The high, sharp shriek of the buzzer marked the official end of the third quarter, cutting cleanly through the roaring noise inside the Barangay Burol II covered court.
Ten minutes of brutal, physical, and relentless basketball had just passed on the floorboards, leaving both teams breathless. The glowing digital scoreboard mounted on the concrete wall displayed the fruit of their hard work:
BLACK MAMBAS: 39
BLUE WHALES: 37
Holding a tight two-point lead, the ten players of the Black Mambas walked toward their bench. Their black jerseys were completely soaked through with sweat, clinging heavily to their tired shoulders. Their legs felt like lead, and their lungs burned for air, but a fierce, unquenchable fire shone brightly in their eyes.
Tristan Herrera sat down on his wooden folding chair, draping a white towel around his neck. He leaned his back against the chair, staring down at the floorboards while taking slow, deep, controlled breaths. His physical body was tired, but inside his mind, his Floor General system interface was active, keeping his thoughts sharp and crystal clear.
He opened his internal status menu to check his current condition:
Name: Tristan Herrera
Title: Floor General (In-Training)
Speed: 35
Agility: 30
Stamina: 28 / 100 (Warning: Low Stamina)
Equipped Badges: Acrobat (Bronze)
Active Skills: Floor General (Level 1)
Current Mission: Mission 5 — Qualify for the Next Round (Win at least 2 games in the league stage or face System Deletion).
Tristan stared at his stamina bar. The constant pressure of guarding Diego Paterno and running their fast-break offense had drained his energy down into the red danger zone.
He knew that if they held on and won this final ten-minute quarter, their group stage record would reach two wins and zero losses. That victory would complete Mission 5, permanently erase the threat of System Deletion, and officially lock in their spot in the playoff knockout rounds.
High up on the concrete bleachers, Coach Gutierrez was sitting in his dark blue polo shirt, watching the Black Mambas' bench closely. The veteran high school coach held his black clipboard on his lap, taking careful notes on Tristan's leadership under pressure.
Furthermore, Tristan remembered his upcoming Sunday afternoon study group with Christine near the town library. To prove he was a true student-athlete worthy of trying out for the Dasmariñas National High School varsity team in March, he needed to win this game right now.
Marco flopped down onto a stool nearby, breathing heavily while wiping sweat from his face. "Man, that third quarter was absolute madness," Marco muttered, his voice tight. "They are so tough under the basket. Every single layup feels like running into a brick wall."
Gab, resting his hands on his knees while catching his breath, shook his head slowly. "They're extremely good," Gab said calmly, his tone firm and resolute. "Diego Paterno isn't backing down at all. But notice how their big men are starting to run slower. They're getting tired, too. We just have to stay disciplined and outwork them in these final ten minutes."
Mark paced back and forth near the bench, tapping his fingers nervously against his thigh. "They're pressing us heavily on defense. We need to create chaos, use our speed, slow down their fast breaks, and catch their defenders flat-footed."
Tristan took a deep breath and stood up, pulling his team into a tight, focused circle. He looked into the eyes of all nine brothers. His voice was steady, calm, and authoritative, carrying the natural weight of a true captain.
"Listen to me, Mambas," Tristan said, his clear words cutting through the loud chatter of the crowd. "We saw who they are in that third quarter: fast, powerful, relying on Diego, and playing a defense that punishes every small mistake. But we also proved that we can take their best punches and keep fighting back."
He locked eyes with Mark, Marco, Gab, and Felix one by one.
"Now, it's about taking complete control of this game, not just reacting to what they do. Mark, keep pushing their defense apart. Use your streetball speed to force their perimeter guards out of position. Marco, your cuts and baseline driving lanes are the key to breaking their pressure. Gab and Felix, double-team Diego whenever he catches the ball below the elbow, but be ready to rotate back quickly. Communicate loudly on every single play."
A unified murmur of agreement rippled through the group.
"We are going to play smart, patient basketball," Tristan continued. "Keep the ball moving. No reckless, forced shots. Be patient, but attack aggressively the second an opening appears. This is our court, our team, and our game!"
Joseph, who had been sitting quietly on the bench, stood up and nodded firmly. "Time to finish this and show them what the Black Mambas are made of!"
All ten players stacked their hands together in the center of the huddle.
"MAMBAS ON THREE!" Marco shouted.
"ONE! TWO! THREE! MAMBAS!" they all yelled in unison, their loud shout echoing across the covered gym!
TRRRRIIILLLL!
The referee's sharp, silver whistle blew loudly, signaling the start of the fourth and final quarter!
"Ladies and gentlemen of Dasmariñas!" the court announcer's voice boomed through the giant black speakers. "Get ready for the final ten minutes of play! Black Mambas holding a narrow two-point lead over the undefeated Blue Whales!"
