I felt it before I saw anything.
The mana in the building did something uncomfortable..... not violent, not alarming, just a pressure shift, the kind that happened when two things at the top of the power scale came into proximity without any shared interest in being polite about it. Like weather systems meeting. The air didn't change. Something behind the air did.
I looked at Mephistopheles.
She was already looking toward the hallway.
Across the room, Sistene had stopped mid-sentence. She and Iris had been talking quietly in the corner since the reunion, the catching-up that happened between people who had been apart long enough that they had too much to say and were trying to find the beginning of it.
Sistene's posture changed. Small. Professional. The instinct of someone who had spent enough time around high-level conflict to recognize its opening pressure.
