MHGA Chapter 318: Elder Dragon-Level Turf War!
If it had been Shin or Tanjiro who saw that relatively small-bodied Fanged Beast challenging the massive monster in the sky, they might have been confused.
But if it were Kairo Retsu—or Laios, who had already read most of the monster data—standing here, they would have recognized the true identity of that Fanged Beast...
The Rajang—King of the Fanged Beasts, undisputed monarch among its kind.
In a world dominated by wyverns and dragons, Fanged Beasts are generally much weaker in overall strength. Yet among them, the Rajang is renowned for its destructive power and mystery, standing shoulder to shoulder with Elder Dragons… Its unique transformation form and battle-crazed nature fully justify its title as the King of the Fanged Beasts.
"ROOOOOAAAAAARRRR!!"
At that moment, the Rajang standing atop the tree let out a defiant roar toward the hovering Nergigante in the sky. Its pitch-black fur and size—small compared to most dragon species—made it appear like a black-furred ape with oversized horns.
But… up close, one could see its bulging biceps and swollen deltoids twitching from provocation.
Rajang… is a creature whose appearance and combat ability are comically mismatched.
Compared to its desire to hunt, what drives it more is the lust for battle.
Rajangs are nomadic—they have no fixed territory, appearing in all sorts of regions solely to fight and hunt. They boast extraordinary environmental adaptability, thriving in both volcanic and snowy biomes.
And now, this Rajang was provoking the circling Nergigante.
The Elder Dragon also sensed the provocation. After a brief spiral through the low air, it suddenly dove straight at the Rajang.
Like a meteor streaking from the heavens, it plummeted with devastating force.
But this display of violence didn't frighten the Rajang. On the contrary, it roared even louder, electric arcs of golden lightning dancing across its mane. The electricity surged through its body, causing its fur to stand and glow bright gold.
"ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRR!!"
Facing the oncoming Nergigante, the Rajang showed no sign of retreat. As the Elder Dragon slammed down with celestial force, the Rajang responded by launching itself forward with its immense muscle power.
The two collided.
A shockwave visibly rippled through the air from the impact—an explosion of force from this primal clash between Elder Dragon and Fanged Beast King.
Ultimately, however, the larger Nergigante—with its mass and gravitational advantage—won the contest of brute force, slamming the Rajang into one of the forest's ancient trees.
That towering tree—who knows how many years it had stood—was shattered by the impact of Nergigante slamming the Rajang into it, and the two beasts tumbled downward along with the tree crown into the forest.
Roaring, Nergigante raised its claws and slammed them sideways, sending the Rajang flying once more. Its black spines stood tall in rage as it bellowed again.
Despite having taken a dive and a slap, the Rajang didn't yield.
It immediately grabbed the broken treetop and hurled it back at Nergigante with brute force.
The Elder Dragon snarled, its wings unfurling wide. Its black spikes glimmered like metal under the light.
With a snapping contraction of muscle, the wing-mounted spines launched in a barrage—slicing the air as they shot forth. They pierced the incoming tree trunk like missiles. The massive trunk exploded into fragments upon impact, wood chips scattering with the shockwave. Even before the debris could touch the ground, a new layer of black spines had already regrown—forming a fresh armor shell around Nergigante's body.
The Rajang slammed its fists into the ground, its rear legs coiling like springs before kicking off a giant tree behind it.
The tree cracked with a thunderous snap, and the Rajang—now a golden blur—hurtled toward Nergigante.
The Elder Dragon reared up and raised its right claw high. At the very moment the Rajang closed in, Nergigante brought its claw crashing down—smashing directly into the Fanged Beast. The forearm spikes burst forth, many of them stabbing deep into the Rajang's flesh.
Rajang's frontal assault failed, but it didn't retreat.
Golden light surged across its body. Red battle aura coiled around its brawny arms, and almost tangible lightning blasted from its mouth—striking Nergigante square in the head.
Staggering slightly from the headshot, Nergigante reeled back—granting the Rajang a brief window.
The Fanged Beast burst free from the Elder Dragon's grasp and delivered a fierce uppercut to its chin.
The impact sent Nergigante's massive body upward, shattering several white spines from its jaw. But in a flash, new black spikes had grown in, covering its cheeks once again.
Enraged, Nergigante retaliated with another backhand—sending the Rajang crashing away once more.
"ROOOOOAAAAARR!!" Rajang howled defiantly, still refusing to back down.
And Nergigante's answer?
With a furious roar, it spread its wings and soared nearly ten meters into the air… before diving toward Rajang in a brutal body slam.
Ruinous Rampage Spiral – Heaven!
A storm of black spikes exploded outward in every direction, obliterating surrounding trees. Even the Rajang was wracked with pain from the hit and finally decided to retreat.
As it fled, the Rajang hurled splintered trunks and boulders behind it, trying to slow Nergigante's pursuit.
While shoving aside felled trees and brushing past bushes in its escape, the Rajang suddenly grabbed something.
From the thicket, its massive hand yanked out a bipedal ape-dragon wearing a leafy camouflage cloak—face frozen in an awkward, sheepish smile.
"Ehehe... can we maybe talk this out?"
Without a shred of hesitation, Rajang hurled the bipedal creature backward toward the pursuing Elder Dragon—then sprinted off into the depths of the forest, still bristling with embedded spines.
The unfortunate soul that Rajang had randomly grabbed and thrown was none other than Kairo Retsu.
Twisting mid-air in an acrobatic tumble, he crashed into the ground in front of the charging Nergigante.
Picking himself up with a wry expression, he looked up—only to freeze.
That Nergigante… looked strangely familiar.
And suddenly, he remembered.
He'd seen it twice before.
The first time, Nergigante had obliterated his base camp with a single slap.
The second time, Nergigante had helped them by eliminating the demonized Laios…
"Uh… h-hi there?"
Kairo Retsu offered an awkward smile.
"Have… have you eaten yet?"
