Maruzensky walked into the office, one hand needing to feel its way out while her head was buried in the cement wall outside. Her whole person looked as if she had been fished out of the water. The action was fast, but it still left a shadow.
"Huh?"
Hiikawa's gaze moved, and he sat up.
Maruzensky was leaning against the door, her body as straight as a ruler, her head bowed in defeat. Her line of sight cut through the cement floor outside the door, her face showing no signs of dodging the dust. There was… pain.
He was anxious and tried again. This time it was even worse. Her foot hit the cement floor, and a short, painful gasp escaped her lips. Her whole body seemed to tremble with a reddish-iron tremor as she took a step back.
"Are you having a cramp? Did you pull a muscle?"
Hiikawa didn't open his mouth.
"Trainer…" Maruzensky's face was pale, a look of someone who couldn't even pretend to be okay. "I… I don't think I can go on."
"What?" Hiikawa's ears twitched. He leaned down, straining to hear her. "What did you say you can't get to? Are you planning to fly there?"
"No!" Maruzensky's voice was strained. "It's that place, it hurts so bad! My foot… it feels like countless needles are stabbing it, it's so numb, so painful. That feeling… it goes from my ankle all the way up to my thigh bone… I…"
She couldn't finish her sentence. Maruzensky's movements stopped. A few seconds later, a "thud" was heard from her head, and two words came out.
[Green Duckweed Dragon]
Side effect: Touch of Numbness.
The ground-adapting side effect was pushed to its extreme, and the counter-effect was a violent rejection from the tough, coarse surface.
My beloved horse, Maruzensky. How could this be? The rejection… It seems her body is directly rejecting it!
This broken system, he had to give it a few new flowers in the dictionary when he got back.
"I'm sorry…" He pressed his temples, the blood vessels in them throbbing violently. "Okay, stay there and don't move. I'll be right there."
He stood up from his chair, walked to the door, and looked down at Maruzensky's ankle and the cement floor.
"Sit down. Don't move." He pointed to a chair by the wall that was covered in dust, and gave an order. Then, he turned and went into the office.
A few minutes later, he came back with a roll of green plastic mat, a cutting blade, and a roll of industrial-strength tape, which was still whistling in the wind.
In Maruzensky's uncomprehending gaze, Hiikawa squatted down, picked up one of her running shoes, and pressed the cheap plastic mat onto the sole. With a "swish" of the paper-cutting knife, he cut out a perfect shoe shape. Then, he tore off the strong tape and stuck this piece of "leather" sole firmly to the bottom of the shoe.
"Thud." He didn't even bother to pat it down. He raised his head and subconsciously put his socks-covered foot forward. Maruzensky simply knelt down, holding her feet. The girl's legs were slender and hot, and the contrast with the rough pen-like lines was stark. Maruzensky's roar-like "charge" made everyone's ears ring, and then the hot air from her legs went straight to the top of their heads. Their faces turned pale.
Hiikawa's hand paused for a moment on her ankle. A warm touch.
Then, a memory that had been sealed for a long time, the steel needle pierced deep into it. The scene at the airport. The captain's hand. The account of the pull-up. The night of the eight-thousand-dollar one-night stand. The woman's body was swaying at the speed of the wind.
This thought was like a thunderclap from a clear sky, and in an instant, it washed away the little bit of fire that had just been ignited in his heart. His expression, which had just softened, instantly turned back to the indifference of ten thousand years, and it was even more unbearable. He threw her other shoe, a pair of worn-out leather shoes, and without even looking at Maruzensky, he threw it directly at her feet.
"Wear it."
Maruzensky stumbled and put on the other shoe, carefully stepping on the dirt floor. She tried again. The thin layer of leather, the fiery feeling of the steel needle was gone.
"Trainer…" She raised her head and looked at the indifferent Hiikawa, her purple-red eyes filled with moving stars that were about to spill out. This was her trainer. That eternal phantom, the most abstract method, had solved all her problems.
"I've found you, let's go to training quickly." Hiikawa stood up, patted the dust on his hands, and his cold voice interrupted her emotion. "Today's warm-up is simple."
"Try again, take a step." Hiikawa's voice was indifferent, like a high school student who didn't dare to disobey. Maruzensky took a deep breath, looking like she was about to die, and took another step.
This time, her foot was still a few centimeters away from the ground, but it couldn't go down no matter what.
"No… I really can't…" Her voice was already laced with tears. Hiikawa stood up, her face covered in sweat after ten seconds. The face of a peerless driver from ten thousand years ago was showing a trace of fatigue.
"Wait." He said this and turned back to the office, rummaging through the cabinets. A few minutes later, he came back with a large pair of scissors and a roll of tape. In Maruzensky's tearful gaze, he went to the door and cut it open. With a bang, the cheap plastic mat under his feet was torn into a long strip. He pasted this strip of green "leather" on the corridor, directly paved it, and then used tape to firmly stick it down.
"Try this." He pointed to the neat strip of matting, his meaning clear. Maruzensky looked hesitant, carefully stepping on it.
Something happened. The needle-like pain was gone.
"Trainer…" She raised her head and looked at Hiikawa, her eyes shining like bright stars.
"You're talking too much, let's go." Hiikawa impatiently waved his hand, his heart bleeding. This was a limited-edition second-hand item he had bought from a flea market, and now he had to make do with it. Maruzensky followed him, stepping on this temporarily laid out "leather," and walked step by step to the stairs. Then, she stopped. Then, it was the cement floor.
