Chapter 33 - Ethan — 2nd Badge Part 2

Kurt moved fast.

"Butterfree — U-Turn! Escape through it!"

The lightning hadn't fully descended yet.

Butterfree twisted sharply, wings slicing the rain as it darted forward — not away, but through the space Flaaffy was controlling.

Electricity cracked downward.

Butterfree clipped by the edge of Thunder —

Not a full hit.

But enough to jolt it violently.

Still—

It struck Flaaffy lightly with U-Turn and rebounded backward in a flash of red light.

Kurt was already moving.

"Yanma!"

The Poké Ball snapped open mid-air.

Yanma burst out—

And immediately—

Stealth Rock activated.

Jagged stones slammed into it the moment it materialized.

Yanma winced, wings faltering for half a second.

But Tailwind was still active.

Rain was still falling.

And Speed Boost would stack.

Sabrina exhaled slowly in the stands.

"He accepted chip damage to reset positioning."

Falkner nodded.

"High tempo play."

On the field—

Pinsir finally shook free of paralysis for a clean second.

Kurt didn't waste it.

"Pinsir — Close Combat! Onix!"

Rain splashed violently as Pinsir crossed the field in a blink of motion.

Ethan didn't panic.

"Rocky — Dig."

Instantly, the massive Onix slammed downward.

The battlefield cracked—

And Rocky vanished beneath the stone just as Pinsir's Close Combat smashed into empty air.

The shockwave shattered the surface where Rocky had been.

Dust and rain mixed into muddy spray.

Pinsir's body glowed faintly—

Defense and Special Defense lowered from the failed Close Combat.

Kurt clicked his tongue.

"Underground positioning…"

Yanma buzzed faster, Speed Boost activating.

Now it was faster than everything on the field.

Ethan didn't rush.

He looked at Flaaffy calmly.

"Medium output. Power Gem. Direct hit — Pinsir."

Crystalline energy formed again—

Focused.

Sharp.

No spread this time.

The beam shot straight at the exposed Pinsir.

Defense lowered.

No protection.

Kurt reacted quickly.

"Yanma — Detect!"

Yanma shimmered briefly, shielding itself.

But Pinsir—

Took it.

Power Gem struck clean.

The impact blasted Pinsir backward across the soaked field.

It hit hard.

Tried to stand.

Its legs trembled—

Then gave out.

Pinsir fainted.

The referee's flag went up.

"Pinsir is unable to battle!"

The crowd erupted.

Whitney grabbed Lyra's arm.

"He baited the defense drop!"

Sabrina's eyes narrowed approvingly.

"He fights like he's pruning branches."

Kurt returned Pinsir slowly.

Rain still fell.

Tailwind still roared.

Yanma hovered, faster now.

But beneath the battlefield—

Rocky was still moving.

Ethan's scarf shifted in the rain as he calmly said:

"Rocky."

A beat.

"Now."

The ground under Yanma began to crack.

Because Dig doesn't just dodge.

It punishes positioning.

And Yanma—

Was directly above him.

"Rocky… now."

The ground beneath Yanma split open.

"ONIX!"

Rocky erupted upward in a violent burst of stone and mud.

Dig struck from below —

A direct hit.

Yanma had just finished its Speed Boost cycle—

No Detect this time.

The impact launched it upward before it crashed hard against the soaked battlefield.

Rain hammered down.

Yanma tried to lift its wings—

They buzzed unevenly.

It wobbled.

Bugsy raised the flag.

"Yanma is unable to battle!"

The crowd roared again.

Kurt exhaled slowly and returned Yanma.

Stealth Rock still floated on his side.

Rain still fell.

Tailwind had one turn left.

Kurt lifted the same Poké Ball as before.

"Butterfree, back to the field!"

The Poké Ball opened—

Butterfree reappeared—

And immediately—

Stealth Rock activated.

Sharp stones slammed into it mid-materialization.

Butterfree winced, wings faltering as it stabilized in the rain.

It was already chipped.

Already pressured.

But the Damp Rock still extended the storm.

Kurt didn't waste time.

"Butterfree — Hurricane!"

Rain boosted it.

Wind spiraled violently, forming a massive vortex that screamed toward Flaaffy.