The Black Mambas took the floorboards with a sharp, versatile lineup: Mark at point guard, Marco at shooting guard, Joseph at small forward, Gab at power forward, and Felix at center. Tristan sat on the bench for the opening two minutes to conserve his remaining 28 percent stamina for the final, crucial stretch.
The Black Mambas had the first possession of the quarter. Mark brought the ball across half-court with deliberate, rhythmic calm, his dark eyes scanning the Blue Whales' defense for weaknesses.
The Blue Whales pressed aggressively man-to-man, but the Black Mambas adjusted smoothly. They spaced out across the court, moving fluidly without the ball and cutting sharply off screens.
Mark executed a lightning-fast crossover dribble to his left, drawing two perimeter defenders toward him near the top of the key. Spotting Marco wide open on the right wing, Mark delivered a crisp, single-handed bounce pass!
BOUNCE!
Marco caught the pass cleanly in his shooting pocket. He hesitated for a brief split-second, reading the closing defender, then smoothly elevated into a clean jump shot from behind the three-point line!
The basketball arced high through the warm air of the gym and swished perfectly through the cotton net!
SWISH!
Black Mambas: 42
Blue Whales: 37
"THREE-POINTER! NUMBER EIGHT, MARCO!" the court announcer screamed into his microphone! "WHAT A START TO THE FOURTH QUARTER!"
The small section of Black Mambas fans on the bleachers erupted into wild cheers, stomping their feet on the concrete stands!
The Blue Whales regained the ball immediately. Their point guard darted past half-court, shouting out a set play while waving his left hand. Diego Paterno cut hard into the painted key, looking to post up near the rim.
However, Gab and Felix had learned their lesson. The second Diego received the entry pass, Gab and Felix executed a rapid double-close defense, trapping Diego with four outstretched arms!
Under heavy physical pressure, Diego forced a contested hook shot. The ball clanged loudly off the back of the iron rim and bounced high into the air!
Gab leaped up, snatched the defensive rebound with both hands, and immediately looked upcourt!
"FAST BREAK!" Gab yelled!
Mark exploded down the court like a rocket, his eyes bright with opportunity! Spotting Tristan, who had just checked back into the game at small forward, running down the middle lane, Mark fired a long, high lob pass toward the basket!
Tristan sprinted forward, timing his jump to perfection. Rising high into the air, Tristan caught the flying ball mid-air with both hands, gathered his body with tight power, and slammed a thunderous, two-handed dunk through the rim!
BANG!
Black Mambas: 44
Blue Whales: 37
The entire covered court exploded into a deafening, wild roar! The noise was so loud that the metal roof rafters seemed to vibrate!
"OH MY GOODNESS! AN ALLEY-OOP DUNK BY TRISTAN HERRERA!" the announcer screamed at the top of his lungs!
The Blue Whales responded like true champions. They did not break under the pressure.
Their point guard brought the ball down quickly, executed a fast drive-and-kick play, and passed to their shooting guard on the wing. The guard launched a fast three-pointer that swished cleanly through the net before any defender could jump to contest it!
Black Mambas: 44
Blue Whales: 40
Mark took control of the ball once again for the Black Mambas. His unpredictable, streetball handle unsettled the defense as he twisted between two defenders near the elbow. Spotting Joseph cutting hard toward the basket, Mark delivered a slick, no-look pass into the lane!
Joseph caught the ball in stride and leaped toward the rim for a layup! The Blue Whales' center jumped into him illegally, sending Joseph to the floor while the referee blew his whistle sharply!
TRRRRIIILLLL!
"DEFENSIVE FOUL ON BLUE NUMBER FORTY-FOUR! TWO FREE THROWS!" the referee signaled.
Joseph stood up, dusted off his knees, and walked calmly to the free-throw line. Under intense pressure, Joseph sank both free throws with textbook form!
Black Mambas: 46
Blue Whales: 40
The White Sharks and Blue Whales bench players shouted words of encouragement to their team, urging them to fight back. Feeling the immense pressure of falling behind by six points, the Blue Whales intensified their defensive traps.
Possessions became incredibly physical and scrappy. Diego Paterno relentlessly attacked the basket, driving hard through body contact and drawing personal fouls. Stepping to the line, Diego calmly sank two free throws, closing the gap back down:
Black Mambas: 46
Blue Whales: 42
Despite the heavy physical pressure, the Black Mambas showcased their growing composure and mental toughness. Guided by Tristan's Floor General vision, their ball movement remained smart, crisp, and disciplined. They didn't rush bad shots; they used the shot clock wisely and passed to the open man.
With four minutes left on the game clock, Marco executed a sharp baseline sprint, received a perfectly timed pass from Mark, and scored a soaring, floating layup despite a defender jumping right beside him!
