The five fireballs streaked through the air in a burning arc, leaving trails of searing heat behind them. Each one hissed like a meteor about to tear apart the earth itself.
Ultear's eyes narrowed. "Too fast…!"
Her right fist slammed into her palm again.
"Ice Shape: Twin Pillars!"
Two towering columns of ice rose before her, their frosted surfaces gleaming in the fire's glow. The first three fireballs smashed into the ice with deafening booms, shattering the columns into shards. Steam hissed violently as ice and flame clashed, a white mist spreading across the battlefield.
But the last two fireballs slipped through the haze
Ultear clenched her jaw and flipped her hands outward.
"Ice Shape: Crescent Shields!"
Curved barriers of ice wrapped around her like wings. The fireballs detonated against them, sending her sliding back several meters across the scorched ground.
When the smoke cleared, Ultear's breathing was heavy, her body strained from the continuous shaping. But her eyes still glinted with determination.
Noah lowered his hand, unimpressed. "You're keeping up. Good. But you're still only reacting."
He clapped his hands together again. A blue magic circle pulsed beneath his feet.
"Additional: Acceleration!"
His body blurred in an instant, vanishing from Ultear's vision. Her pupils shrank.
Fast!
She spun, ice already forming around her arms. "Ice Sha "
But Noah was already behind her.
He raised a single finger, a golden magic circle spinning at its tip. "Don't just defend. Attack me, Ultear. Or you'll never earn the title of S-Class."
Before his words finished echoing, a golden beam shot out, grazing her shoulder as she twisted away. The ground where she had stood erupted in a thunderous explosion.
The shockwave flung her forward. Ultear dug her heels into the ground, ice spikes forming beneath her boots to anchor her. Her chest rose and fell quickly, but she grinned despite herself.
"…You're holding back, Noah."
Noah tilted his head. "Of course. This is your exam, not a death match. But " His golden eyes sharpened. "If you don't push me, you won't pass."
Ultear's breath misted in the freezing air. Then, with a fierce cry, she slammed both hands together.
"Ice Shape: Rose Garden Bloom!"
From the shattered ground, dozens of thorned ice vines erupted, weaving into a storm of crystalline petals that spun toward Noah like a blizzard of blades. The entire training ground filled with the glitter of icy roses, each one sharper and colder than steel.
The guild members outside the barrier gasped in unison.
"She's going all out already!"
"Ultear… incredible…"
Noah only smiled faintly, the glow of a new magic circle shimmering across his palm.
The magic circle beneath Ultear pulsed with golden light. The ground rumbled as if the earth itself was preparing to awaken.
"Word Magic: FIRE BURST!" Noah's voice rang out, calm yet commanding.
The circle erupted.
A pillar of fire roared upward, swallowing the space where Ultear stood. Heat blasted outward, so intense that even through the protective barrier, the guild members outside flinched and shielded their faces. The clash of blazing flame against biting cold filled the training ground with a deafening hiss.
Ultear's Rose Crown strained under the onslaught. The first layer of roses cracked and melted, steam hissing violently. The second layer shuddered, splintering under the flames' pressure.
"Hold… together!" Ultear gritted her teeth, forcing more magic into her creation. Her veins bulged at her temples as the icy branches twisted tighter, trying to resist being incinerated.
But Noah's flames were merciless. One after another, her layers shattered, until only a thin shell remained. The crowd outside the barrier leaned forward, breathless.
"Is she… going to be burned through?!" Gray clenched his fists.
"C'mon, Ultear…!" Natsu shouted, eyes wide.
At the very last moment, Ultear thrust her palms forward and cried out
"Ice Shape: Absolute Seal!"
A crystalline dome surged from the last of her magic power, freezing the air so cold that frost crackled along the barrier itself. The fire clashed against the dome in a blinding explosion.
BOOOOM!
The ground shook violently. Steam and smoke swallowed the arena, obscuring everything inside.
For a few moments, there was only silence… then the mist slowly began to clear.
Ultear knelt in the middle of the scorched ground, panting heavily, sweat dripping down her face. Her Absolute Seal had been reduced to shards of ice scattered around her. She was barely upright, her magic nearly drained.
Opposite her stood Noah, untouched, his calm gaze fixed on her as golden light faded from his hand.
"…Not bad," he said at last. "You didn't collapse. You stood through it until the end."
Ultear's lips trembled, both from exhaustion and pride. "D-Does that mean…?"
Noah's expression softened. "You've passed, Ultear. From today onward you're Fairy Tail's newest S-Class wizard."
For a heartbeat, the words hung in the air. Then the guild outside the barrier erupted into cheers.
"Ultear!!!"
"She did it!"
"Another S-Class at fifteen years old!"
Gray and Leon grinned despite themselves, pride shining through their rivalry. Erza clapped solemnly, while Natsu pumped his fists with fiery excitement.
Ultear closed her eyes, her exhaustion finally overtaking her as tears slipped down her cheeks. "I… I did it, Mother."
From the crowd, Uru smiled warmly, her eyes misting as she watched her daughter stand tall, finally recognized as an S-Class wizard.
