The fire in the fireplace flickered softly, casting long, dancing shadows across the charcoal-gray walls of the room. The room was warm, a stark contrast to the biting autumn chill outside and the metallic scent of blood that lingered in Akaza's memory.
Rumi sat on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, her posture uncharacteristically rigid. She wasn't tensed for a fight; she was frozen in an effort to be perfectly silent. Her eyes, wide and sparkling, were fixed on the scene before her. Her hands were clamped over her mouth, stifling a squeal that was threatening to burst her lungs.
In the center of the bed, Akaza sat cross-legged. And curled up in his arms, tiny and fragile against his black shirt, was Eri.
The little girl was fast asleep. Her small hand was clutching the fabric of Akaza's shirt hard, even in her sleep.
Rumi stared. She looked at the girl's pale, messy hair, the small horn on her forehead, and the way she seemed to seek Akaza's warmth instinctively.
'SHE IS SOOO CUTE!' Rumi mouthed silently, her face turning red from the effort of holding it in. She did a little shimmy of excitement, her rabbit ears twitching wildly.
Akaza looked up at her, catching the silent fangirling. A small smile touched his lips, softening the sharp angles of his face. He looked down at Eri, his expression shifting from amusement to a deep sense of protective tenderness. He adjusted his hold, ensuring she was comfortable, before slowly moving to lay her down on the bed.
He moved slowly, trying to transfer her weight to the mattress without waking her. He almost succeeded.
Just as he began to pull his hand away, he felt a tug.
Eri's eyes weren't open, but her hand had shot out, her tiny fingers wrapping around his index finger with the little strength she had. Her brow furrowed, a whimper escaping her throat.
"You… will not leave me… right?" she murmured, her voice thick with sleep and a lingering, deep-seated fear.
Akaza froze. He looked at the small hand holding onto him. He leaned down, bringing his face close to hers.
"No," he promised. "I'm not leaving. I'll be right back. I have to talk to the principal. You're safe here."
Eri's eyes fluttered open for a fraction of a second, revealing those deep red pools. She saw him. She saw the shadow who had kept his word. She gave a tiny, sleepy nod, her lips curving into a smile — the sweetest, most heartbreaking thing Akaza had ever seen — before her eyes closed again and she drifted back into a safe, dreamless sleep.
Akaza slowly extracted his finger. He stood up and turned around, only to find Rumi face down on the rug.
"Rumi?"
She didn't move. "I'm dead," she mumbled into the carpet. "Cuteness overload. Tell my parents I loved them."
Akaza chuckled. He walked over and nudged her gently with his foot. "Get up, you dramatic rabbit. I have to go report to Nezu. Watch her for me?"
Rumi sprang up, dusting herself off. "With my life, Aki. Go. I've got this."
He nodded, gave her a quick kiss on the forehead, and slipped out of the room, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.
The walk to the principal's office was quiet. The halls of U.A. were empty, the students in class or training.
Soon, he entered Nezu's office without knocking. The principal was sitting at his desk, a pot of tea steaming in front of him. He looked up as Akaza entered, his beady eyes sharp and knowing.
"Good work, Asura," Nezu said, pouring a second cup. "The heroes have secured the facility. The evidence is overwhelming. Overhaul remains… alive, I hear. Barely."
Akaza took the cup, ignoring the chair, and leaned against the wall. "He'll live. He will live in pain throughout his life."
"Tell me," Nezu asked, his tone shifting to professional curiosity. "How did it go? The report mentions… extensive damage to the facility's infrastructure."
Akaza took a sip of tea. His eyes glazed over slightly as the memory of the morning's violence washed over him.
FLASHBACK
The moment Akaza stepped into the underground labyrinth, he didn't run.
He flowed.
He moved like a shadow. The first line of defense, a group of low-level Yakuza thugs with guns, didn't even see him.
Shock Pulse: Soru
He moved between them, his gauntleted fists connecting with jaws, ribs, and solar plexus with surgical precision. They dropped like puppets with their strings cut, dead before they hit the floor.
Then came the Eight Bullets.
Rikiya Katsukame, the vitality-stealing giant, burst through a wall, roaring. Akaza didn't dodge. He met the charge.
Destructive Death: Air Type
He fired a compressed blast of air point-blank into the giant's throat. The impact didn't just stop him; it collapsed his windpipe and sent shockwaves rippling through his massive body. Rikiya fell, gasping, his eyes rolling back.
Toya Setsuno tried to use his theft quirk to steal Akaza's gauntlets. Akaza simply moved faster than the thief's eyes could track. He grabbed Setsuno by the face, slammed him into the ceiling, and used the villain's own knives to pin him to the concrete, leaving him dead.
Yu Hojo, the crystal armor user, thought he was invincible. He hardened his body into diamonds. Akaza didn't bother with a technique. He just punched. His fist, vibrating with Internal Kinetic Reinforcement, hit the crystal. The vibrations shattered the structure instantly, turning the invincible armor into a cloud of glittering dust and reducing Hojo to a broken, bleeding mess on the floor.
It was a slaughter. A systematic dismantling of the organization's elite.
And then, the final door.
Akaza kicked it open. Inside, Kai Chisaki stood over a table, dismantling a prototype drug. Next to him was his right-hand man, Chronostasis, and a small, twitchy man holding a gun. Nemoto.
"You…" Chisaki narrowed his eyes. "A hero? You're early."
"I'm not a hero today," Akaza said, walking forward.
Nemoto panicked. He raised his gun, loaded with a red-fletched dart.
"Die!"
He fired.
