Victoria went inside the bamboo house to rest, but Rachel remained seated by the fire.
"I… I'll also stay out here," she said quietly. "I don't feel sleepy at all."
Victoria glanced at her, then at me, and simply nodded before disappearing into the shelter.
Now it was just the two of us outside. The fire crackled softly between us, sending small sparks up into the dark sky. The sound of the waves in the distance felt louder now that the others were gone.
I looked at Rachel. Her expression was a little downcast, shoulders slightly hunched as she stared into the flames. Her fingers were tightly clasped together in her lap.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
Rachel gave a small hum and nodded, though it didn't look entirely convincing. After a moment, she spoke again, her voice low and a bit fragile.
"Do you think the rescue will come tomorrow?"
I shook my head slightly.
