Michael was halfway through reading an old communication record when his phone rang.
He looked at the number and did not recognize it immediately. For a second, he considered letting it go to voicemail. Almost nobody called him directly anymore unless they had something they wanted from him, and most of those people had learned to use intermediaries.
The number came again.
Michael answered.
"Hello?"
"Are you following me?"
The voice was M.
Michael stopped reading.
"What?"
"I asked if you asked people follow me."
There was irritation in her voice, but underneath it was something closer to worry. She sounded like someone who had spent too much time looking over her shoulder and had finally decided she was tired of guessing.
Michael leaned back in his chair. "No."
"Don't lie to me."
"I am not lying."
"Then explain the people behind me."
