Chapter 15 - The truth between us

The entire ballroom stood still.

Ella's fingers loosened from the mic, heart thudding louder than the music that had stopped mid-beat.

Her mother—Veronica López—stood at the entrance of Las Estrellas Academy's grand Spring Gala in a sleek crimson gown, head held high, her presence electrifying the air like a storm waiting to crack the sky open.

Ella couldn't move.

She hadn't seen her in almost two years. Not since she walked out of their apartment with her luggage and kissed Ella on the forehead like nothing was ending.

Now… she was here?

Now?!

Ryan stepped forward beside her, his voice low. "Is that who I think it is?"

Ella didn't answer.

Because Veronica had already begun walking—heels echoing on marble tile, every step purposeful.

And then—face to face.

"Hello, mi corazón," Veronica said softly, eyes full of emotion.

Ella blinked. "Why… now?"

"I needed to tell you the truth. And I needed to do it before someone else twisted it."

The crowd watched in hushed curiosity as the reunion unfolded like a private drama in a public theatre.

Veronica turned to the crowd, lifting her chin.

"I am Veronica López," she announced. "Some of you know me from the news. Others know me from the scandal."

A ripple moved through the room.

"But no one knows the full truth—not even my daughter. Until tonight."

Ella shook her head. "No—don't make this about you. You left. You left me."

Tears burned her throat, but she kept her voice even.

"I had no choice, Ella," Veronica said. "There were people threatening me. The company I worked for—your father's company—they framed me for something I didn't do."

Ella stepped back, heart spiraling. "Dad's dead. Don't drag him into this."

"I'm not," her mother said softly. "I'm dragging Clarissa's father into it."

The room gasped.

Ryan's mouth parted. "Wait—Mr. Duvall?"

Veronica nodded. "He covered up embezzlement and blamed it on me. I fled to protect you. To gather evidence. And now—" she held up a flash drive, "—I have it all. And I know he's using Clarissa to continue his game."

Clarissa's shriek cut through the room.

"She's lying! She's a gold-digging fraud! She abandoned her own daughter!"

"No," Ella said, turning to face her enemy, her voice strong, steady. "She survived. And you? You were just a pawn in your father's game."

Clarissa's hand trembled at her side. She looked like she might lunge. But security stepped forward—because someone had tipped them off in advance.

Naomi.

Lexi.

Ryan.

The circle had fallen.

And Clarissa was escorted out—screaming.

Later that night, after the chaos had settled and the ballroom was almost empty, Ella stood alone in the garden under the fairy lights.

Veronica walked toward her again, more hesitant this time.

"I know it's a lot to take in."

Ella stayed quiet, staring at the fountain.

Then—"Why didn't you tell me? I had to grow up fast, Mom. I had to become stone just to survive this school."

"I know," Veronica whispered. "I watched every livestream, every blog post. Every moment you were bullied. I couldn't come back until I had proof. I didn't want to risk them silencing you too."

Ella's voice cracked. "You should've trusted me."

"I didn't even trust myself."

They stood there in silence for a long moment.

Then Ella did something she didn't expect.

She reached out.

And hugged her mother.

Not because everything was fixed.

But because sometimes… love starts again with the tiniest crack in the armor.

Ryan found her a while later.

They didn't speak for a moment. Just stared at each other under the stars.

"She's strong," he said.

"She used to be my entire world," Ella replied.

"And now?"

"She's a chapter I'm still reading."

Ryan smiled slightly. "Can I be in your next chapter?"

Ella's cheeks flushed.

She didn't answer with words.

Instead, she leaned forward—slowly, deliberately—and pressed her lips to his.

This time, it wasn't stolen.

It wasn't desperate.

It was chosen.

Hers.

His.

Theirs.

But in a dark corner of the academy's surveillance room…

A red light blinked.

A hidden camera inside Ella's dorm had been activated remotely.

And someone in a private villa far away watched the kiss on screen—eyes narrowing, a single gold ring shining under the light.

Clarissa's father.

"This isn't over," he muttered, sipping his scotch.

"This is just the beginning."
