Chapter 2 - The woman of the path

As the world snapped back into motion, the other him lunged forward, fingers closing around empty air as he attempted to grab him. But before their bodies could collide, the entire scene shattered like fragile glass, sending shards of reality flying everywhere. He felt himself being pulled apart, his consciousness torn from the world he'd known.

When his vision cleared, he found himself standing on a winding path that cut through a sea of green grass. The landscape was different from the endless glade he'd left behind, but the grass seemed to stretch on forever. He stumbled forward, his mind reeling from the sudden change. The world seemed to be in a state of flux, and he struggled to keep up.

As he walked, a telephone booth came into view, standing solitary in the middle of nowhere. A spark of joy ignited within him. He recognized it immediately—a relic of a human world, a familiar piece of infrastructure that somehow bled into this empty expanse. He rushed toward it with a sense of desperation, treating it like a lifeline, a connection to a world that made sense. But as he reached for the receiver, his excitement faltered. He knew no numbers, no one to call.

Undeterred, he started dialing random numbers, hoping someone would pick up. The rotary dial spun round and round, each number clicking into place with a satisfying clunk. After a few attempts, a voice answered – a female voice, soft and gentle.

"Hello?" she said.

He tried to respond, but his voice remained trapped inside his mind, unable to escape his lips. The woman repeated her greeting, her tone growing impatient, but he couldn't muster a single sound.

The line disconnected with a sharp click, and he slumped to the ground, feeling defeated.

He stared at the heavy receiver still clutched in his hand, wondering what he'd done wrong. Suddenly, an idea struck him – there were other phones he could reach out to for help. He thought about it for a moment, but then, a strange, terrifying detachment settled over him.

His mind was stripping the concept away. He realized he had no recollection of how he'd gotten the phone or where it came from. The very idea of the object slipped through his fingers like sand. In seconds, the phone itself seemed to fade from his memory, and he looked down at his empty hands, confused, wondering what he had been holding moments before.

The world around him was shifting, reality bending and eroding in ways he couldn't grasp. The erosion wasn't just in the sky or the grass—it was actively carving away at his thoughts. He sat there, lost and alone, unsure what was real and what wasn't. The grass seemed to whisper secrets in the wind, and the featureless sky above seemed to be watching him, waiting for him to make his next move. He felt small, insignificant, a pawn in a game he didn't understand.

As he sat there, he began to notice strange things. The grass seemed to be growing longer, the blades twisting and turning in ways that seemed almost... deliberate. The air was filled with a faint humming noise, like the quiet buzzing of a thousand bees. He felt a sense of unease growing inside him, a sense that something was watching him, waiting for him to make a mistake.

And then, just as he was starting to process the strangeness of it all, everything went black.

He flustered back to consciousness, finding himself once again on the winding path. He knew something had just happened, but the details were hazy, the intervening moments washed away by the tide. Shrugging it off, he started walking, his feet carrying him forward with a sense of determination.

As he walked, he couldn't shake the feeling that this path was similar to the endless glade of grass he'd left behind. But when he looked back, he saw the path he'd come from stretching behind him, and a sense of relief washed over him. He wasn't trapped in an infinite spatial loop this time.

He continued walking, and soon he noticed electric poles lining the path. The sight was jarring—another fragment of a lost era, as if the landscape was shifting and adapting around him, pulling fragments of civilization from somewhere else. He looked back, and the wires and poles seemed to stretch out behind him into the distance, as if they'd been drawn into existence the moment he took a step. The sight sent a shiver down his spine.

He ran forward, hope rising in his chest. Maybe this path would lead somewhere. And then, in the distance, he saw it – a building. His eyes widened as he took in the structure, and a spark of recognition ignited within him. He knew what a building was, what it represented.

But as he approached the small structure, fear crept in. What might be inside? The wind was growing more furious, whipping his hair into a frenzy, and he hesitated for a moment before pushing open the creaky door.

The interior was dimly lit, but he saw her – a woman, sitting in a chair, her face obscured by the shadows. He froze, his heart pounding in his chest. And then, as if sensing his presence, she slowly raised her head...
