Chapter 40 - Exploring

"Finally I must reinforce Albus's warning about the third floor corridor. While curiosity is a wonderous thing in this case it's best left well enough alone. That is all, Welcome to Ravenclaw once more!" Flitwick said warmly before leaving.

The prefect spoke up "Through that door is the male dormitories and through that door is the female dormitories. You are all quite lucky that as due to the majority of people being sorted into Gryffindor or Hufflepuff each of you have a single room to yourselves due to having many more rooms than students in the house, Slytherin has a similar set up. The doors of your rooms with have your name written on it. I suggest going to bed immediately to fully utilize your time tomorrow in familiarizing yourself with the castle." he said pointing out the doors leading to the rooms and then promptly leaving.

"I'm headed to bed then." I announced before following the prefect through the door to the male dormitory.

I didn't even need haki to know there was magic involved here as the spiral staircase had doors lining it's outside that led to different rooms.

I found the one with my name on it and turned the handle before stepping in. The room was circular with a space of about ten meters in all directions and a five meter tall ceiling. There was a single window looking out across the top of the school facing the central tower. The rooms furnishing consisted of a large plain dresser, a wooden nightstand with two drawers and a single large bed covered in a blue and bronze comforter blanket. My trunk sat neatly at the foot of my bed with a small basket next to it for my laundry.-

'Quaint but in need of decoration.' I thought with a shrug as I slipped off my shoes at the door and set them neatly next to it.

I walked across the room in my socks and carefully started to strip off my school uniform. I highly doubted I was expected to sleep in it after all. I folded it and set it on top of my dresser before opening a drawer and walking over to my trunk. I moved my clothes from my trunk to the dresser while setting my books out on my nightstand for easy access.-

"Colloportus." I said with a twist of my wand at the door remotely locking it.

Satisfied I changed into my pajama bottoms before moving the blanket and top sheet aside on the bed to slip in and cover up. I easily fell asleep as I had already broken my usual sleep pattern and I felt it. I woke to the sun rising slowly above the horizon and stretched causing my joints to pop pleasantly as I got out of bed. Walking over to the dresser I got me a pair of pants, a shirt and my coat. -

I decided to skip my morning exercise and unlocked my room before setting out to explore the castle. I briefly debated about going to see Hagrid about these eggs I had but decided against it for now as it would be beyond suspicious if I did so on the first day of school. By my estimation I would only be roughly safe to do so around the first of October. To my surprise I wasn't the first up as in the common room several senior students were already awake and chatting or playing wizard chess. Wizard chess was like if normal chess met battlefield command. -

The moves were the same but the pieces themselves were semi-alive and could actively move themselves and even try and help the one commanding them in terms of strategy. Additionally you needed to treat the pieces well or they'd turn resentful and may even disobey orders. I myself wasn't all that interested in the game as it was just chess with extra magical flare. None of my years students seemed to be up though which clearly caught the older students by surprise. More than one looked me over for a moment before deciding they didn't really care and went back to their business.-

I wasted no time at all leaving the common room and heading down the stairs to explore the castle. I checked the two hallways the prefect passed the night before and found one led to the great clocktowers upper level and the second was more or less abandoned with no important rooms as far as I could tell. A bit disappointing but not surprising given the sheer size of the school. The castle simply had too much space that was never used since there was no need. I wouldn't even be surprised to find that there were priceless artifacts just sitting in a room gathering dust since no one bothered checking the things.-

I moved back to the grand staircase and proceeded to get thoroughly confused as I took the first set I got the chance to that ended up taking me all the way to the seventh floor.

'Wasn't planning to visit the Room but when on the seventh floor I guess.' I thought with a shrug as I started checking the place out carefully.

"Hey! You there, first year!" a voice called out as I was looking at a display case with a Diricawl skeleton in it.

I turned towards the source of the sound only to find it was a small portrait of a red haired man carrying a sword while wearing shiny armor.

"Did you say something just now?" I asked confused.

"Obviously, I was making my rounds and happened to spot you way over here and had to know what was going on." the man in the portrait said with a bright grin.

"I'm exploring the castle on my free day before classes start of course. Noticed a slight bit of scuffing on the floor by this display and wondered if there was a secret here. What about you?" I said honestly.

"Being a portrait can be boring so I like to stretch my legs every now and again. Good eye by the way, rub the beak and you'll see." the portrait said still grinning.

I saw no reason why not and reached out carefully into the display and gently rubbed the beak of the skeleton. Almost immediately the skeleton shook itself and squawked loudly before the whole display slides to the side to reveal a small metal hoop stuck straight into stone at the floor.

"Now pull the hoop outwards and then up." the portrait instructed eagerly and I followed the instructions intrigued.