Hiikawa stood behind her, the sun making his shadow look even more severe. He took a deep breath, and the warm air he exhaled suppressed the explosive emotions in his heart. Finally, he would walk up to her.
In Maruzensky's short gasp, he bent down, put his arms around her, and with a grunt, he lifted her up. The posture was standard, a fireman's carry, with her lying flat on his shoulder.
"Hold on tight." Three words came out of his gritted teeth.
"Trainer?!" Maruzensky's face instantly turned red, and the whole person was stunned.
She was so big, but her arms were bare, and her hands were empty. He was filled with anger, and the whole world was trembling. With a loud bang, the whole world fell silent.
"Get dressed."
Hiikawa changed his clothes and put on a loose and comfortable sports suit. He walked out of the office with a spring in his step. Maruzensky, who had followed him, was also wearing a track suit that highlighted her graceful figure. She felt that she was about to be soaked through in a second.
On the way from the office to the training ground, it was as if a nuclear bomb had been dropped. All the passers-by, all the students, trainers, and horse girls, every single one of them was petrified on the spot.
What did they see? They saw that trainer named "Kitano," and his "Poison Tongue" horse girl. They saw… their horse girl being carried?
On the training ground, Hiikawa was like a different person. His eyes were cold enough to freeze someone. Kitano, who was pushing the cart, had an unbearable shock in his eyes.
"Maybe… this is also a kind of strength training?"
"There's some truth to it!" Seiun Sky agreed. As she looked at Hiikawa, her eyes were already full of admiration. "He's not a man who is bound by common sense. He will always lead us to a new version!"
At this moment, the center of attention, Hiikawa, had already carried Maruzensky to the training ground. Finally, he came to the edge of the dirt training track. "Go down." He gently put Maruzensky down and pointed to the dirt track in front of him. "Run, warm up." Maruzensky took a deep breath and jumped onto the dirt track. Her face was still pale, but the pain and resistance were gone.
"Not bad…" Hiikawa's driver's license was completely bottomed out. He forgot that the side effect of [Green Duckweed Dragon] was to reject the hard, rough ground. "I'm such a waste."
Maruzensky was very obedient. After she saw the endless dirt track for a few seconds, a tendon in her brain immediately burst. She couldn't run this twenty laps? She started her career as a trainer, but she was a driver. She turned her head and shouted a few words, and a pair of loving eyes looked at her.
He held up the track board. "Twenty-meter lead, three groups of one thousand meters. Remember, you have to control the rhythm. Don't be too excited when you run faster than me in the final sprint."
"Yes!" Maruzensky immediately stood up, and her unparalleled "leather shoes" stepped onto the track.
Hiikawa nodded, and under the watchful eyes of the Pillars (a reference to a popular anime), he prepared to observe the side effects of [Emerald Dragon]. "The lone wolf must run faster than the pack." With a roar, Maruzensky left a few meters behind the other horse girls. Then, everyone saw her…
Maruzensky had just gone a few hundred meters when she caught up with the first horse girl who was warming up. In the instant of overtaking, her speed suddenly increased, leaving the opponent behind. She was like a ghost. This was the first one, the second one, the third one… Her speed was getting faster and faster, and her running posture was not like she was running with someone.
"Hey! Maruzensky! Come down!" Hiikawa frowned and shouted. "Didn't you hear what I said? Are you deaf?"
The sound of Maruzensky's panting came from his ear. "Trainer… I… I can't control myself! They… they are in front of me, so annoying! I must… I must surpass them!"
Hiikawa looked at the wild beast on the track, which was running crazily. It was as if she wanted to let the horse girls on the track get out of the way. "So it's the new skill of the trainer…"
"By passing through the 'obstacle,' it stimulates the runner's super overtaking ability! It's really high!" Kitahara was nodding his head. He had already found two examples in his small notebook. "Remember to add the obstacle-induced passion."
He looked up, and a puff of smoke came out of his cigarette. "I'm really going to die this time…" No one was alive in this wild vision. This band of savage ancestors, she had to bring them along! He looked at the frantic Maruzensky on the track, and an even crazier thought surfaced in his mind. Who said it had to be like this? Who would eat, go to the toilet, and sleep in the same place? Who said they had to look at this family for a month?
Just as Hiikawa's thoughts were running wild, a figure had already appeared at the entrance of the training ground. It was Rudolf, and you, Maruzensky. They came in together. Rudolf was standing by the track, looking at Maruzensky who was expressing herself to Hiikawa with a strange expression.
"She… she's amazing! Her warm-up is so powerful!"
"Of course!" Rudolf waved his fist proudly. Only the mini-character had a look of doubt in her eyes. "I seem to recall… this situation seems a bit wrong?" she muttered to herself. "Maruzensky-senpai seems… not to be warming up, but more like… escaping."
Her voice had just fallen when she saw Hiikawa move. He strode towards a tool shed by the track, and from inside, he dragged out a… huge, line-drawing cart used to draw the white lines of the track.
Then, under the horrified gaze of everyone, he pushed the heavy line-drawing cart and slammed it onto the track, blocking Maruzensky's path.
"Give… it… to… me… stop!" He used all his strength to push the line-drawing cart, as if he had turned himself into a mobile wall, wanting to block Maruzensky's path.
Maruzensky saw the obstacle that suddenly appeared in front of her, and the annoyance, irritability, and aggression in her eyes instantly reached its peak.
She did not slow down, but instead, she accelerated to the extreme!
"Duang—!" She let out a roar, her body sank slightly, and a silver bullet shot out, heading straight for Hiikawa and the line-drawing cart!