This wasn't a light Air Cutter.

This was full-force.

Ethan stayed calm.

"Flaaffy — Electroweb. Wide control."

Flaaffy leapt slightly.

Electric threads burst outward in a spreading net.

The web expanded into the incoming Hurricane—

Electricity crackling through rain-soaked wind.

The vortex tore through the web—

But its force destabilized.

The Hurricane still hit—

Flaaffy was blown backward, skidding across the field.

But not launched.

Not overwhelmed.

And Butterfree—

Was now caught in the descending Electroweb strands.

Its wings struggled as electricity clung to them.

Speed dropped.

Tailwind faded.

Now the field reset.

Rain remained.

But speed control shifted.

Kurt studied Ethan carefully now.

"You don't overpower."

Ethan adjusted his scarf slightly, rain dripping from it.

"I restrict."

Rocky settled heavily beside Flaaffy.

Butterfree hovered, slower now.

Rain ticking down.

Field hazards active.

Momentum—

Firmly in Ethan's hands.

Bugsy's eyes were shining.

This wasn't reckless aggression.

This wasn't flashy dominance.

This was measured dismantling.

Rain continued pouring.

Butterfree, slowed by Electroweb but still airborne, flapped hard.

Kurt's eyes sharpened.

"You've controlled long enough."

He threw another Poké Ball.

"Heracross!"

A heavy figure landed beside Butterfree.

Not the one Kitsu faced.

This one stood differently.

Calmer.

More disciplined.

A Damp Rock hung from its neck.

Sabrina's eyes narrowed immediately.

"Double rain extension…"

Kurt didn't waste time.

"Butterfree — Rain Dance!"

The sky darkened again.

Rain intensified.

The previous rain had been ticking down—

Now it was reset.

Eight more turns.

Ethan saw it instantly.

Field reset.

And Heracross hadn't even moved yet.

Kurt's voice came sharp:

"Heracross — Aerial Ace! Flaaffy!"

Heracross vanished in a blur.

No miss.

No hesitation.

It cut cleanly through the rain and struck Flaaffy before it could reposition.

The impact was brutal.

Flaaffy was already chipped from Hurricane and Rock Slide fragments.

It hit the ground hard.

Tried to push up.

Electricity flickered weakly in its wool—

Then faded.

Bugsy's flag went up.

"Flaaffy is unable to battle!"

The crowd reacted loudly.

Whitney grabbed the railing.

"That was fast—"

Sabrina nodded quietly.

"He removed the speed control piece."

Now Rocky stood alone on the field.

Against Butterfree and a fresh Heracross.

Ethan didn't hesitate.

"Rocky — Rock Slide. Full spread."

Massive stones launched upward again—

But Kurt was ready.

"Butterfree — Counter positioning!"

Butterfree climbed higher.

"Heracross — Counter!"

Rock Slide crashed down.

Butterfree took partial damage.

Heracross braced—

Took the hit—

Then slammed its fists into the ground.

Counter activated.

The reflected physical damage surged back—

Doubled.

The backlash slammed into Rocky's massive body.

Cracks spidered across his stone segments.

The force drove him into the wet ground.

Rocky tried to rise—

Rain poured over fractured stone—

He growled—

But the damage was too much.

Bugsy raised the flag again.

"Onix is unable to battle!"

Silence hit the arena.

Two down.

Just like that.

Rain falling.

Butterfree hovering.

Heracross standing solid, Damp Rock glinting.

Kurt exhaled slowly.

"You overcommitted to physical spread."

Ethan returned Rocky calmly.

No panic.

No frustration.

Just calculation adjusting.

He reached for two Poké Balls.

The scarf shifted in the rain.

"Your field's reset," he said quietly.

"Good."

Two flashes of light burst onto the battlefield.

"Noibat. Marshtomp. Let's go."

Noibat took to the air immediately, wings slicing through rainfall.

Marshtomp landed heavily, water splashing around its feet — completely at home in the storm.

Sabrina's eyes widened slightly.

"Ground-water in rain…"

Falkner leaned forward.

"And a flier immune to ground retaliation."

Whitney whispered,

"He's not retreating."

Ethan looked across at Kurt.

"You wanted tempo."

Rain fell harder.

