Chapter 10 - Time to change classes! Or get one...

"To store an item, you just need to envision yourself storing it away. That simple. Each slot in your inventory can hold a different type of item. Some items can stack, but those are mostly resources. For example, once you collect a unit of wood, it will occupy one slot in your inventory. Then, if you keep collecting more, they'll stack into that same slot." — she explained, pausing briefly to let her words sink in.

"However, items like weapons and tools will each occupy one slot. There are some roundabout ways of using the inventory, but you'll have to research those on your own."

"Remember, it's possible to stack items up to one hundred units in a single slot. After that, it'll occupy another. Also, items inside your inventory have no weight and exist in a sort of time stasis — meaning food won't spoil and might even stay warm. It's also impossible to store living beings inside, so don't even think about it."

Quite the handy feature, I must say. Really useful.

"Any questions about the inventory?" — she asked, glancing around. "No? Great! Then let's talk about resurrection — and why you should never mess with beings much stronger than you."

Seeing the looks of shock spreading through the crowd, she continued — "Yes, resurrection. You didn't mishear. In Elysium, it is indeed possible to return from the dead. But there are conditions and consequences to that, so don't just go dying randomly because you felt like it."

"First, your spirit — or soul — must remain intact. Otherwise, there wouldn't even be anything to bring back. This is also why you should never provoke someone above your Tier. Higher-Tier opponents have many ways to grant you a True Death. Those means are rare among those in the same Tier, but could even be considered quite common if there is enough of a difference."

"Secondly, every time someone is resurrected, there's a bit of wear and tear to their very being. It varies for each individual. Some might only be able to resurrect once or twice, while others can return hundreds of times without issue — though such cases are exceedingly rare. So treat every life you get as your very last, as it might very well be." — She warned.

"As for the other consequences, they include a drop in stats and, if you're unlucky, the loss of some or all items in your inventory. So be cautious not to die while carrying anything valuable — not that this warning should even be necessary."

"Overall, it works like this: you die, you wait some time, and then you're resurrected at the last Resurrection Stele you visited, and just so you know, that strange stone where you first appeared is one such Stele." — I could see some people looking confused at that, probably those who were too stunned to even notice the Stele in the first place.

"Any questions?" — she asked, not wasting a single moment — "If not..." — she began, only to be interrupted by a timid voice from the crowd.

"E-excuse me…" — said a little girl, who had no more than ten years old — "Can people who died before we arrived in Elysium still be brought back?" — she asked, eyes full of innocent hope.

That question made the head priestess pause slightly before she replied, her tone noticeably softer than before — "I'm sorry. That much is not possible."

The girl's face fell instantly, and I let out a bitter breath I hadn't even realized I was holding. — 'As expected…'

That was the end of it. Afterward, they gave us a few more warnings before sending us toward the town center, where, apparently, there was a place we could use to change — or, in our case, obtain — a class.

When we arrived, we found a small plaza with benches, a few food vendors, and some trinket stalls. And there, in the center, stood a floating green crystal.

We were guided toward the crystal and instructed to touch it, one by one. Curious, I made sure no one was watching me and tried to appraise the thing.

A special crystal crafted by scholars to help individuals change their class into any recorded Basic Class. Touch to begin Class Selection. There will be a small trial to test compatibility with the chosen class, rewarding those deemed suitable.

Special Properties:

-

'Oh? Interesting…' — Seems like there's no chance of jumping straight into some overpowered class, but that makes sense. If this world is anything like my old one, people in power would definitely gatekeep the good stuff — stronger classes included.

Still, it looks like there's a chance of getting something useful out of it. I wonder what this trial will be like.

The priestesses and their guards organized us into a single line and started explaining how the class change worked.

First, we'd touch the crystal, and a prompt would appear asking if we wanted to change classes. If we selected "Yes," we'd be transported into an individual Trial Instance where we could choose a class and be tested for compatibility.

If we completed the trial successfully, we'd receive useful bonuses — maybe a boost to future progression, or even some class-specific skills. They also told us that, since it would be our first time changing classes, we'd get a sort of starter pack too. Yay! Freebies are always good.

They warned us to choose carefully, as one can only change classes once a month. Also, class-specific skills become locked if you switch to an unrelated class. For example, if an archer with a bow skill changed to a sword-using class, that skill would be sealed.

Since I was in no hurry, I moved to the back of the line, keeping my eyes on the first few people attempting the process. First in line happened to be that conceited blond idiot from earlier — still looking just as confident, like he truly believed he was the main character. I could only shake my head at that.

He touched the crystal and, after a moment, vanished in motes of white light.

Not gonna lie, I was getting a bit excited here…
