Chapter 63 - Ch.63 Encouragement

Morning light filtered through the bamboo outside Xue Lian's residence, slicing pale gold across the stone floor.

She rose before the bell.

Her breathing was slow, steady, flowing in the pattern Master Liu had shown her the night before. Yin Qi gathered like cool mist within her dantian, refined not in bursts, but in quiet accumulation. For the first time since the forest, cultivation did not feel like desperation.

It felt like construction.

Good...

Master Yao murmured within her soul.

You are building, not grasping.

Xue Lian opened her eyes as the dawn bell finally rang.

She washed quickly, changed into the pale green-white robes of a personal disciple, and stepped out into the bamboo-lined path leading toward her assigned training grounds.

The cultivation terrace beneath Mistfall Peak was already occupied.

Thin streams of water descended along the cliffside in delicate ribbons, the sound like constant breath. Several personal disciples were seated in meditation circles carved into the stone.

Lin Meiyu waved awkwardly when she saw Xue Lian approach.

"You're early," she whispered once Xue Lian settled beside her.

"Habit," Xue Lian replied simply.

Zheng Rui sat across the terrace, eyes half-lidded as his Qi circulated sharply, the air around him faintly trembling with restrained intensity. His breathing was aggressive, his cultivation method rigid and forceful.

The pale disciple from the night before, whose name Xue Lian had not yet learned, sat alone near the edge. His cultivation was careful but unstable, Yin and Yang drifting unevenly through his meridians.

Master Liu arrived without ceremony.

She did not announce her presence, but rather observed quietly for several breaths before speaking.

"Begin."

The terrace fell into silence.

Xue Lian guided the Yin Qi according to the manual's rhythm. The sect's environment was rich in compatible energy, and the progress was immediate. The cool current slid through her meridians with far less resistance than she had known before.

Within less than an hour, a faint breakthrough tremor rippled through her dantian.

Qi Gathering - Middle Stage.

She did not react outwardly.

Master Liu, however, noticed.

Her gaze lingered for half a breath longer than before, but she said nothing.

After cultivation came discipline drills.

Balance, footwork, controlled movement, the foundations of movement techniques without the techniques themselves. Each disciple was required to repeat the same sequences hundreds of times with precise timing.

Zheng Rui moved aggressively, each step cracking against the stone with excess force.

Lin Meiyu struggled with stamina but compensated with stubborn persistence.

Xue Lian moved between them with controlled efficiency, neither hurried nor lax.

It was during the fifth repetition that Zheng Rui finally spoke.

"You don't cultivate like someone without backing,"

He remarked quietly as they passed in crossing formations.

Xue Lian did not turn her head.

"I cultivate like someone who has no room for mistakes."

Somewhere between a scoff and a breath, he almost laughed.

"Careful answers," he said. "You'll fit in well."

She did not take that as a compliment.

At midday, resource distribution was held at the eastern pavilion.

Each personal disciple presented their token and received cultivation support aligned with their path. When Xue Lian's turn came, the attendant paused briefly over the register.

"Personal disciple of Elder Liu?"

"Yes."

A trace of surprise passed through the woman's eyes before she handed over the allocation.

Her portion was larger than Lin Meiyu's.

Smaller than Zheng Rui's.

Balanced.

Fair.

That mattered more than abundance.

As Xue Lian turned to leave, a figure intercepted her path.

It was a young woman in slightly more elaborate robes, her expression calm but her eyes sharp with silent appraisal.

"Xue Lian," she said lightly. "I am Sun Yiyao. Elder Fang's personal disciple."

Xue Lian inclined her head politely.

"Senior Sister Sun."

Sun Yiyao's gaze moved from Xue Lian's face to the token at her waist, then to the pill bottle in her hand.

"New personal disciples tend to draw attention," she said. "Some earn it. Others borrow it."

The implication was clear.

Xue Lian met her gaze without tension, without smile.

"If Senior Sister believes I borrowed something," she replied calmly, "she is free to observe me longer."

Sun Yiyao studied her for a brief moment, then smiled faintly.

"Good answer."

With that, she stepped aside.

Lin Meiyu, who had overheard the exchange, exhaled quietly only after they had walked several steps away.

"She's known for testing people," she whispered. "You handled her well."

Xue Lian's steps did not slow.

"I did not handle her," she said quietly. "I answered her."

That evening, Master Liu summoned Xue Lian alone.

The elder's chamber was filled with the scent of lotus incense and wet stone. She poured tea before speaking.

"Your cultivation progressed today," she said. "Faster than expected."

Xue Lian lowered her gaze.

"I was guided well."

"Do not deflect," Master Liu said gently. "Talent matters. But restraint matters more."

She studied Xue Lian's face for a long moment.

"Tell me," she continued, "what do you seek within the Serene Lotus Sect?"

Xue Lian did not hesitate.

"I seek the strength to live without being at the mercy of others."

The words were plain.

No heroic defiance.

No ambition of glory.

Master Liu nodded slowly.

"That is an honest answer."

She placed a thin jade strip on the table between them.

"A movement foundation art. Not common among personal disciples. Consider it… encouragement."

Xue Lian accepted it with both hands.

"Thank you, Master."

As she rose to leave, Master Liu spoke once more.

"Xue Lian."

She paused.

"Power changes people," the elder said calmly. "Pain changes them faster. Be careful not to let either hollow you out."

Xue Lian bowed deeply in response.

That night, back in her quiet courtyard, Xue Lian sat beneath the moonlight and unrolled the jade strip.

The movements were subtle.

Deceptively gentle.

Perfectly aligned with Yin flow.

Within her, Master Yao observed in silence.
