Chapter 154 - Chapter 154: Grimoire Heart

The stars kept everyone pinned to the ground longer than anyone expected.

Nobody made a move to get up. Nobody started anything. The usual noise and energy of the guild had gone somewhere quieter, settled down into the kind of comfortable silence that only happens when people are genuinely at ease with each other. The bonfire crackled. A soft breeze moved through the trees at the edge of camp, carrying a faint coolness and the dry whisper of leaves. The sky Noah had cleared stretched overhead, vast and crowded with light.

Even the people who weren't usually the type to sit still and appreciate something found themselves lying there without complaint, just looking up.

Noah felt the sleepiness return properly this time, slow and heavy, the kind that comes from a full day finally letting go. No interruptions. No challenges. No flaming fists aimed at his face. Just the fire and the voices of his guild in the background and the stars overhead.

He was asleep before he knew it.

He didn't dream.

***

Morning came in through his eyelids.

Noah surfaced slowly, aware of sunlight before he was aware of anything else. Warm. Direct. Already well above the horizon. He blinked a few times and looked up at a sky that had shifted from black to the pale clean blue of early morning, and lay still for a moment just processing that.

Then he noticed the blanket.

It was draped over him from shoulder to knee, thin but warm, and it took him about three seconds to recognize whose it was. He made a mental note and sat up, rolling his shoulders.

The campsite was already active. A good portion of the guild was awake and moving around, and the smell of something cooking had already reached the area. Noah checked the time. Past seven. He'd slept longer than he usually did, which, given the circumstances, was probably fair.

He looked around. Natsu was already gone from the spot beside him, which was not surprising. Natsu woke up like a fire catching, fully and all at once, and never stayed in one place longer than necessary.

Noah folded the blanket carefully, tucked it under his arm, and went to help with breakfast.

The morning ran simply and well. Food was made and eaten. Tents came down. Things got packed away. Noah gathered everyone in a loose group and teleported the whole guild back to Fairy Tail in one clean movement, the familiar stone walls and high ceiling of the hall replacing open sky in an instant.

People dispersed quickly after that, everyone falling back into the rhythms of their regular lives, breaking off in different directions with the easy confidence of people who knew exactly where they were going.

Noah found Erza, the Sorano sisters, Wendy, and Carla, and they headed home together. Ultear and her two juniors were going the same direction, and so were Simon and his sister, so the walk back turned into a comfortable group affair, voices overlapping, nobody in any particular hurry.

About halfway home, Noah held out the folded blanket toward Erza.

"You covered me last night, didn't you."

It came out as a statement more than a question.

"You were just lying there with nothing over you," Erza said, in the matter-of-fact tone she used when she considered something too obvious to require justification. "It gets cold once the fire dies down. I didn't want you catching something."

"I appreciate it. I'll wash it and get it back to you."

"Please do." She looked at him with an expression that had shifted from practical to something with a bit more weight behind it. "But while we're on the subject. Noah, you don't look after yourself properly. I've seen this before. You get absorbed in your research and forget to stop. Last night you just fell asleep outside on the bare ground without a second thought."

"It wasn't bare ground, there was grass."

"That is not the point."

Ultear glanced over from his other side. "She's right. We've both noticed."

Sorano, walking a step behind, nodded without being asked. "Same."

Noah looked at the three of them. They were all looking back at him with identical expressions of measured scrutiny, the kind that didn't leave much room for deflection.

"We've never seen how you operate on quests," Erza continued. "Whether you actually take care of yourself out there or whether you do exactly this kind of thing when no one is watching."

"That's a fair concern," Ultear said.

"Very fair," Sorano agreed.

Noah held up both hands. "When I'm on a quest, I set up the tent, I use the sleeping bag, I do everything correctly. Last night was a specific situation. The conditions were comfortable, I was tired, I fell asleep before I'd made any conscious decisions about it. That's all it was."

The three of them studied him for a long moment, cross-referencing what he'd said against whatever internal assessment they were running.

Apparently it passed.

"Fine," Erza said, though the look didn't fully leave her face.

"But be more careful," Ultear added.

"Noted," Noah said, and meant it, if only to end the scrutiny.

"Brother Noah."

He looked down. Wendy had moved up beside him, Carla in her arms, and was looking up at him with the particular gentle seriousness that she brought to things she genuinely meant.

"Being sick is really uncomfortable. Please take care of yourself."

Noah reached over and settled his hand on top of her head, ruffling her hair lightly.

"I know," he said. "I'll be careful."

The rest of the walk home was easy. By the time they reached Noah's house, the mood had shifted back to the comfortable warmth of the morning, the small lecture already absorbed and put away. Ultear and her juniors said goodbye at the corner. Simon and his sister peeled off a street later. Noah and his group went inside.

