Chapter 3 - Nicole.

CHAPTER 3

The four stood there after the sudden shrill, in utter silence.

"Okay, zombies are weird enough, what the hell was that noise?" Christian asked, again, as if anyone had the answer.

"You think we're any more educated on this than you, Mophead?" Perry retaliated, looking around.

"Well excuse my curiosity, Frogface." Christian countered.

"Alright guys, now is not the time to be arguing like preschoolers." Nicole interrupted.

Ruby was leaning a bit over the edge, looking down. "Guys look! The zombies are all filing out of the building!!"

"What?" Nicole stepped forward, beside Ruby. "Holy—you're right!.."

"Yeah, probably because they're more drawn to sounds than sights." Christian stated, sitting legs crossed at the edge.

Perry also leaned over a bit to get a look, but then quickly leaned back away.

"Do you think we should leave the building?" Christian asked.

"Dude, Chris, are you seeing what I'm seeing? If so, I think there's an obvious answer to that." Nicole replied, also retreating from the edge.

Perry glanced over at Nicole, and sighed. "Yeah, it's true the zombies are crowding the area, but we can't stay here forever."

"We aren't staying here forever, you know." Christian commented with his usual pesky tone. Perry rolled her eyes.

"We should leave as soon as those zombies leave. Who knows how fast this thing is spreading?" Ruby declared firmly, as though more a suggestion.

"Ugh. Are they finally gone?" Ruby groaned, sitting at the edge of the building, swinging her legs back and forth halfheartedly.

"They seem to be not that many streets away now… but I think it's a safe call for us." Nicole answered, looking out into the distance, squinting his eyes.

Ruby hopped up, brushing herself off. "Why don't we go then?"

"You're pretty impatient to leave, Ruby. Who knows how vastly this infection has spread." Christian expressed, also standing up from his position on the ground.

Perry started towards the door to leave, Ruby enthusiastically following behind her. After her Nicole, then Christian.

When they got down to the ground floor, Perry led the way.

"Wait, guys, let's go in here for a second."

She entered a shop blindly, but made sure to look around for any possible zombies.

It wasn't until Ruby rushed in happily Perry noticed that it was a cake shop.

"Ruby—don't." Perry warned.

Ruby, who was too distracted, only ignored Perry, finding a fork to dig in.

"Ruby!" It wasn't until Perry had to shout her name, which she responded to.

"What?? I want to eat this cake."

"You mean the one with fungus on it? Now put it away before you get food poisoning, Ruby." Perry sighed, walking forward towards Ruby.

Christian was on the lookout for any zombies around, which, thankfully most had left by now.

"We should leave now— before it becomes any more packed. Possibly not with humans." He stated.

"Lead the way, dude." Nicole suggested, looking at him.

"Gladly.." Christian replied unenthusiastically.

Walking through the city, they quickly realized just how widely the infection had spread now. It'd only been a few hours— yet no lives in sight. Sure, they might've been on the more isolated part, but it wasn't like it to be.. So uninhabited.

"Gosh.. it's so quiet." Christian mumbled under his breath. "Too quiet." Nicole added, walking beside him.

Moving forward it only began to settle in their minds just how serious this could turn out to be. Not a single soul in sight, obviously this was dead serious, not a joke. It only started to become clearer as they moved on.

There weren't that many zombies either, considering all of them had left earlier to the sound of the shrill.

Fighting was an option, when it was necessary. Right now, there were zombies around, but not enough to easily outnumber them.

But.. Ruby turned around, only to check the distance they've travelled, only to see a horde of zombies. It's not like they could run fast or at them even if they wanted, but suppose it was out of instinct Ruby started running out of the blue.

"Ruby..? Why are you—" Nicole stopped speaking as he also turned around to see what Ruby did. "Oh god." he maffled.

Though, naturally the rest followed after her.

Catching their breath, Perry leaned back against a car. "Ruby.. we need to talk about your communicating skills," she said, still panting.

"I'm sorry, alright? I panicked!"

"Let's just keep moving." Nicole proposed.

"Like we have a choice." Christian exhaled.

No humans, no traffic, not even a car driving around. Perry started to wonder, how it came to be like this, only in a mere four hours?

Having nothing close to an accurate answer, she started to ponder, all while walking. She was getting distracted with theories. What if it was purposeful? She wasn't even sure how something like this could happen accidentally.

Being so lost in thought, Perry bumped into Ruby's back as they came to a stop.

They stopped in front of a recently built school. Yet, it was trashed now. Trashed with blood and bodies.

It felt as if they were the only people walking the country. It was that silent.

It was already dark, and not having come across any other place to stay, they decided to enter the school.

"This place smells." Ruby bluntly stated. "It's dark. Anyone brought a flashlight?" Nicole asked..

"Yeah.." Christian's voice trailed off. He was trying to turn on the flashlight, but failing miserably.

Nicole sighed and took it from him. He turned it on and started leading through the hallways. It was empty, as far as they could see.

Stopping at an intersection, Nicole glanced back at the others. "Which way?"

"Straight?" Ruby recommended.

So, straight they went. That was before Nicole was grabbed. By what? He didn't know. But he yelped, although not too loud, the other three heard it. They turned around, only to see Nicole gone, his flashlight on the ground.

"Nicole?!" Ruby panicked.