"Noibat — Airspace control."

"Marshtomp — anchor position."

Kurt studied them.

Water/Ground in rain.

Dragon/Flying in rain.

No obvious panic after losing two.

'He doesn't fight like Shinku…'

Shinku would've escalated.

Forced tempo.

Broken something with raw execution.

Ethan?

He absorbed impact.

Then rebuilt around it.

Kurt's eyes shifted for half a second—

And he saw her.

Behind Ethan.

Not physically.

But memory overlays are funny like that.

A girl his age back then.

Rainbow hair catching sunlight.

Laughing while adjusting field positions mid-spar.

Memory.

Kurt smirked slightly.

'Right… Shinku married her.'

That explained it.

'He fights like his mother.'

Calm under pressure.

Resets momentum instead of chasing it.

The rain intensified.

Kurt raised his hand.

"Butterfree — Hurricane! Noibat!"

Storm-boosted wind spiraled violently toward the airborne dragon.

Simultaneously—

"Heracross — Bug Bite! Marshtomp!"

Heracross lunged low through the rain, targeting the grounded threat.

Ethan moved immediately.

"Noibat — Dragon Rush. Break through it!"

Noibat shrieked.

Draconic energy wrapped around his body as he launched forward into the Hurricane instead of dodging it.

The vortex tore at him—

But Dragon Rush punched through the center of the wind column.

Butterfree didn't expect the direct breach.

The impact slammed into it mid-air.

Butterfree spun violently, wings destabilized.

Not fainted—

But heavily damaged.

On the ground—

"Marshtomp — Mud Shot. Direct."

Marshtomp stomped forward and launched a thick blast of muddy slurry straight into Heracross's charge path.

Heracross pushed through it—

Bug Bite connected.

Sharp mandibles struck Marshtomp's shoulder.

But the Mud Shot hit clean.

Speed dropped.

Rain made the mud heavier.

Movement became harder.

Marshtomp slid back from the hit, teeth grit—

But stayed standing.

Torrent hadn't activated yet—

But he was getting close.

Bugsy leaned forward.

"This is escalating…"

Sabrina nodded softly.

"He's using the rain differently."

Noibat circled back, wings strained but steady.

Butterfree struggled to regain clean air control.

Heracross shook mud from its legs, Damp Rock glinting.

Rain ticking.

Field reset.

Four Pokémon active.

Momentum no longer one-sided.

Kurt smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Now this felt like a real battle.

He raised his voice.

"Heracross — Aerial Ace! Finish Marshtomp!"

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

Because that—

That was a real threat.

And this time—

He couldn't afford to trade poorly.

Meanwhile — in the stands.

Rain blurred the battlefield below, the clash of wind and mud echoing upward.

Lyra gripped the railing.

"Is… Ethan gonna win?"

Sabrina didn't look away from the field.

"Forty percent."

Lyra blinked. "I don't like those odds."

Erika folded her arms but her tone stayed calm.

"Have more faith in him."

Whitney nodded quickly.

"Yeah. He's got this."

Falkner glanced sideways at Sabrina.

"It's a bit rude to think he'll lose."

Sabrina finally adjusted her glasses.

"Losing."

Everyone paused.

She continued evenly:

"Forty percent chance of losing."

A beat.

"Sixty percent chance of winning."

Whitney let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"That's better!"

Lyra blinked. "You could've started with that."

Sabrina didn't react.

"He is statistically behind in momentum but ahead in adaptability."

Falkner smirked faintly.

"That's the most Sabrina way to say 'he's on fire.'"

Erika's eyes never left Ethan.

"He doesn't chase wins."

Down below, Marshtomp braced as Heracross closed in.

Noibat wheeled back into position.

Sabrina spoke softly now, almost to herself.

"He absorbs storms."

Rain continued to fall.

"And then," she finished quietly, "he decides when they end."

Heracross blurred forward.

"Aerial Ace! Finish Marshtomp!"

Rain split around its charge.

And Ethan—

Crossed his arms.

Calm.

"Marshtomp. Close your ears."

Marshtomp immediately clamped his finned ears down tight.

The crowd blinked in confusion.

Then—

"Noibat."

His voice didn't rise.

But the command cut clean.