He washed Erza's blanket the same afternoon, dried it, folded it, returned it.

Then he sat down with his books and his research and let the rest of the day go.

***

A few days passed the way good days do, quickly and without incident.

Erza, newly S-Class and apparently unwilling to waste a single moment of it, headed out with Ultear to take on her first official S-rank quest. Familiarization with the procedures, the paperwork, the particular weight of taking on that tier of job. Everyone else settled back into their own patterns. Training, quests, daily life at the guild.

Then Noah's communication mark pulsed.

He was in the middle of a chapter when it came through, Erza's voice sharp with urgency, cutting through the quiet of the room.

"Noah, get here now. Two very troublesome enemies."

He put the book down without marking his page, locked onto Erza's location through the mark, and moved.

Instant movement swallowed the distance in a single step.

He arrived in ruins.

That was the first thing that registered. What had been a city was now a collection of collapsed walls and broken structures, debris scattered across streets that still had furniture and personal items visible inside the wreckage. Recent destruction. The kind that hadn't had time to settle yet. Fires burned through the remains of buildings, and Noah noticed immediately that the color was wrong. Not orange, not red. Black flames, eating through stone and wood with a quality that had nothing natural about it.

Ultear was standing in the middle of a cleared space, facing two people, her magic already present in the air around her.

One of the two was broad across the chest and shoulders, pale-skinned, dark hair cut hard against his skull, wearing a fitted suit with a cape over it. He carried himself like someone who had never been in a fight he hadn't expected to win.

The other one had a head of long golden hair that went in multiple directions at once, and eyes that were a deep red with ringed pupils that caught the light oddly. On his right chest, visible above the collar of whatever he was wearing, was a guild mark. Noah looked at it and placed it immediately.

Grimoire Heart.

Erza was standing a few feet to the side, away from the standoff, holding a child against her chest. Small, pink-haired, face buried in Erza's shoulder, the muffled sound of crying audible from where Noah stood. Erza had one arm wrapped around the girl and was murmuring something soft and steady, her free hand moving in slow circles on the child's back.

When she saw Noah, something in her posture changed. Not dramatically, not obviously, but the particular tension she'd been carrying in her shoulders eased a degree, like a door that had been braced against something was no longer bracing quite as hard.

Noah took in the whole scene and then searched his memory.

He found what he was looking for after a moment. The two people opposite Ultear matched what he knew, and what he knew was specific enough to be useful. Two of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, Grimoire Heart's most powerful operatives. Kawazu and Zancrow.

Zancrow. The God Slayer. Black flames.

Noah looked at the burning buildings around him and connected the dots without needing to think hard about it.

He also noted, with the particular appreciation he had for situations that arranged themselves ironically, that one of Grimoire Heart's Seven Kin was currently standing across from another former member of that same group. Ultear had been one of them, once. Now she was here, in Fairy Tail colors, facing two of her old colleagues over the ruins of a city they'd just burned.

How interesting, he thought. He kept the observation to himself.

"Tell me what happened," he said to Erza.

She kept her voice low and steady, one eye still on the standoff across the clearing.

"Ultear and I finished the S-rank quest and were heading back. We came through this city and found it already under attack. We moved in to investigate and found those two in the middle of it." Her jaw was set. Her eyes, when they moved to the golden-haired one, had a particular quality in them that had nothing to do with assessment and everything to do with anger. "They were killing people. We engaged to push them back and managed to get this one out."

The child in her arms shuddered at something, and Erza instinctively tightened her hold and went back to the low murmuring.

"I remembered what you told us," she said. "That if we run into something we can't handle, we call for help. We don't try to be heroes. We don't solve it alone." She met his eyes. "So I called."

Noah looked at her for a moment.

"You did exactly right," he said.

He meant it fully. This was precisely why he'd built the communication function into the guild marks, why he'd repeated that instruction until everyone knew it by reflex. Not because he doubted anyone's courage. Because courage without backup gets people killed, and a situation that becomes an accident because someone refused to ask for help is a preventable tragedy, which is the worst kind.

Erza had read the situation correctly. She'd protected the survivor she could protect, held the line with Ultear, and called him in instead of pushing into something that could have gone badly wrong.

He turned his attention to the two figures across the clearing and assessed them properly.

Strong. Genuinely strong, both of them. Slightly below Ultear's current ceiling, roughly level with Erza at her best. Against the two of them together, fresh and without the limitations of protecting a civilian, the outcome would have been uncertain at best.

Against Noah, the math was considerably simpler.

He stepped forward.
