Alexander's hands were still shaking from adrenaline as he walked away from his study, leaving the federal agents to process the scene. The weight of everything that had just been revealed, his mother's decades-long counterintelligence operation, the scope of the conspiracy against his family, Marcus and Agent Walsh's arrest, all of it felt surreal.
But none of it mattered now. Nothing mattered except getting to Sophia.
He found her in the kitchen, pacing back and forth while speaking rapidly into her headset, coordinating with the security teams that were sweeping the house. When she saw him, she immediately pulled off the headset and launched herself into his arms.
"Alexander." His name was a prayer on her lips as she crashed against him, her hands fisting in his shirt, her face buried against his neck.
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her so tightly he was afraid he might hurt her, but she only pressed closer. "It's over," he whispered against her hair. "Marcus is in custody, the conspiracy is exposed, the children are safe."
"Your mother is absolutely terrifying," Sophia said, her voice muffled against his shoulder. "I watched her dismantle a decades-long criminal operation like she was planning a charity gala."
Alexander laughed, the sound rough with emotion. "I'm still trying to process that my socialite mother was actually running counterintelligence operations this entire time."
Sophia pulled back to look at him, her eyes bright with fierce pride and lingering adrenaline. "She protected us. All of us. She's been planning this takedown for years, waiting for the right moment to bring them all down."
"And now it's finished," Alexander said, cupping her face in his hands. "No more threats, no more enemies in the shadows, no more wondering if the people we love are safe."
"Are you sure?" Sophia asked quietly. "Your mother said this conspiracy goes back decades. What if there are still people out there?"
Alexander studied her face, seeing the concern and love there, the way she worried about his family as if it were her own. Because it was her own, he realized. Somewhere along the way, she'd become the heart of their home, the center around which everything else revolved.
"Then we'll face them together," he said simply. "Whatever comes next, we'll handle it as a team."
"Alexander..." she started, but he silenced her with a kiss that was desperate and consuming and full of all the fear he'd carried for months about losing her.
When they broke apart, both breathing hard, he pressed his forehead to hers. "Marry me."
Sophia's eyes went wide with surprise. "What?"
"Marry me," he repeated, his voice rough with emotion. "Right now. Tonight. I can't wait anymore, Sophia. When I thought this conspiracy might tear us apart, when I realized that all my money and power meant nothing if you weren't there to share it with, that's when I knew. I've known for months, but I was too afraid to say it."
"You're running on adrenaline," she said softly, though her eyes were filled with tears of joy. "We both are. This isn't the time..."
"This is exactly the time," he interrupted fiercely. "When everything was falling apart, when our world was under attack, you stood by me. You fought for us, for our family. You didn't run when things got dangerous, you got stronger."
He took her hands in his, marveling at how perfectly they fit. "I don't have a ring ready. I don't have a romantic speech prepared. I don't even have a plan beyond finding someone who can marry us before sunrise. But I love you, Sophia Martinez, with everything I am and everything I'll ever be."
Tears were streaming down her face now, but she was smiling through them with radiant happiness. "You impossible, wonderful man. Do you know what you're asking me to sign up for? A life with a family that's apparently been involved in government conspiracies for decades?"
"I'm asking you to sign up for me," he said simply. "For us. For the life we've already built together, for the love that's already there. For whatever comes next, as long as we face it side by side."
Sophia stared at him for a long moment, her thumbs brushing over his knuckles. When she spoke, her voice was steady despite the tears. "Yes."
"Yes?"
"Yes, I'll marry you, Alexander Steele. Tonight, tomorrow, whenever you want. I've been yours for months already, we might as well make it official."
Alexander's heart soared as he lifted her off her feet, spinning her around the kitchen as she laughed with pure joy. When he set her down, he kissed her again, slower this time, deeper, pouring all his love and relief into the contact.
"The children are going to be thrilled," Sophia said against his lips. "Emma's been planning our wedding in her head for weeks."
"And Ethan keeps asking when he gets to call you Mom officially," Alexander added with a smile.
"Well, I guess after tonight, he won't have to ask anymore," Sophia laughed.
They were interrupted by the sound of Victoria's heels clicking on the kitchen tiles. Alexander's mother appeared in the doorway, looking perfectly composed despite having just orchestrated the takedown of a criminal conspiracy.
"Darling," Victoria said warmly, "I trust the evening's excitement is concluded to your satisfaction?"
"Mother," Alexander said, still holding Sophia close, "we need to have a very long conversation about who you really are and what you've been doing."
"Of course," Victoria agreed. "But first, I believe congratulations are in order?"
Alexander frowned. "How could you possibly..."
"The kitchen security cameras have audio, darling," Victoria said with an amused smile. "I heard your rather impromptu proposal."
Sophia groaned and buried her face against Alexander's chest. "Your mother heard everything."
"Everything," Victoria confirmed cheerfully. "Including the part where you accepted. I've already called Judge Morrison. He owes me several favors and will be here within the hour."
"You arranged a wedding in the ten minutes since we got engaged?" Alexander asked in amazement.
"Darling, I've been keeping Judge Morrison on standby for weeks," Victoria said matter-of-factly. "Anyone with eyes could see where this was heading. I just needed you two to catch up to what everyone else already knew."
Her expression softened with genuine warmth. "Your father would be so proud. He always said the right woman would make you brave enough to take the leap."
As they stood there in the kitchen that had become the heart of their home, Alexander realized that despite everything they'd endured, all the danger and deception, he'd never felt more certain about anything in his life.
By morning, Sophia would be his wife, Emma and Ethan would officially have the mother they adored, and their family would be complete. Whatever new challenges emerged from the shadows of the Steele legacy, they would face them together.
And that made him feel invincible.