"Max power. Wide-area. Supersonic."

Noibat's wings snapped wide.

For half a heartbeat—

Silence.

Then—

A piercing ultrasonic scream exploded across the battlefield.

Not a narrow pulse.

Not a single target.

A shockwave of distorted sound rippled outward in expanding rings.

The rain itself vibrated.

Water shattered midair into mist.

Heracross stumbled mid-dash.

Butterfree's wings faltered violently.

Bugsy flinched, grabbing his ears too late.

In the stands—

Everyone panicked.

Whitney yelped and covered her ears.

Lyra ducked.

Falkner winced hard.

Even Sabrina's glasses rattled slightly as she shielded herself.

Erika reacted instantly, hands over her ears as she stepped back.

The ultrasonic field distorted everything.

Heracross veered off trajectory, Aerial Ace breaking formation.

Butterfree spiraled, unable to stabilize in the vibrating air.

Confusion rolled over both of Kurt's Pokémon at once.

Not guaranteed.

But amplified.

Wide-area.

Max output.

Ethan stood still in the middle of the storm, scarf whipping violently.

He wasn't protecting himself.

He was enduring it.

The sound faded slowly—

Rain resumed its normal rhythm.

Heracross staggered.

Butterfree wobbled midair.

Both blinking—

Disoriented.

Bugsy steadied himself, lowering one hand carefully.

"That… was legal."

Kurt exhaled through his nose.

Risky.

Wide confusion in rain.

But Supersonic wasn't about damage.

It was about breaking structure.

And structure—

Was exactly what Kurt had built this rain team on.

Ethan lowered his arms slowly.

"Noibat. Pull back."

Marshtomp reopened his ears.

The battlefield had changed.

Not through force.

Through disruption.

And now—

Confusion could flip everything.

The rain kept falling — steady, relentless.

Heracross blinked hard.

The world wouldn't stabilize.

One Noibat became three.

Three became six.

Marshtomp split into shifting silhouettes across the soaked ground.

Butterfree spiraled slightly, compound eyes flickering as the battlefield fractured into overlapping afterimages.

Kurt's voice cut through the rain.

"Heracross — steady! Focus! Aerial Ace!"

But Heracross's ears were still ringing.

The ultrasonic distortion hadn't fully faded.

It lunged anyway.

Aerial Ace activated — body moving on trained instinct rather than sight.

It dashed toward the nearest Noibat—

But the image warped at the last second.

Heracross overcorrected.

Its wing arm slashed—

And instead of slicing air—

It smashed directly into the ground at full force.

The impact cracked the battlefield.

Heracross recoiled violently, staggering backward.

Bugsy raised his flag halfway, confirming aloud:

"Heracross hurt itself in confusion!"

A ripple went through the crowd.

Whitney peeked through her fingers.

"Ohhh that hurt."

Sabrina's voice was steady again.

"Max-output Supersonic in rain increases sound travel efficiency."

Falkner glanced at her.

"You're enjoying this."

"I appreciate efficiency."

Above the field—

Butterfree attempted to regain balance—

But its wings fluttered unevenly.

Confusion still active.

Kurt narrowed his eyes.

He didn't panic.

But this—

This was dangerous.

Ethan didn't rush in wildly.

He didn't capitalize instantly.

He assessed.

Heracross: chipped, confused, speed reduced.

Butterfree: injured, confused, rain still active.

He gave his next command calmly.

"Marshtomp — Rock Slide."

Ground advantage.

Wide pressure.

"Noibat — hold altitude."

Not greedy.

Not reckless.

Just tightening the vice.

Marshtomp slammed both arms into the soaked battlefield.

Stones erupted upward in a wide arc.

Heracross, still disoriented, reacted too late.

Butterfree tried to climb—

But confusion made its ascent uneven.

The rocks came down hard.

Heracross took the brunt.

Butterfree was struck mid-wing.

Both were forced back.

Rain hammered against bruised bodies.

Kurt watched carefully.

He doesn't snowball.

He constricts.

Heracross shook its head violently, trying to clear the distortion.

Butterfree trembled midair.

Confusion wouldn't last forever.

Rain wouldn't last forever.

But momentum?

That was shifting.

And Ethan—

Was the one holding it now.
