Chapter 90 - Chapter 90 — The Ten-Minute Lie

The first explosion didn't come from above.

It came from the walls.

Stone ruptured inward as if the warehouse itself had been struck by a hammer the size of a siege engine. Dust and splinters of wood filled the basement in an instant.

Mira threw up a barrier on instinct—light snapping into a curved dome around us just as debris crashed down.

Loran swore.

"Ten minutes my ass!"

Ryn was already moving.

"Council breach formation," she snapped. "They're not entering—they're erasing the structure."

Another impact hit.

Then another.

Each one closer to the basement ceiling.

I forced myself upright.

My body still felt wrong—like part of me was half a step out of sync with reality—but there was no time to unravel it.

The system flickered again.

[ HOSTILE UNIT DETECTED ]

[ MULTIPLE SIGNATURES: A-RANK ENFORCER SQUAD ]

[ SUPPORT: UNKNOWN TECHNIQUE USERS ]

[ OBJECTIVE: CAPTURE / TERMINATION AUTHORIZED ]

"Capture or kill," I muttered.

Mira glanced at me sharply.

"That's new?"

"No," I said. "It's just… honest."

A crack split the ceiling.

Light poured through.

And with it—pressure.

Not physical pressure.

Resonance pressure.

Heavy. Controlled. Military-grade.

Ryn went pale.

"That's not Enforcers."

Loran tightened his grip.

"Then what is it?"

Ryn hesitated.

"…Council Purge Unit."

The name alone made the temperature drop.

Even Veyr had sounded wary.

And Veyr didn't sound wary often.

Another section of ceiling collapsed.

Through the dust, silhouettes appeared above us.

Armored.

Perfectly still.

Not rushing.

Not panicking.

Professional.

One of them stepped forward.

And spoke.

"Kael Draven."

His voice carried effortlessly through stone.

"You are ordered to surrender in the name of the Council of Nine."

No anger.

No threat.

Just procedure.

Like reading a law.

Mira's hand tightened on my arm.

Ryn whispered, "Don't answer."

But I already knew I wouldn't.

Because I could feel it now.

Something inside me reacting.

Not to fear.

To recognition.

The same way it had reacted to Veyr.

Like these people weren't just enemies.

They were connected to the thing buried under my soul.

The speaker continued.

"You are in violation of containment statute seven—SSS anomaly classification."

A pause.

Then—

"Secondary directive is active."

Loran frowned.

"Secondary directive?"

The man above tilted his head slightly.

"Extraction of sealed core fragments."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even Loran stopped breathing.

Ryn's voice was barely audible.

"…they're not here for you."

Mira looked at me.

"That's not comforting."

The ceiling exploded inward.

Not collapse—precision breach.

Figures dropped through the opening.

Five of them.

Then ten.

Then more.

They landed without sound.

Perfect formations.

Each one surrounded by faint, rotating sigils of pale blue light—Resonance dampeners.

Anti-skill fields.

Anti-core fields.

Loran raised his axe.

"Alright," he muttered. "I don't like quiet people."

The nearest Purge Unit raised a hand.

And Loran's axe stopped mid-swing.

Not blocked.

Not deflected.

Just… frozen.

Like time had caught it.

Loran blinked.

"What the—"

His arm trembled as he tried to force it forward.

It wouldn't move.

Ryn cursed sharply.

"Resonance Lock Fields!"

Mira extended her hand—light flaring—

And immediately flickered out.

Her eyes widened.

"It's suppressing casting vectors!"

Another unit stepped forward.

Calm.

Measured.

"You are surrounded," the leader said.

"Compliance will reduce structural damage."

I stepped forward.

Slowly.

The pressure around me increased immediately.

Like the world was trying to press me back into place.

My Core reacted.

Hard.

Pain shot through my spine.

But I kept moving.

"You want me," I said.

The leader nodded once.

"Yes."

"Alive?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He answered without hesitation.

"Containment asset retrieval is required for stabilization of regional Resonance imbalance."

Ryn's voice cut in.

"They're talking about you like you're a weapon system."

The leader didn't look at her.

