Chapter 70 - NICOLE

He met her at a gallery opening in Mayfair that Mbeumo dragged him to on a Thursday evening in April.

The gallery was the kind of place that Armani would not have known existed six months ago and that he now, in his expanding London life, found himself visiting because Mbeumo knew people who knew people who sent invitations to things and because saying yes to invitations was part of the loosening, part of the expansion, part of the process of becoming a person who existed outside of football.

The art was abstract. Large canvases of colour and texture that Armani looked at with the honest confusion of a man who did not understand abstract art but who was willing to stand in front of it and feel something, even if the something was uncertainty. The gallery was full of people who dressed well and who talked about the art with the specific vocabulary of people who understood it or who were performing understanding, the two categories indistinguishable to someone who was new to the room.

He was standing in front of a painting that was entirely blue, different shades of blue layered over each other, the surface textured and deep, when a voice beside him said: "You've been looking at that for four minutes."

He turned. The woman was about his age. Brown skin, dark hair cut short, a face that was striking without being conventional, the kind of face that you remembered not because it conformed to a standard but because it didn't. She was wearing a simple black dress and no jewellery and she was holding a glass of wine that she had not drunk from.

"Have you been timing me?" he said.

"I was standing here first. You arrived and stood next to me and haven't moved. So either you're very interested in the painting or you're very lost."

"Both."

She smiled. The smile changed her face entirely, the seriousness dissolving into something warmer, the composure breaking open to reveal the person behind it.

"I'm Nicole."

"Armani."

"I know who you are." She said it without the particular inflection that fans used when they said it, the breathlessness, the excitement. She said it as information. A fact she possessed. "My brother watches football obsessively. He has your shirt. He talks about you constantly. You scored twice against Brighton last week."

"I did."

"He made me watch the highlights. Seven times." She took her first sip of wine. "You're fast."

"That's what they tell me."

"Is that all they tell you?"

"They tell me a lot of things. Most of it about my positioning in the defensive phase."

She laughed. The laugh was quiet and real and it did something to the air between them that Armani noticed and filed and did not immediately examine because examining it felt premature, like opening a present before the wrapping was fully removed.

They talked. For twenty minutes. Then thirty. Then an hour. Standing in front of the blue painting that neither of them was looking at anymore, the gallery thinning around them, the other guests leaving, Mbeumo catching his eye from across the room and raising an eyebrow and turning away with the specific discretion of a man who understood what was happening and who was not going to interfere.

Nicole was twenty two. Born in Hackney, East London. Her parents were Trinidadian, which made her Caribbean, which made the conversation easier in the particular way that conversations between Caribbean people in England were easier, the shared references, the shared food memories, the shared understanding of what it meant to be from somewhere warm and living somewhere cold.

She worked in architecture. Not an architect yet. A graduate, two years out of university, working at a firm in Clerkenwell, designing things that would take years to build, the patience of her profession the opposite of the immediacy of his. She understood structure. She understood how things were put together. She understood, she told him, the relationship between a building's foundation and its visible form, the way the unseen parts determined the shape of the seen parts.

"That's football too," he said.

"Everything is architecture if you look at it correctly."

"That's the most architect thing anyone has ever said to me."

"You don't know many architects."

"I don't know any architects."

"Now you know one."

He asked for her number. She gave it without hesitation, the phone produced, the digits exchanged, the modern ritual of the beginning of something, conducted in a gallery in Mayfair in front of a painting that was entirely blue.

Mbeumo was waiting in the car. "Who was that?"

"Nicole."

"Nicole who?"

"Nicole from Hackney. She's an architect."

"An architect." Mbeumo nodded slowly, the gesture of a man who approved. "Not a model. Not an influencer. Not someone who wants to be famous. An architect. Someone who builds things." He started the engine. "Good choice."

"I haven't chosen anything. I got her number."

"You've chosen. You just don't know it yet."

He texted her the next morning. A simple message. No games. No waiting the prescribed amount of time. He was twenty one years old and he had her number and he wanted to talk to her and the idea of pretending otherwise felt dishonest.

"I'm still thinking about the blue painting."

She replied within five minutes. "The blue painting was boring. The conversation was better."

They texted through the day. Short messages between his training sessions and her work at the firm. The rhythm of two people getting to know each other through the small exchanges that phones enabled, the gradual accumulation of facts and preferences and opinions that constituted the early archaeology of a relationship.

She liked Vietnamese food. She ran in the mornings, not for fitness but for thinking. She had a sister who was a nurse and a brother who was the one with the Brentford shirt. She had been to Trinidad twice as a child and remembered the heat and the food and the sound of her grandmother's voice but not the house or the street. She was reading a book about Japanese architecture that she described with a passion that made him want to read it even though he had not read a book voluntarily since Cornwall College.

He liked her. The liking was simple and direct and uncomplicated by the things that usually complicated liking: she did not want anything from him that he was not willing to give. She did not want access to his world. She had her own world. She did not want his fame or his money or his status. She wanted conversation. She wanted the person behind the name on the shirt.

They went to dinner the following Tuesday. A Vietnamese restaurant in Soho, her suggestion, small and loud and full of people who were not looking at them because the restaurant was not the kind of place where people looked at other people. They ate pho and spring rolls and talked for three hours and the talking was easy, the conversation flowing without effort, the specific pleasure of discovering that another person's mind worked in ways that interested you and that your mind worked in ways that interested them.

