Chapter 41 - shattered Calm

The apartment felt unrecognizable. Shards of glass glittered across the floor, the overturned table groaned against the wall, and the door stood wide open as if mocking them—proof that their sanctuary had been breached.

Amara sat on the couch, her knees pulled to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. She hadn't said a word since Chike fled. Her body trembled with every shallow breath, her eyes staring blankly at the door.

Daniel crouched in front of her, his hand resting gently on her knee. "Amara, hey… look at me."

Slowly, her eyes met his, glassy and haunted.

"He was here," she whispered, the words breaking as they left her lips. "He was here, Daniel. In our home."

Daniel's chest tightened. He smoothed a hand over her leg, grounding her. "And he's gone. I swear to you, Amara, he's not going to hurt you. Not while I'm here."

But his own voice wavered at the edges. Because deep down, he knew the truth—Chike wasn't finished.

Amara pressed her face into her hands, muffling a sob. Daniel pulled her into his arms, holding her until her trembling eased just enough for her breathing to steady.

When she finally spoke again, her voice was hoarse. "We have to call the police."

Daniel nodded. He had been thinking the same thing. Enough was enough. Chike had crossed a line that couldn't be ignored.

He grabbed his phone, dialing quickly, his free hand never leaving Amara's.

The officers arrived less than thirty minutes later. Two uniformed men entered, their faces stern as they surveyed the wreckage. One of them, Officer Ade, asked the questions while the other, Officer Bello, quietly took photographs of the damage.

"Can you describe the intruder?" Ade asked.

Amara's throat tightened, but she forced herself to answer. "His name is Chike. He… he's my ex. We ended things months ago, but he won't leave me alone."

Daniel's jaw flexed as he added, "He's been stalking her. Leaving notes. And tonight, he broke in."

Ade scribbled in his notebook, nodding. "Did he threaten you directly?"

Amara's voice trembled. "He said… he said I belong to him."

Something flickered in Ade's eyes, but his tone remained professional. "That's enough for us to act. We'll file this as harassment, breaking and entering, and attempted assault."

Amara exhaled shakily, relief and dread tangling together.

Daniel asked, "Will you be able to find him?"

"We'll put out a report," Ade replied. "But if he's determined… you'll need to be careful. Change your locks. Don't be alone if you can help it."

Amara flinched at the word alone. Daniel's hand immediately tightened around hers.

When the officers finally left, promising follow-up, the apartment fell into silence again. Amara sank deeper into the couch, exhaustion dragging at her.

Daniel sat beside her, pulling her into his side. He kissed the top of her head, lingering there. "We'll get through this. Together."

Her voice was small, almost childlike. "What if he comes back?"

Daniel's arm wrapped around her shoulders, steady and firm. "Then he'll have to go through me. And the police know now. He won't be able to keep hiding in the shadows."

For the first time that night, Amara allowed herself to lean fully against him. The tears came quietly, soaking his shirt, but Daniel didn't move. He held her through it, his own heart heavy with the weight of everything.

He hated that she was afraid in her own home. Hated that Chike had reduced her to this trembling version of herself when he knew her strength, her fire.

And deep inside, a resolve hardened.

Chike might think obsession gave him power, but Daniel had something stronger—love. A love he would fight to protect, no matter what it took.

As the city outside carried on, indifferent to their storm, Daniel whispered a promise into Amara's hair.

"He won't break you. He won't break us. Not ever."

Amara closed her eyes, clinging to his words as if they were the only thing keeping her afloat. And though fear lingered in the corners of her heart, a spark of hope remained.

Because Daniel had never once let go of her hand. And she believed, somehow, he never would.
