Chapter 71 - Ch.71 A Test Written in Blood

Senior Sister Shen's presence vanished into the western reeds.

The moment her Qi signature thinned beyond sensing range, Wu Chi moved.

He did not explode into motion.

He vanished.

The distance between the rock outcrop and the shoreline was crossed in three silent steps, his footwork collapsing space with brutal economy. The mask slid over his face as he moved, porcelain white swallowing his features just as his killing intent surged.

The mid-stage foundation woman never heard him.

She felt the Fear first.

A cold, suffocating weight slammed into her back, crushing the breath from her lungs as blackened Qi wrapped around her meridians like binding chains. Her eyes widened just enough to register the shadow behind her.

Too late.

Wu Chi's blade punched through her spine at the base of the neck and exited through her throat in a single, clean thrust. There was no scream, only a wet gasp as her body went limp. He twisted once and withdrew, letting her collapse soundlessly into the reeds.

Blood darkened the water in slow, spreading tendrils.

The two remaining men froze.

For half a heartbeat, their cultivation instincts screamed at them to flee.

Then the Fear Qi hit.

Black mist rolled off Wu Chi's body like smoke from a burning grave, his normal Qi surging beneath it in a turbulent, distorted tide. His presence swelled violently, crushing their senses with something that did not belong in the natural order.

Foundation Establishment.

And something else.

"F-formation!" one of them shouted hoarsely.

They snapped into position with panicked precision, blades raised, Qi flaring as their sect's defensive pattern locked into place. Wind curled unnaturally around them as their Cloud Valley movement art activated, their bodies blurring in and out of drifting leaf-shadows.

Wu Chi charged straight into it.

No hesitation.

No testing.

He released everything.

The Fear Qi tore free of its restraint, bleeding into his circulation and igniting his muscles with savage force. Black smoke coiled around his limbs as he struck, his movements no longer merely fast but predatory, every step leaving behind faint afterimages of warped shadow.

The first man slashed at him from the left, blade cutting in from an angle meant to cripple.

Wu Chi did not block.

He let the strike land.

Steel bit into flesh.

The wound should have slowed him.

It didn't.

He drove forward through the pain and seized the man's wrist as Fear surged through the contact. The cultivator's scream choked off instantly as terror strangled his voice at the source. Wu Chi wrenched the arm sideways and rammed his blade under the man's ribs, carving upward with brutal force.

The second man struck at Wu Chi's back in the same instant.

Too slow.

Wu Chi's shadow twisted unnaturally across the ground, his body pivoting with inhuman torque as he used the dying man as partial shield. The incoming blade skidded across his shoulder instead of severing the spine.

Wu Chi paid for it in blood.

Then paid him back in kind.

Fear-aspected Qi erupted from his dantian in a concentrated release, blasting outward in a suffocating wave that ripped through both cultivators' defenses. Their formation shattered instantly, movement technique collapsing under the foreign pressure as panic tore through their minds.

"You're... not... human...!" the last man sobbed.

Wu Chi was already on him.

One step.

One cut.

The blade passed cleanly through the man's throat.

Silence fell.

Breathing ragged, Wu Chi stood amid three bodies, black smoke still curling from his shoulders as the Fear Qi receded back into controlled orbit. Blood soaked the reeds around his boots, the lake surface rippling gently with fading disturbance.

He did not linger.

He stripped the tokens first, moving with methodical speed. Three Cloud Valley medallions vanished into his pouch. Then he seized the herb baskets, sweeping only the most valuable strands into his pack.

No trophies.

No indulgence.

Only proof.

Only mission.

He turned and withdrew deeper into the forest, deliberately choosing a route that led away from Tiger Peak and toward territories where stronger beasts were known to roam. His presence blurred and vanished into broken undergrowth and shadow long before any pursuer could trace him.

Minutes later, Senior Sister Shen returned.

She sensed death before she saw it.

The blood.

The crushed reeds.

The unnatural residue of terror clinging to the air like a lingering afterimage.

Her eyes hardened instantly.

She knelt beside the nearest corpse, fingers hovering just above the wound without touching it. Her expression remained controlled, but the tension in her shoulders tightened.

"Clean execution," she murmured. "No hesitation."

Her gaze flicked across the area.

No sign of pursuit.

She rose slowly.

"This was not a beast."

She did not call out nor did she chase.

She turned back toward the forest path that led to Cloud Valley, her movements measured and alert, every sense stretched taut.

This was no longer a gathering mission.

This was a warning.

And somewhere deep within the forest, far beyond sensible pursuit, Wu Chi was already gone.
