"See what I mean?" Ruby looked at both Axelle and Waylen. I turned to Ruby and just sighed. Christian didn't say anything for a moment, but broke the silence anyway.
"We aren't that bad, come on.." He said, looking at Ruby.
Ruby just scoffed. "You two, not bad? That's the worst lie you've told so far, Christian." She stated.
It was silent for a good few moments.. before the van came to a stop. Why? I don't know. I glanced over to Nicole, who was looking ahead. I looked ahead aswell, noticing the zombies. The tires did screech, unfortunately. A few zombies had turned back. Nicole, on the other hand, didn't start driving. He was just looking ahead. I called out to him, wondering why he wasn't driving even while the zombies were as close as they were right now.
"You want us to die, Nicole?" I asked, walking over to his seat. He then set the vehicle to reverse before sighing.
"Sorry, sorry.." he apologized. That's.. odd. Why did he freeze up like that? That's not like him, at all. He usually has great reaction time, what about this time? Odd.
"It's fine.." Ruby replied softly, speaking up. I sat down, across Christian and leaned back against the cushions.
Nicole reversed, and started speeding the opposite way, away from the horde of zombies. It was silent, until in the distance
was heard by an ambulance. It was weird for sure. We hadn't heard that since the start of this apocalypse.
oddly enough, it was getting even closer. The realization did hit me, that to be driving and to turn on the ambulance you'd most likely have to be human.. right?
Nicole continued driving, going any direction he pleased.. I guess. we probably should settle at a safe place, though. being on the move all time might not be the best idea, especially while Nathan and his crew were after us. Ruby walked over to the passenger seat, which was empty until she sat down there. I could see her steal glances at Nicole, but I just sighed under my breath.
"So boring.." Ruby whined, quietly.
Nicole chuckled slightly, "It's the apocalypse, yet that's what you're worried about?" Ruby just huffed, looking out the window.
At times like these, it was honestly a surprise that me and Christian aren't already fighting. Maybe it's character development? obviously for him.. not me.
I glanced over to him, afterall he was being extremely quiet throughout this whole ride. I saw him already glancing at me and I just looked away.
"So annoying," he muttered, obviously to piss me off. It was kind of working, unfortunately.
"Excuse me..?" I replied to him, crossing my arms. He huffed.
"You, who else?.." I closed my eyes, just staying silent.
"Are you trying to argue with me?" I opened my eyes again.
"It's kind of funny to see you irritated, plus this ride is quiet and boring." he smirked, still sitting lazily against the van.
It annoyed me greatly that he found it amusing to annoy me. But I guess that's how it's always been— I find it amusing when he gets angry aswell, I suppose.
"Oh please, shut your mouth, it will benefit both of us." he scoffed, but actually did shut up.
The ride went silent again, Nicole sighing shortly after me and Christians exchanged.
A while passed, the only sound was the vehicle's engine, and the not so distant chatter between Nicole and Ruby. Nicole was asking about Maverick, after noticing how they both seemed extremely distant, like they used to know each other in the past.
"oh, him? we.. knew each other for a while.. during elementary and middle school." Ruby answered Nicole's question. This caught both me and Christians attention.
"You knew Maverick before?" Christian asked her. Ruby nodded subtly.
"Yeah, we were.. really good friends. For a while, at least." she huffed..
"Then.. what went wrong?" Nicole inquired.
Ruby took a deep breath before speaking. She didn't seem too upset, thankfully.
"Well, this one day during middle school, we got a three day holiday, and the 'cool' kids were throwing a party.. and Maverick was invited. I told him they were bad influences, but he didn't listen.. and went to the party. After that he wants the same.. he stopped talking to me, and got extremely distant. I actually developed feelings for him.. and one of his friends told me he liked me back too. but at that time he was already hanging out with the other group." Ruby explained. We all listened. It was silent for a few moments before Christian spoke up.
"He sounds like an idiot to just leave you like that." he said, his eyes closed and leaning back in his seat, arms crossed.
"That's ridiculous, he just left you like that?" Nicole said. Ruby nodded.
"But right after that I met Christian, so honestly it was for the better.." she replied.
no one spoke, the information still being processed. Maverick definitely sounded like an asshole to leave Ruby like that. Eventually, Ruby spoke again, but this time to Nicole. and what she said was a bit concerning.
"Hey.. could you open the window? I'm feeling a bit nauseous." she said. Nicole obeyed, opening the window. Ruby looked out, letting the wind hit her face.
"You okay?" he asked her. Ruby nodded.
A few minutes passed, everyone was silent. Christian was just mumbling to himself.
"I'm glad we're at least out of the grasp of Nathan and his group.." no one spoke after that, but then heard a voice say,
"Who said?" immediately, I jolted up in my seat. It wasn't Ruby, Nicole or even Christian.
I looked around, only to see.. Nathan. He was at Ruby's window. Ruby yelped, jumping back a bit in her seat. Nicole also getting startled, the vehicle swerved off lane, almost crashing. but he managed to get back on track.
"DUDE!! that scared me to death!!" Christian yelled. but as for more important matters, Nathan was at Ruby's window, on a motorcycle, Emily sitting behind him.
"Hey guys!~" said Emily, leaning forward, getting in frame.
"Jesus.." Nicole cursed under his breath. Without much of a second thought, Nicole sped up excessively, jumping from 60 mph to 90 mph, losing the two, not for long, though. Axelle and Waylen, who were still in the van, were napping.. when they woke up due to the suddenness of the situation..
