Chapter Twelve — The Blood That Made Me
By S.G. Grimrose
Yasha.
I used to whisper her name in prayer.
When I thought she was salvation.
Before I learned she was damnation in silk.
And now she stood before me again — tall, composed, cruel. A queen of bones wrapped in moonlight and rot.
"Still following children into the dark, Kazuki?" she said softly, tilting her head. "Did you really think you could keep them safe from me?"
Behind her, Kyouko struggled in her chains, her breathing sharp, angry.
Ren stood frozen beside me. But his hand reached for mine without thinking.
I should've pulled away.
But I didn't.
"You don't belong here anymore," I said.
Yasha chuckled. "Oh, Kazuki. You are here. And you always will be. No matter how far you run, your blood remembers me."
I felt it in my veins—the pull of her voice. Old power. The kind that doesn't let go.
Ren's hand tightened around mine. "Don't listen."
Yasha's gaze snapped to him.
"Oh," she breathed. "So this is him. The one you won't feed on. The one you dream about."
"Don't touch him," I growled.
She smiled behind the bone mask. "You used to beg me to touch you."
The blade was in my hand before I even realized I'd drawn it.
But she didn't move.
"You can strike me, Kazuki," she whispered. "But you can't change what you are."
I stepped between her and Ren.
"I already have."
She moved.
Fast.
I moved faster.
Steel met claw, and sparks lit the tunnel in flashes of red and silver. She laughed as she attacked — as if this was all a game. As if I was still her plaything.
I wasn't.
I wouldn't be.
Not ever again.
She flung me back. I slammed into stone. My ribs cracked.
Ren shouted something, but I couldn't hear it over the blood in my ears.
Yasha stalked toward him. Her eyes glowing like fire.
I forced myself up. My body screamed.
She raised her hand — claw sharp and deadly.
And then—
Kyouko broke her chains.
She swung them like a whip, catching Yasha in the throat. Blood sprayed. The vampire hissed and twisted, retreating.
Ren pulled Kyouko behind him, eyes wide. "We need to go!"
But I didn't move.
Not yet.
I stepped forward, blood running down my side.
"This ends now."
Yasha hissed, baring her fangs. "You think you're stronger because you left?"
"No," I said. "I'm stronger because I chose them."
We fought again. Feral. Brutal. Fast.
I didn't hold back.
Neither did she.
She clawed my chest open. I shattered her mask.
She dug her nails into my shoulder. I stabbed her thigh.
We were matched.
Until Ren screamed.
That broke me.
I surged forward, grabbed Yasha's throat, and slammed her into the ground.
"I am not yours."
Her lips curled. "You will always be mine."
And then—
She vanished.
Into smoke and ash and shadow.
Gone.
For now.
I collapsed.
Ren caught me.
Blood soaked his shirt, my wounds burning with fire.
"Hey—hey, stay with me," he said, voice shaking. "Kazuki—look at me."
I did.
And I saw something I didn't deserve.
Worry.
Care.
Love.
Kyouko knelt beside us. "You're bleeding out. We need to move."
I nodded weakly. "I'll live."
She raised an eyebrow. "That's a lot of blood for someone who's fine."
Ren brushed hair from my eyes. "You saved us."
I swallowed thickly. "She'll be back."
"I know," Ren whispered. "So we fight. Together."
I wanted to believe it would be enough.
But I knew Yasha.
And I knew the hidden clan.
This was only the beginning.
