Chapter 37 - 37

Detective Shane did not sleep that night.

Not because she could not.

Because she refused to.

The university photograph sat on her desk.

Next to it sat twenty three others.

Every single one featured Vinny.

And in the background of almost half of them…

Griffin.

Watching.

Not interacting.

Not participating.

Watching.

The pattern was impossible to ignore now.

Finn stood beside her desk holding two coffees.

"You look awful."

"I am awful."

"You should sleep."

"I'll sleep after I ruin somebody's life."

Finn handed her a coffee.

"Healthy attitude."

"I learned from the best."

"That's concerning because you learned from yourself."

Shane ignored her.

Her attention remained fixed on the photographs.

A realization had been growing for days.

Now it was impossible to ignore.

Griffin had not stumbled into Vinny's life.

He had been orbiting it.

For years.

And that terrified her.

Because people did not accidentally stalk someone for years.

People did not accidentally appear in dozens of photographs.

People did not accidentally build their lives around another person.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

And she intended to find out exactly what.

Her phone buzzed.

An email.

Unknown sender.

No message.

Only an attachment.

Shane froze.

Slowly opening it.

Finn leaned closer.

"What is it?"

The attachment contained a video file.

Three minutes and twelve seconds long.

No name.

No explanation.

No sender.

Shane clicked play.

The footage began.

University campus.

Eight years earlier.

A student event.

Crowds moving everywhere.

Laughter.

Music.

People talking.

Then the camera zoomed.

Directly toward Vinny.

Young.

Happy.

Alive.

Completely unaware he was being filmed.

The footage continued.

Following him.

Tracking him.

Watching him.

For three straight minutes.

The camera never once looked away.

Not even for a second.

Silence filled the room.

The video ended.

Neither woman spoke.

Finally Finn broke the silence.

"Please tell me that's not Griffin."

Shane swallowed.

"I wish I could."

Across town, West sat alone in darkness.

His computer monitor illuminated his face.

Another email had just been sent.

Another breadcrumb.

Another push.

Nothing too big.

Nothing too obvious.

Not yet.

He leaned back in his chair.

Watching the city lights outside.

Things were finally moving.

For too long everyone had been dancing around the truth.

Now they were getting closer.

And Griffin was starting to notice.

That was the interesting part.

West smiled.

Because pressure revealed character.

And he wanted to see Griffin's true character.

Not the charming influencer.

Not the loving boyfriend.

The real Griffin.

The one hiding underneath.

Meanwhile, Vinny sat with Madam Grace inside the shop.

The afternoon crowd had been unusually slow.

Something he appreciated.

His thoughts had felt crowded lately.

Too many questions.

Too many strange feelings.

Too many things refusing to make sense.

Madam Grace noticed immediately.

She always did.

"You look troubled."

Vinny smiled weakly.

"Do I?"

"You inherited that look from your mother."

Vinny laughed.

"I didn't know worry was genetic."

"It is in your family."

The old woman stirred her tea.

Then glanced at him.

"What are you thinking about?"

Vinny hesitated.

Then sighed.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"How long have you known Griffin liked me?"

The question nearly made her choke.

Not visibly.

But close.

Very close.

Vinny noticed.

And suddenly became much more interested in her answer.

Madam Grace carefully placed her cup down.

Choosing her words.

Dangerously carefully.

"Awhile."

"Awhile?"

"Yes."

"Months?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Vinny's stomach tightened.

"Weeks?"

Still silence.

Then:

"A little longer than that."

The room felt colder.

"A little longer?"

Madam Grace looked away.

And in that moment.

Vinny knew.

Whatever answer she was avoiding…

He was not going to like it.

Elsewhere, Griffin stared at his phone.

Another message.

Another photograph.

Another reminder.

West.

The image showed Vinny sitting inside the shop talking to Madam Grace.

Taken only minutes ago.

Griffin's jaw tightened.

Not because of the photograph.

Because of the angle.

Whoever took it had been close.

Very close.

Closer than before.

The realization unsettled him.

He immediately called his grandmother.

The phone rang twice.

Then connected.

"Hello, sweetheart."

"Is Vinny there?"

Madam Grace blinked.

The question came too quickly.

Too urgently.

"Yes."

"Put him on."

Her eyes drifted toward Vinny.

Suspicion growing.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

She handed him the phone.

"Griffin wants to speak with you."

Vinny accepted it.

"Hey."

Immediately Griffin relaxed.

Just hearing his voice helped.

A little.

"Are you okay?"

Vinny frowned.

"Yes."

"Nothing strange happened?"

"No."

The answer should have reassured him.

It didn't.

Because Griffin had started noticing something.

A pattern.

Every time West made a move.

Something else happened.

Something connected.

Something planned.

And he hated not knowing what.

More than anything.

He hated not knowing.

That evening, Liz arrived home to find an envelope sitting outside her apartment door.

No stamp.

No address.

No sender.

Just her name.

Written neatly across the front.

Her heart immediately started racing.

Slowly she opened it.

Inside sat a single photograph.

Nothing else.

No note.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

Liz looked at it.

Then froze.

The image showed Vinny.

University age.

Walking across campus.

Smiling.

Completely unaware.

Several feet behind him stood Griffin.

Watching.

Just watching.

Liz turned the photograph over.

There were words written on the back.

Only four.

The beginning is there.

Liz stared at the message.

Then immediately grabbed her phone.

Calling Shane.

Because for the first time since this investigation started…

She believed someone wanted them to find the truth.

And whoever that someone was…

They had just declared war on Griffin.
