Seeing the first battle already decided, in the spectator stands, Lance clapped lightly.
He turned to his uncle and said, "See? I told you he was strong. Clair is no match for him at all."
"He certainly has some skill."
The middle-aged man glanced at Natsui but didn't say much more, just a flat compliment, and then turned to leave.
As the head of the Dragon Tamer clan, he had no heart to continue watching a family member he held in high regard fight a battle she was destined to lose. He didn't want to upset himself any further.
Out of sight, out of mind, was his best choice.
On the field, seeing Clair take out her second Poké Ball, Natsui also called back Gardevoir. However, he didn't recall it, but let it watch the battle from the side.
The two once again released their Pokémon at the same time. This time, Clair sent out an Altaria, while Natsui sent out his Crystal Steelix.
As the blue lights faded, both Natsui and Clair looked at each other's Pokémon with curiosity.
Clair was, of course, admiring Crystal Steelix. Its crystal-clear form, no matter how many times she saw it, was a pleasing sight to behold.
Sigh, it's so beautiful.
If only I had a Dragon-type Pokémon like that…
And Natsui, because it was the first time he had seen an Altaria in person, couldn't help but take a few extra looks.
Altaria had a sky-blue, bird-like body, with fluffy wings that looked like cotton, covering most of its body. It looked cute and very light.
However, rather than calling it a Dragon-type Pokémon, its appearance was more like that of a bird Pokémon.
Almost instinctively, Natsui took out his Pokédex and pointed it at Altaria.
Pokédex: Beep. Altaria, the Humming Pokémon. A Dragon/Flying type. Altaria freely and leisurely flies through the sky on sunny days, blending in with the clouds. It can use its cotton-cloud-like wings to ride on updrafts and fly high into the sky. It also sings with a beautiful high-pitched voice, and its beautiful melody will mesmerize anyone who hears it, making them feel as if they are in a dream.
Interestingly, although Altaria possessed the Dragon type, because of its bird-like appearance, it, along with Druddigon and Flygon, was once jokingly called the shame of the Dragon types.
And when it Mega Evolved into Mega Altaria, its typing changed to Dragon/Fairy, opening up a path of double super-effectiveness against Dragon-types, instantly surpassing the other two on the list and becoming the traitor of the Dragon types.
He never thought that Clair, a Dragon Tamer, would make such a 'famous' Pokémon one of her aces.
However, for Natsui, this battle was actually a bit difficult.
After all, Crystal Steelix's Ground-type moves couldn't harm a Flying-type Pokémon, while conversely, Flying-type moves could deal normal damage to a Ground-type Pokémon.
This invisibly crippled one of Crystal Steelix's arms. But fortunately, even after evolving, it could still use some Rock-type moves. At the same time, it also had another typing, Steel, which could be used to fight against Altaria.
Also realizing the type issue, Clair couldn't help but smile. "In terms of typing, it seems I have the advantage."
Natsui nodded, not refuting.
If he had wanted an easier victory from the start, he could have sent out his Charizard or Gyarados and simply steamrolled her with raw power.
But Natsui chose not to do that. Instead, he used this battle to train his other Pokémon and also to improve their ability to fight in even or disadvantaged situations.
When the match began, just like Clair's resolute personality, she maintained a high offensive drive, having Altaria attack continuously, causing a lot of trouble for Crystal Steelix.
In this battle, Natsui also chose not to maneuver around Altaria with quick digs, as he had against Falkner's Pokémon. He simply had Crystal Steelix counterattack from the ground, looking for any openings Altaria might expose.
But…
Rock Tomb had no effect on Altaria.
Stone Edge was easily dodged by Altaria.
All the Rock-type moves missed.
And under Altaria's attacks, Crystal Steelix's massive body seemed clumsy, only able to defend passively.
Bang, bang, bang!
Attacks repeatedly struck Crystal Steelix's body. Fortunately, its surface was extremely hard, and Altaria didn't have any moves that were super-effective against it. Even after several successful hits, Altaria still couldn't deal much damage.
This stalemate lasted for a long time. As Altaria used Wing Attack again and charged towards Crystal Steelix, Natsui's eyes suddenly narrowed.
"Good chance! Now, use Dragon Breath!"
Crystal Steelix raised its head, and a stream of blue-green flame shot from its mouth, instantly enveloping Altaria.
"What!?"
Seeing the Dragon Breath, Clair was first greatly surprised, then belatedly shook her head.
"Sigh, that was my oversight. I rarely battle against Steelix, so I had completely forgotten that it can also use Dragon Breath."
"You can't be blamed for that," Natsui said. "After all, there are too many types of Pokémon. Besides the common ones, who can remember all their moves? Even a Pokémon Professor probably forgets sometimes."
In truth, Natsui also didn't know why Onix could use Dragon Breath after evolving into Steelix.
Perhaps the story of a snake turning into a dragon isn't just a legend.
A Pokémon that lives deep underground for so long might have absorbed a bit of dragon energy.
Coming back to his senses, Natsui refocused his attention on the field.
The surprise Dragon Breath attack had caught Altaria completely off guard and had dealt double damage, finally turning the tables a bit.
And as Altaria emerged from the Dragon Breath, most of its body was scorched. It could only return to the sky, looking at Crystal Steelix with lingering fear.
"Don't be afraid!" Clair shouted. "Just be careful! One more time, use Wing Attack!"
Hearing Clair's command, Altaria dived again, but because of a newfound wariness, its momentum was no longer as unstoppable as before.
"Crystal Steelix, use Gyro Ball!"
Crystal Steelix's massive body began to spin, faster and faster, with such force that it even made the entire gym start to shake.
Altaria couldn't stop its charge in time and crashed directly into the Gyro Ball, being thrown to the ground by the immense force.
And taking the opportunity, Natsui once again had Crystal Steelix use Iron Tail, slamming it hard onto the still-downed Altaria.
CRASH!
Hit by the massive tail, the beautiful voice that Altaria usually used for singing instantly let out a miserable cry.
