Chapter 28 - 28

Liz returned from the café with Evelyn feeling heavier than when she had arrived. Every word Evelyn had said echoed in her mind. Griffin's obsession, his dark possessiveness, and Vinny's unquestioning trust—all laid bare, like pieces on a chessboard.

She stepped into the station, Finn already waiting with Shane. "Everything?" Shane asked, eyes sharp.

Liz nodded, spreading her notes across the table. "Every detail. Evelyn confirmed Griffin's patterns. She described moments when his protectiveness was… suffocating. She even admitted he noticed everything Vinny did, sometimes before Vinny realized it himself."

Finn whistled low. "That's… intense. And dangerous."

Shane tapped her pen. "Exactly. But it's not just obsession. It's control. He monitors, predicts, and isolates. It's subtle, but it's total."

Liz pointed to her notes. "Madam Grace sees only the good side. She overlooks the shadows. But Evelyn notices. That's why she trusted me. She wants Vinny protected without angering Griffin."

Shane nodded. "Good. That's the angle we'll use. We start small. Collect evidence indirectly, map his routines, watch for moments where control slips. Then we build a complete case."

Finn raised an eyebrow. "What about Vinny? He's too close. Any direct questioning could… trigger something."

"Exactly," Shane said. "We leave him out for now. He's protected by proximity, yes, but he's also vulnerable. Right now, the key is observation and documentation. Every pattern, every controlling gesture, every shadow of obsession."

Meanwhile, across town, Griffin moved through his apartment with an edge he hadn't shown in days. He had noticed subtle changes—missing items, a sense of eyes watching them from outside, Liz's unexpected visit to Evelyn. Small things. Nothing concrete. But enough.

His hands flexed. He wasn't going to let anyone come between him and Vinny. Not West. Not Shane. Not anyone.

Vinny sat at the table, quietly reading. Something in the apartment felt off. He glanced at the window. Shadows lingered too long. Griffin's focus on him was… heavier, more intense than usual.

Griffin's gaze caught him. Dark eyes locking onto Vinny. "Everything okay?" he asked. The question wasn't casual. It pressed. Demanded attention.

Vinny nodded, swallowing. "Yes… I think so."

Griffin moved closer, brushing a hand over Vinny's. "I need you to stay close. Just for now. There are people outside who do not understand. They do not see you as I do. They will try to interfere."

Vinny felt the weight of his words. The possessiveness, the darkness. It frightened him, yet a strange warmth spread through him. He didn't move. He didn't resist. He let Griffin's presence envelop him.

Outside, Shane and Finn reviewed city maps, noting locations Griffin frequented, patterns of exits, entrances, and timings. Liz added Evelyn's notes about routines, observations, and moments of intensity.

Shane leaned back. "We have enough to start surveillance. Carefully. Step by step. We can't let Griffin know yet. If he senses we are close… he could react in unpredictable ways."

Finn nodded. "The moment he senses exposure, he becomes darker. He could do anything to maintain control."

Liz exhaled slowly. "And Vinny wouldn't even see it coming. He trusts Griffin completely."

Shane's gaze hardened. "That's why we must move meticulously. Observe first. Protect Vinny. Document. Every gesture. Every interaction. Every shadow. This is only the beginning. But soon… we will see the full picture."

Back in the apartment, Griffin finally allowed himself a moment of quiet. He watched Vinny from across the room, dark thoughts brushing his mind. Anyone who tried to come between him and Vinny would pay. Anyone who watched, anyone who threatened the bond he had built, anyone who tried to interfere would be handled.

Vinny glanced up at him, sensing the tension. Griffin's dark gaze softened just slightly, masking the storm beneath. The obsessive love, the intensity, the control—it was all there. And it was unmistakable.

Somewhere outside, the first moves were being made. Shane, Finn, and Liz were beginning their careful dance. And Griffin, unaware of the full extent, already felt the pull. The game was starting.

But in his mind, Vinny was already his. Always.

And the darkness, both protective and obsessive, would only grow stronger.

Chapter 28 sets up the next escalation: Shane's investigation steps up, Liz becomes a critical link to Evelyn, and Griffin begins to sense that someone is moving against him without fully knowing who or how.