Akaza saw it coming. He could have dodged. But he didn't. He let the dart hit his shoulder.
Thwip.
The drug was injected.
Chisaki started to laugh. "You fool. That was a quirk-destroying bullet. You're finished. You're nothing but a-"
His laughter died in his throat.
Above Akaza's head, a golden, spectral wheel materialized. It spun with a heavy, metallic clack.
CLINK
Akaza felt his quirk vanish for exactly one second. And then, the wheel spun, and his body rejected the erasure. His quirk roared back to life, stronger, angrier, immune.
Akaza raised a hand. "Was that it?"
He flicked his fingers. A blade of shockwave sliced through the air, severing the gun in Nemoto's hand and continuing to strike the man in the chest, cutting through his ribcage. Nemoto fell, dead.
Chisaki's eyes widened. "Impossible…"
He slammed his hands on the floor. The concrete exploded into massive spikes, rushing toward Akaza.
Akaza walked through them. He used Disorder, his fists a blur, shattering the stone constructs as fast as Chisaki could create them. He closed the distance.
"Don't touch me!" Chisaki screamed, lashing out. His hand, glowing with the power of Overhaul, connected with Akaza's chest.
Deconstruct.
Akaza felt his skin ripple. It was a disgusting sensation, like his cells were boiling. His flesh began to wobble, losing cohesion, threatening to burst apart into a gory mess.
CLINK
The wheel spun again.
The wobbling stopped instantly. Akaza's body solidified. His biology adapted to the restructuring frequency, neutralizing it. He was immutable.
Chisaki stared at his hand, then at Akaza's chest, his mind breaking. "No… no… what are you?!"
"I'm the end of your little empire," Akaza whispered.
He grabbed Chisaki's outstretched arm.
CRUNCH.
He broke it. Frying every single nerve in his arm.
"AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Then the other.
"S..STOP!!"
He beat the villain down with a brutal, methodical efficiency, breaking bone after bone, dismantling the man who loved to dismantle others.
"I..I BeGG yyOu, PleAs..."
When Chisaki was a weeping, broken heap on the floor, Akaza dragged him to the wall.
He picked up the jagged shards of concrete Chisaki had created.
He then nailed him to the wall, using the pieces of concrete he had used to attack Akaza.
Leaving the broken villain moaning in agony, Akaza turned to the heavy steel door at the back of the lab.
He tore the door off its hinges.
The room was dark, filled with toys that looked untouched. In the farthest corner, huddled under a bed, was a small, trembling thing.
Eri had heard the fighting. The screams. The terrifying sounds of Overhaul pleading. She thought it was a punishment. She thought she was next.
She squeezed her eyes shut, covering her ears, waiting for the pain.
Waiting for the needles.
Creak.
Footsteps. Slow. Soft.
It's over, she thought, her heart numb. He's going to take me apart again.
"Eri."
The voice wasn't Chisaki's. It wasn't Chrono's. It was low and gentle.
She slowly opened her eyes. She turned her head.
Standing in the doorway, backlit by the harsh lab lights, was a figure in black. But he wasn't scary. He had knelt, making himself small, his body covered in blood. He then lowered his hood.
She recognized him. The shadow on the roof. The one who had mouthed the words.
I will save you.
Tears began to roll down her cheeks. She crawled out from under the bed, her limbs shaking so hard she could barely move.
"Are… are you here… to save me?" she whispered, her voice breaking.
Akaza smiled. It wasn't the terrifying grin he had given Chisaki. It was warm. It was safe. He opened his arms wide.
"Yes."
Eri ran. She threw herself into his arms, burying her face in his chest, her small hands clutching his costume. And she screamed. She cried out years of pain, of fear, of loneliness.
"Thank you!" she sobbed, over and over again. "Thank you! Please don't leave me! Please don't let him take me back!"
Akaza wrapped his arms around her, shielding her from the sight of the blood in the other room.
"I won't," he promised, his voice fierce and absolute. "I will never leave you. You're safe now."
FLASHBACK END
Akaza stared into his teacup, the ripples settling. "She's safe. That's what matters."
Nezu nodded slowly, his expression serious. "Indeed. A successful extraction. And… quite the message you left for the underworld. The photos from the scene will circulate. They will know that heroes have fangs."
"And Eri?" Akaza asked, looking up.
"As per her wishes, and given her unstable quirk and extreme trauma, she will remain at U.A. for the foreseeable future," Nezu said, a kind smile returning to his face. "She trusts only you. Therefore, she will be staying in your quarters at Heights Alliance. I trust you and Ms. Usagiyama can handle the responsibility?"
"We can," Akaza said instantly.
"Good. Recovery Girl will monitor her health, and Aizawa will begin training to help her control her quirk once she is stable."
Akaza set the cup down. "What about the heroes? Nighteye? The police? They saw the scene. They would see Eri here and understand who did it."
Nezu's smile widened, sharp and cunning. "Leave that to me, Asura. The official report will state that the villains turned on each other in a power struggle, or perhaps that a rogue vigilante element intervened before the heroes arrived. The heroes… they are pragmatic. They saw the result. They saw the girl saved. They will ask no questions because they do not want the answers. As for how Eri got here? Simple, the gentleman left her in our care."
He hopped down from his chair.
"Go back to the dorms, Akaza. Go be with your family."
Akaza nodded. He turned and walked out of the office, heading back to the sanctuary where a white rabbit and a little girl were waiting for him.
The war was far from over. The League was still out there. All For One's shadow still loomed. But for tonight… for tonight, they had won.
