Soldiers moved toward Milton for slandering their general, and Sylene looked furious too—and embarrassed. Sir Melchior had been so kind, and Milton slandering him like that? He was the evil one, not Sir Melchior. Sylene also wanted to move from behind the cape when the vampire general signaled the soldiers to wait.
Milton complained, "Why should I face being stripped of my rank for this hybrid, and then—"
Sylene lifted his head from behind Melchior's cape—and their gazes met.