Black Mambas: 48
Blue Whales: 42
The Blue Whales refused to yield an inch of ground. Their point guard threaded a sharp, laser pass to their small forward, who stepped up and landed a smooth pull-up jumper from fifteen feet out.
Black Mambas: 48
Blue Whales: 44
With only two minutes remaining on the digital game clock, heavy fatigue settled over every single player on the floor. Sweat dripped continuously onto the court, and their breaths came in heavy, loud gasps. The game had turned into a pure battle of wills.
The Black Mambas ran a structured set play called by Tristan: Mark at the top of the key, Joseph and Marco flanking the wings, and Tristan cutting through the lane to draw attention.
Mark dribbled to his left, fake-driving into the paint, before snapping a sharp pass to Marco cutting toward the basket. As two Blue Whales defenders lunged inward to block Marco's layup, Marco smartly kicked the ball out to Mark, who had trailed behind the three-point line!
Mark caught the ball cleanly. His feet were set, and his eyes were locked onto the rim.
"RICE AND FISH!" Mark shouted playfully as he released the three-pointer!
The orange ball arced smoothly through the warm gym air while the entire crowd held its breath...
SWISH!
Black Mambas: 51
Blue Whales: 44
"THREE-POINTER! MARK AT THE CLUTCH!" the court announcer screamed! "A SEVEN-POINT LEAD FOR THE BLACK MAMBAS WITH 1:15 REMAINING!"
The Black Mambas bench exploded in pure joy! Mark grinned widely, running back on defense while flexing his arms to the cheering crowd!
Desperate to survive, the Blue Whales fought back with everything they had left. Diego Paterno caught the ball in the post, powered through body contact from Gab and Felix, and scored a hard-fought, tough bank layup with fifty seconds left!
Black Mambas: 51
Blue Whales: 46
The Blue Whales immediately committed an intentional foul on Tristan to stop the game clock with thirty seconds remaining!
Tristan stepped up to the free-throw line. His stamina bar was blinking red at 12 percent, and his body was shaking from exhaustion.
He took two slow breaths, focused his mind on his daily training, and released the first free throw.
SWISH!
He caught the ball for his second free throw and released it smoothly.
SWISH!
Black Mambas: 53
Blue Whales: 46
The Blue Whales rushed the ball up the court without any timeouts left. Their point guard drove into the lane and scored a quick teardrop floater with fifteen seconds left on the clock!

Blue Whales: 48
The Blue Whales immediately fouled Mark the moment he caught the inbound pass. Mark stepped to the line with ten seconds left and hit one of two free throws!
Black Mambas: 54
Blue Whales: 48
Diego Paterno grabbed the rebound, sprinted up the floor, and launched a deep, desperate three-pointer as time ran out!
The ball hit the back of the iron rim, bounced high into the air, and fell harmlessly onto the concrete floorboards just as the final electric horn sounded!
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!
FINAL SCORE:
BLACK MAMBAS: 54
BLUE WHALES: 48
For a split second, the gym fell quiet, and then the entire venue erupted into a deafening, triumphant roar!
"IT IS OVER! THE BLACK MAMBAS HAVE DEFEATED THE UNDEFEATED BLUE WHALES! 54 TO 48!" the court announcer screamed into the microphone!
In that exact millisecond, a flood of bright golden system notifications flashed across Tristan's vision:
MISSION 5 COMPLETED!

Tristan fell onto his knees on the floorboards, bowing his head as a massive wave of relief, joy, and triumph washed over his soul. He had done it. His Basketball System was permanently safe, and their team had officially defeated the best squad in the entire league!
The entire Black Mambas team swarmed onto the court! Marco, Gab, Felix, Mark, John, Kyle, Joshua, Ian, and Joseph tackled Tristan in a massive, joyous pile, screaming and cheering at the top of their lungs! They hugged each other, jumping up and down in a tight circle at center court!
From the concrete bleachers, Coach Gutierrez stood up from his seat. He closed his black clipboard, placed his pen in his pocket, and looked down at Tristan with a proud, genuine smile, nodding his head three times in total respect.
Across the court, Diego Paterno walked over, wiping sweat from his forehead with his jersey. He held out his hand toward Tristan.
"Incredible game, Herrera," Diego said, his voice sincere and full of respect. "Your team played with unmatched heart today. You're a true floor general."
Tristan shook Diego's hand with a firm grip, smiling warmly. "Thank you, Diego. Playing against you brought out the absolute best in all of us."
As the crowd continued to cheer and chant their team's name across the Barangay Burol II gym, Tristan stood side-by-side with his nine brothers. They had faced the ultimate test, protected their dream, and proven to everyone in Dasmariñas that the Black Mambas were a force of nature.
Their playoff journey had officially begun, and as Tristan looked into the future, he knew they were ready to face any challenge that came their way.
