Chapter 138 - The question neither asked

It happened on an ordinary afternoon.

That was the worst part.

Nothing dramatic had led up to it. No warning. No obvious shift.

Just a quiet walk home.

Kai was talking about the program—housing, schedules, the people who had also been accepted.

Velithra listened, nodding, asking questions when it felt right.

"You'll meet so many new people," she said.

"Yeah," he replied. "It'll be different."

Different.

The word stayed in the air.

Kai glanced at her. "You could visit."

She smiled faintly. "Maybe."

Maybe.

He frowned slightly. "You don't sound convinced."

"I just don't know what my life will look like then," she said honestly.

He slowed his steps. "What does that mean?"

Velithra hesitated.

It wasn't something she had planned to say.

"I mean… everything will change. For both of us."

Kai studied her face carefully.

"You think we won't last," he said quietly.

Her head snapped toward him. "That's not what I said."

"But you thought it."

Silence filled the space between them.

Velithra swallowed. "I think distance makes things harder. That's just true."

Kai looked away, jaw tightening slightly.

"I don't want to pretend it won't," she added.

He nodded once, but it wasn't agreement.

It was restraint.

"So what are we doing?" he asked.

The question wasn't angry.

It was vulnerable.

Velithra felt her chest tighten.

"We're here," she said. "Right now."

"That's not an answer."

She stopped walking.

Kai stopped too.

She looked at him, searching for the right words.

"I'm not planning an ending," she said softly. "I'm just not pretending the future is guaranteed."

Kai exhaled slowly.

"I want it to be," he admitted.

She stepped closer.

"So do I."

That was the truth.

Not certainty.

Not promises carved in stone.

Just hope mixed with reality.

Kai ran a hand through his hair. "I think I'm scared."

Velithra blinked.

He rarely admitted that.

"Of leaving?" she asked.

He shook his head slightly.

"Of losing this."

Her heart softened immediately.

She reached for his hand, and this time he didn't hesitate to take it.

"You're not losing it now," she said.

He squeezed her fingers.

"But later?"

She didn't lie.

"I don't know," she whispered.

The honesty hurt.

But it also meant what they had was real.

Kai pulled her into a quiet embrace, resting his chin lightly on her head.

They stood there, neither of them trying to solve something that didn't have an answer yet.

For the first time since the acceptance email—

The future felt close enough to touch.

And uncertain enough to fear.

But neither of them let go.
