Chapter 25 - Unspoken Shadows

The apartment was quiet that evening, too quiet. Daniel stepped inside, loosening his tie and calling out, "Amara, I'm home."

Normally, she would answer from the kitchen, or peek out of the living room with that soft smile he had grown addicted to. But today, her voice didn't come.

He frowned, setting his keys on the counter, and walked into the living room. She was curled up on the couch, a blanket pulled tightly around her even though the air wasn't cold. Her gaze flicked up when he entered, then quickly dropped back to the floor.

Something inside Daniel tightened.

"Hey," he said softly, coming closer. "You look… tired."

"I'm fine," she replied too quickly. The smile she forced was faint, fragile, and it didn't touch her eyes. "Just a long day."

Daniel lowered himself beside her, studying her face. She was trying to hide it—whatever it was—but he saw the tiny details: the slight redness around her eyes, the stiffness in her shoulders, the way she clutched the blanket as if it were her shield.

"Amara," he murmured, tilting his head so she couldn't avoid his eyes. "What happened?"

"Nothing," she whispered, her voice thin. "Really. It's nothing."

He took her hand in his, the warmth of his touch breaking through her walls. "You're a terrible liar."

Her lips parted, ready to deny it, but the tenderness in his gaze stopped her. He wasn't accusing, he wasn't pressing—he was just there, steady and patient, like he always was. That alone made her chest ache. She wanted to tell him everything. She wanted to let the fear and confusion spill out. But the thought of Daniel facing Chike, of things escalating, scared her even more.

"I just…" She tried again, her voice wavering. "I guess I'm overthinking. You know me."

Daniel didn't push. He simply squeezed her hand, his thumb brushing slow circles across her skin. Then, without another word, he lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. The gesture was so gentle it nearly broke her resolve.

"When you're ready," he said quietly, "you'll tell me. Until then, I'm not going anywhere."

Her eyes stung, but she blinked back the tears and leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder. His arm wrapped around her, steady and protective, anchoring her to the one place she still felt safe.

For several long minutes, they sat like that in silence. She closed her eyes, listening to the rhythm of his breathing, letting herself draw strength from his presence. But beneath that fragile peace, her thoughts churned. Chike's face wouldn't leave her mind, nor his words. She hated that he still had that power, that shadow over her life.

Daniel kissed the top of her head and rested his chin there. Outwardly, he looked calm. But inside, he was anything but. He knew her too well—this wasn't just "a long day." Something had rattled her, something she was too scared to share. And though she didn't trust herself enough to speak, he trusted his instincts.

Whatever it was, Daniel swore silently that he would uncover the truth.

Because no matter what shadows lurked at her door, he wasn't going to let them take her from him.

Not now. Not ever.
