By the time Adrian Vale reached his desk, the story had already spread.
He didn't need to hear it to know. He felt it in the way conversations stalled as he passed, in the subtle recalibration of glances no longer dismissive, no longer curious, but measuring. Word traveled fast at Kael Dynamics, especially when someone dared to speak out of turn in Lucian Kael's boardroom and walked out intact.
Some called it reckless.Others called it brilliant.
No one called it safe.
Adrian sat down, opened his laptop, and forced his focus onto the screen. Attention was a currency best spent sparingly. Still, even concentration couldn't dull the faint awareness humming beneath his skin the echo of Lucian's presence, the memory of that voice standing too close, of instincts brushing like live wire.
Across the floor, Ethan Hale leaned casually against a desk, watching him.
"You've got nerve," Ethan said after a moment. "Or a death wish."
Adrian didn't look up. "Is that your professional opinion?"
Ethan smirked. "Kael doesn't like surprises."
"He likes results," Adrian replied evenly.
"That's true," Ethan conceded. "But he decides which results matter."
Adrian met his gaze at last. "Then we'll see what he decides."
Ethan studied him, then laughed softly. "You'll either rise fast here… or disappear."
When he walked away, the warning lingered like smoke.
The summons came near evening.
This time, there was no assistant. No formal message. Just Lucian Kael standing at the end of the aisle, dark suit immaculate, eyes fixed on Adrian with unreadable intent.
"Walk with me," Lucian said.
They moved through the corridors in silence until Lucian pushed open a private conference room. Smaller. Darker. The city lights muted behind tinted glass.
"Sit."
Adrian did.
Lucian remained standing, arms crossed, studying him as though recalculating an equation that refused to balance.
"You embarrassed one of my senior executives today," Lucian said calmly.
"I corrected him," Adrian replied. "There's a difference."
Lucian's eyes sharpened. "You challenged my authority."
"I protected it."
The silence thickened.
"You assume I need protecting," Lucian said.
"I assume you expect loyalty that isn't blind."
Lucian stepped closer, the restrained force of him filling the room. His gaze dipped just once to the subtle signs of omega beneath Adrian's control before lifting again, colder than before.
"This company will try to break you," Lucian said. "Not because you're an omega. Because you're dangerous."
Adrian's lips curved faintly. "So are you."
The words landed between them, reckless and undeniable.
Lucian straightened abruptly, as if reminding himself of a line he refused to cross. "You won't stay in Strategy alone."
Adrian rose slowly. "Then where do I belong?"
Lucian turned toward the window, the city reflected in his eyes. "Close. Where I can see you. Where no one can undermine you."
He paused.
"You'll work under my direct oversight."
Adrian studied him. "A promotion or a leash?"
Lucian glanced over his shoulder. "That depends on you."
Adrian inclined his head. "Then we're both taking a risk."
He left without waiting for dismissal.
Lucian remained where he was, the city humming below, something unfamiliar tightening in his chest. He had built Kael Dynamics on control on hierarchy, on instincts locked behind discipline.
Yet now....
The carefully masked façade was wavering, and something was shifting beneath the cold hearted CEO.
Something he could not dominate.
Something he had not planned for.
Something named Adrian Vale.