She asked about Jamaica. He told her about Montego Bay and the beach and the hill behind Cornwall College and his mother and Kofi. He told her about the jerk chicken at Yard Food and Callum's notebook and the grandfather's shirt on the wall. He did not tell her about Croft. Not yet. That story was for later, for the stage of a relationship where the difficult things were shared because the trust had been established.

She asked about football. Not the way fans asked, with the specific desire for anecdotes and insider knowledge. The way a curious person asked about a profession they didn't understand, with genuine interest in the mechanics and the emotions and the daily reality of doing the thing.

"What does it feel like?" she asked. "When you score. The actual physical feeling."

He thought about it. The honest answer.

"Relief first. Then joy. Then nothing. The nothing is the strange part. The moment is so big and so fast that your body can't process it in real time. You celebrate because that's what you're supposed to do. But the feeling, the real feeling, comes later. In the car on the way home. In the shower. In bed at night. That's when the moment arrives properly. That's when you actually feel it."

"Delayed gratification."

"Delayed processing."

"Same thing in architecture. You design something. It gets built. You stand in front of it and you feel... nothing. Because the building is too big and too real and too different from the drawing you made two years ago. The feeling comes later. Weeks later. When you walk past it on a random Tuesday and you look up and you think: I made that."

"That's exactly it."

"Then we're in the same business. Just at different speeds."

They walked through Soho after dinner, the London night around them, the streets full of people and noise and the particular energy that central London produced on a weeknight, the city refusing to be quiet even on a Tuesday.

He walked her to the Tube station. They stood at the entrance, the commuters flowing around them, the moment arriving that first dates arrived at, the question of what happened next communicated through proximity and eye contact rather than words.

She kissed him. Briefly. On the mouth. The contact lasting perhaps two seconds and containing, in those two seconds, the answer to the question.

"Goodnight, Armani."

"Goodnight, Nicole."

She went down the steps. He stood at the entrance and watched her go and felt the particular warmth of the beginning of something, the warmth that was different from all other warmths because it was new and because new things carried the specific temperature of possibility.

He drove home. The Mercedes. Windows down. London at night.

He called Kofi.

"I met someone."

"Who?"

"Nicole. She's an architect. From Hackney. Trinidadian parents."

"Caribbean."

"Caribbean."

"Pretty?"

"Very."

"Smart?"

"Smarter than me."

"Everyone is smarter than you. That's not a high bar." A pause. "Does she know about the football?"

"She knows. Her brother is a fan. She doesn't care about the football."

"She doesn't care about the football." Kofi repeated this slowly, the way he repeated things that he considered important. "That's the one. That's the one you want. The one who doesn't care about the football cares about you."

"It's one dinner."

"It's never one dinner. One dinner is a door. You walked through it. Now you're somewhere."

"You sound like her. She talks about buildings and doors too."

"Then she's wise and I'm wise and you're lucky."

He laughed. The laugh that Kofi produced. The sound of his life working.

The relationship developed the way relationships developed when both people were busy and young and building careers that demanded most of their time and energy: in the spaces between. Tuesday evenings. Sunday mornings when Brentford didn't have a match. The hour between his afternoon nap and his evening meal. The gaps in the schedule that professional football left, the small windows of ordinary life that existed between the matches and the training sessions and the recovery protocols.

Nicole came to a match in late April. Brentford versus Fulham at the Gtech. She sat in the family section with Mbeumo's girlfriend and the other partners, the specific community of women who were connected to footballers and who navigated that connection with varying degrees of comfort and experience.

She told him afterward that the match was the loudest thing she had ever experienced and that the goal he scored was beautiful and that the offside decision that went against him in the second half was correct and that his defensive positioning in the seventy third minute was too narrow.

"Too narrow?"

"Your brother told me what to watch for. He said when you get tired you drift inside by two yards and the space behind you opens. He said it happened against Arsenal and he said it happened tonight."

"My brother?"

"Callum. He's basically my brother now. We've been texting. He sends me scouting reports."

Armani stared at her. "Callum Edwards is sending you scouting reports."

"He sends everyone scouting reports. I think he has a mailing list."

"He's fourteen."

"He's fourteen and he knows more about your positioning in the seventy third minute than your actual manager does."

He laughed. The laugh that came from the place where everything was working, the career and the life and the relationship and the city and the money and the car and the flat and the food and the friends and the family and the boy in Barnsley who was sending his girlfriend scouting reports.

Everything was working. The machinery of his life was running cleanly, the parts aligned, the engine smooth, the speed comfortable, the road ahead open and well lit.

He was twenty one. He was in love, or the beginning of love, the stage where the word was not yet spoken but the feeling was already present, living in the spaces between the conversations and the dinners and the Tuesday evenings and the Sunday mornings.

He was in form. Seven goals. Nine assists. The best season of his career. The partnership with Mbeumo producing goals and assists at a rate that placed Brentford among the most productive attacking teams in the league.

He was earning money and spending it wisely and sending it home and investing it on the advice of a financial advisor that Deon had recommended, a woman named Sarah who managed athletes' money and who had looked at his income and his spending and his obligations and had produced a plan that ensured his mother would never work again and that he himself would be comfortable long after his playing career ended.

He was, by any measure available, thriving.

The boy from Montego Bay. In the Premier League. In love. In London. In the best form of his life. Driving a Mercedes with the windows down through a city that had become his own.

The world that the hill behind Cornwall College had pointed toward. The world that his mother had sacrificed for. The world that the work had built.
