This time they came from the sides.
Wyverns skimmed the ground with their claws clipping rocks and shattered trees as they rushed the flanks. Soldiers barely had time to react before claws raked through formations. One wyvern seized a man in its hind talons and lifted him screaming into the air.
A thunderous crack echoed.
Lightning split the sky as Duke Phillips stepped forward, his coat snapping violently in the wind.
"Left flank, fall back three steps!" Duke Phillips commanded.
A bolt of lightning struck the wyvern's wing. The creature shrieked in pain, spiraled wildly, and crashed into the dirt, crushing two soldiers beneath its weight before going still.
"Archers, fire in volleys!" Duke Phillips shouted.
Arrows darkened the sky.
