Chapter 87 - Chapter 87 — Echoes Beneath the Docks

The timer haunted me.

61 hours.

Three words burned behind my eyes every time I blinked.

Council Response Imminent.

The system never explained what would happen when the countdown reached zero. Somehow, that made it worse.

We left the alley before dawn.

The bodies of the Silent Serpents had already dissolved into drifting ash, leaving only bloodstains and shattered stone behind. Anyone walking through later would think a riot had broken out.

Maybe it had.

Valenport was a city at war with itself. Most people just hadn't realized it yet.

The streets grew narrower as we moved east, toward the docks. Fog rolled in from the sea, swallowing lantern light and turning every silhouette into a potential assassin.

Loran finally broke the silence.

"Anyone else notice they retreated?"

Ryn nodded immediately.

"Yes."

I glanced at her.

"Meaning?"

Her expression darkened.

"The Serpents never abandon a contract."

A chill crawled down my spine.

"Never?"

"Never."

Mira folded her arms.

"Then why are we still alive?"

Ryn was quiet for several seconds.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Because killing us wasn't the objective."

Nobody spoke after that.

Because we were all thinking the same thing.

If the assassins weren't sent to kill us...

Then they were sent to find something.

And they had.

We reached an abandoned warehouse overlooking the eastern harbor shortly after sunrise.

The building belonged to one of Ryn's old contacts.

Or at least it had.

The rusted door hung open.

That was the first bad sign.

The blood was the second.

Loran immediately drew his axe.

"Well."

I sighed.

"Of course."

Ryn slipped inside first.

The rest of us followed.

The warehouse was empty.

Crates had been smashed apart. Shelves overturned. Papers scattered across the floor.

A search.

A thorough one.

Someone had been looking for information.

Then I saw the body.

An old man lay slumped against the far wall.

Gray hair.

Weathered face.

A single wound through the chest.

Clean.

Precise.

Professional.

Ryn froze.

For a moment, I saw something crack behind her usual mask.

"He was retired."

Her voice sounded distant.

"He left the Serpents years ago."

Mira knelt beside the corpse.

Her expression tightened.

"Dead less than six hours."

Loran cursed.

"Meaning whoever did this is close."

"No," Ryn said.

"They're gone."

I noticed something in the dead man's hand.

A piece of parchment.

I carefully pulled it free.

Three words had been written in black ink.

HE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING

The moment I read them, the system erupted.

[ ALERT ]

[ Memory Suppression Protocol Detected ]

[ External Trigger Identified ]

[ Unauthorized Seal Weakening ]

Pain exploded inside my skull.

I staggered backward.

The warehouse vanished.

The world shattered.

Fire.

Screaming.

Steel.

I stood atop a mountain of corpses.

Thousands.

No.

Tens of thousands.

The sky burned crimson.

My sword dripped black blood.

Across from me stood a man wearing silver armor.

A familiar man.

A man I knew.

A man I hated.

Master Aric.

But he looked younger.

And terrified.

"Kael!"

His voice echoed across the battlefield.

"You have to stop!"

I laughed.

Not the laugh I knew.

Something colder.

Something monstrous.

The sound made entire armies retreat.

Then I heard another voice.

A woman's voice.

Broken.

Desperate.

"Please..."

The battlefield trembled.

The world cracked.

And I saw her.

A woman wrapped in silver light.

Chains covered her arms.

Her eyes locked onto mine.

Tears streamed down her face.

"Remember me."

The vision ended.

I crashed into reality.

The warehouse returned.

My knees slammed into the floor.

Blood poured from my nose.

Mira was immediately beside me.

"Kael!"

"I'm fine."

"You are absolutely not fine."

I ignored her.

Because the system was still flashing.

[ Memory Fragment Restored: 3% ]

[ Soul Seal Integrity: 87% ]

[ New Information Acquired ]

[ The Betrayal Was Not The Beginning ]

Silence filled the warehouse.

Even Loran looked shaken.

"What happened?" he asked.

I stared at the message.

My heart hammered.

For years I had believed Aric's betrayal started everything.

My fall.

My lost power.

My exile.

My hatred.

But now...

Now the system itself was telling me something else.

Something worse.

Something older.

Something buried.

Ryn looked at the parchment again.

Her eyes widened.

"Wait."

She grabbed it from my hand.

Turning it over.

There was more writing on the back.

Only visible in the light.

A symbol.

A serpent coiled around a broken crown.

Ryn's face went pale.

For the first time since I'd met her...

She looked genuinely afraid.

"That's impossible."

"What is it?" Mira asked.

Ryn swallowed.

"The original Serpents."

"The ones before the Council."

Loran frowned.

"I thought the Council created them."

"They didn't."

The words dropped like stones.

"The Council stole them."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Ryn stared at the symbol.

"I saw this once when I was a trainee."

"My instructor said if I ever found it again..."

She hesitated.

"Run."

The room suddenly felt much colder.

I rose slowly to my feet.

The fragment of memory still burned in my mind.

The chained woman.

The battlefield.

Aric's fear.

None of it made sense.

Yet.

But it would.

I could feel it.

Every answer we needed was buried beneath layers of lies.

Council lies.

Serpent lies.

Perhaps even my own.

Then the system spoke once more.

[ Hidden Quest Discovered ]

[ The First Coil ]

Objective:

Locate the Forgotten Vault beneath Valenport.

Reward:

Memory Restoration.

Unknown Reward.

Failure:

Council Ascension Event.

A map appeared in my vision.

Ancient.

Incomplete.

Yet unmistakable.

It pointed directly beneath the docks.

Far below the city.

Into darkness.

Into secrets.

Into whatever the Council had spent years trying to bury.

Loran looked at me.

"Tell me that look doesn't mean what I think it means."

I smiled despite the blood still on my face.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

"No."

His shoulders slumped.

"Wonderful."

Mira sighed.

"We're going underground, aren't we?"

"Looks that way."

Ryn stared toward the harbor.

Toward the fog-covered sea.

Toward the place where the map pointed.

"The Forgotten Vault..."

Her voice trembled.

"If it really exists..."

She stopped.

"What?"

Ryn looked at us.

Then at the symbol.

Then at me.

"The Council isn't the oldest power in Valenport."

The wind rattled the warehouse windows.

Outside, the harbor bells began to ring.

One.

Two.

Three.

A warning signal.

Not for a storm.

Not for a fire.

For an arrival.

Loran rushed to the window.

The color drained from his face.

"Kael."

I joined him.

And felt my stomach tighten.

A massive black warship was entering the harbor.

No merchant vessel.

No naval patrol.

The hull carried the silver crest of the Council of Nine.

Every dockworker nearby was running.

Every guard was clearing the streets.

At the bow stood a lone figure.

Tall.

Motionless.

Wrapped in dark steel armor.

Even from this distance, his Resonance pressed against the city like a mountain.

The system identified him instantly.

[ Council Agent Detected ]

[ Rank Assessment: A+ ]

[ Designation: Agent Veyr ]

[ Specialization: Psychological Warfare ]

[ Threat Level: Extreme ]

The figure slowly turned his head.

And somehow...

Across the entire harbor...

His gaze found mine.

A smile appeared beneath his iron mask.

The countdown ticked lower.

61:22:00

61:21:59

61:21:58

The Council had made its next move.

And Agent Veyr had arrived.
