the world power watched through a crystal scrying orb. "He's not ready to be taken yet," one of them murmured. "But soon… soon the tide will break."
