Chapter 10 - What The Heart Wants

The weekend should have been a relief. No deadlines. No late nights in the office. No Daniel.

But that was the problem.

Amara spent Saturday wandering her apartment in restless silence. She tried everything—laundry, cooking, even reorganizing the books on her shelf—but nothing distracted her from the echo of his words.

Figure out what you want.

She wanted peace. She wanted control. She wanted to stop feeling like her heart was on fire every time he was near.

But most of all… she wanted him.

By Sunday night, the ache of missing him was unbearable. She told herself it was ridiculous. It had only been two days, yet her chest felt hollow without his teasing voice, his sharp insights, his quiet way of seeing through her walls.

And deep down, she knew the truth: running from this was only hurting herself.

Monday morning came too quickly. Amara dressed with unusual care—simple but elegant, a navy blouse that brought out her eyes, soft curls brushing her shoulders. It wasn't for him, she told herself. It was for her confidence.

Still, her heart skipped when she walked into the office and found him already there.

Daniel looked up from his laptop, his expression unreadable. "Morning."

Her lips parted, but no words came. Just morning? After everything? She clenched her hands, gathering courage.

Throughout the day, the distance between them gnawed at her. She wanted to close it. To reach across and undo the coldness she had caused. But every time she opened her mouth, fear held her back.

It wasn't until evening, when most of the staff had left, that she finally found her moment.

Daniel was still at his desk, reviewing blueprints, when Amara walked over. Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it.

"Daniel," she said softly.

He looked up, guarded. "Yes?"

She swallowed hard. "About what happened… on the rooftop."

His jaw tightened, but he stayed silent.

"I pushed you away," she continued, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "Not because I didn't feel anything. But because I felt too much."

For the first time in days, something flickered in his eyes. Hope.

Amara stepped closer, her voice trembling. "You scare me, Daniel. You make me want things I promised myself I'd never want again. And I don't know how to handle that."

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken emotions. Then, slowly, he rose from his chair.

"You think you're the only one who's scared?" His voice was low, rough with restraint. "I haven't stopped thinking about you since the day you walked into this office. Every time you smile, every time you push me away—I feel it. And it terrifies me, too."

Her breath caught. "Then why are we fighting it?"

For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Then Daniel closed the distance in two strides, his hand sliding to the back of her neck as his lips captured hers.

This kiss was nothing like the first. It wasn't hesitant or accidental—it was raw, hungry, desperate. Amara melted into him, her fingers clutching his shirt as if she could anchor herself to this moment.

All the fear, all the tension, all the walls she'd built—shattered.

When they finally pulled apart, both breathless, Daniel rested his forehead against hers.

"You drive me insane," he whispered.

"Good," she whispered back, a shaky laugh escaping her. "Because you do the same to me."

His thumb brushed her cheek, tender now, his gaze searching hers. "Then don't run anymore."

She nodded, her heart steady for the first time in weeks. "I won't."

Later that night, as she walked home beneath the soft glow of the city lights, Amara felt lighter than she had in years.

For once, she wasn't second-guessing. She wasn't hiding.

She had made her choice.

And though she didn't know what the future would bring, one thing was certain:

She and Daniel had just crossed a line neither of them would ever want to erase.