"You are irrelevant to primary objective."

That alone made Loran strain harder against his frozen axe.

"Say that again," he growled.

The leader ignored him.

Instead, he lifted his hand.

"Begin extraction."

The Purge Units moved.

Not toward us.

Around us.

Forming a circle.

A sealing formation.

The air thickened.

The floor beneath us lit up with geometric patterns—blue lines forming a complex containment array.

Mira stepped back.

"This is a prison field."

Ryn's eyes widened slightly.

"…no."

She shook her head once.

"That's worse."

I looked down.

The lines were pulsing.

Responding.

To me.

The Core inside my chest pulsed back.

Like it recognized its cage.

Like it hated it.

The system screamed.

[ CORE RESONANCE SPIKE ]

[ SEAL PRESSURE CRITICAL ]

[ WARNING: CONTAINMENT FIELD MATCHING INTERNAL SEAL FREQUENCY ]

[ HOST COMPATIBILITY DETECTED ]

My breath caught.

"They're syncing with it," I said.

Ryn snapped her head toward me.

"What?"

Mira followed my gaze.

"The field… it's not just restraining you," I said.

"It's aligning with the seal inside me."

Loran forced out a laugh.

"That sounds bad."

"It is," Ryn said immediately.

The leader raised his hand higher.

The field tightened.

And then—

Something inside me shifted.

Not pain this time.

Awareness.

The seal reacted like a living thing being touched from the outside.

Like someone had found the lock.

And was turning it.

My vision blurred.

The basement faded again.

But this time—

I didn't fall into memory.

I fell inward.

Darkness.

But structured.

Not endless.

A space built like a cathedral of broken light.

And at its center—

The seal.

But now it wasn't alone.

Around it stood chains.

Not physical ones.

Conceptual.

Each chain anchored to something I couldn't fully see.

Memory.

Power.

Identity.

And someone—something—was pulling one of them.

The chain groaned.

The seal cracked slightly.

And a voice whispered from the dark:

"Almost open."

I snapped back violently.

Mira caught me before I hit the ground.

But I barely felt it.

Because everything had changed.

"They're opening it," I said.

Ryn went still.

"No," she said.

"That's impossible."

The leader tilted his head slightly.

"Progress detected."

Loran snarled.

"Alright, I've had enough of being a science experiment."

His muscles tensed harder.

And for a brief moment—

Something inside him broke.

Not physically.

His Resonance surged.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

His axe ignited with violent energy and shattered the lock field around it.

The Purge Unit nearest him staggered.

"Resonance deviation—"

Loran moved.

Fast.

A blur of rage and force.

The unit was thrown back through two others.

Mira gasped.

"Loran—don't overextend!"

He didn't listen.

Ryn sighed.

"…idiot."

But she moved too.

A dagger flashed.

A Purge Unit dropped.

Silent.

Precise.

Meant for killing people who didn't move like people.

I looked at the leader.

He was still calm.

Watching.

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

"External interference detected."

A pause.

Then—

"Agent Veyr protocol active."

The air shifted.

Somewhere above us—

Something moved.

Not footsteps.

Not sound.

Just presence.

And Veyr's voice echoed faintly through the broken warehouse.

"Ah," he said.

"I was wondering when you'd activate that."

The leader's head turned slightly upward.

"Agent Veyr. You are interfering with Council procedure."

Veyr chuckled.

"Am I?"

A pause.

Then—

"Or am I correcting it?"

The containment field flickered.

The seal inside me responded violently.

And for the first time—

I felt it clearly.

Whatever was buried inside me…

was not just being contained.

It was being guarded.

By multiple forces.

Some trying to open it.

Some trying to suppress it.

And some—

Just watching it become something the world might not survive.

The leader raised his hand.

"Terminate interference."

The Purge Units shifted.

But before they could move—

The entire basement went dark.

Not absence of light.

Absence of control.

And Veyr's voice came from everywhere at once.

"Too late."

The seal inside me cracked another fraction.

And I screamed.

Not in pain.

In recognition.

Because something on the other side—

Finally screamed back.
