Cherreads

Chapter 46 - Epilogue- months later

The garden had begun to bloom again, bright splashes of color painting the edges of the yard. Amara knelt in the soil, her fingers brushing over the tender leaves of basil she had planted weeks ago. The scent clung to her skin, sharp and fresh, grounding her in the quiet joy of the morning.

Behind her, laughter drifted from the porch. Daniel leaned lazily against the railing, watching her with that same look he always had—as if he couldn't quite believe she was his.

"You're going to turn into a gardener at this rate," he teased, sipping his coffee.

Amara glanced back at him, a smirk tugging her lips. "And you'll eat everything I grow, so don't complain."

He grinned, setting his mug down before walking over. He crouched beside her, brushing a streak of dirt from her cheek. "I'd eat anything you made. You know that."

Her heart swelled, as it always did. The nightmares had faded—not vanished completely, but softened, like shadows at the edge of the light. Sometimes she still woke in the night, her chest tight with old fear. But every time, Daniel was there, steady and warm, whispering her back into the present.

The police had eventually caught Chike, a phone call months ago delivering the news. Amara remembered the rush of relief, the weight finally lifting after years of being hunted by memories and by him. It wasn't triumph she felt—it was freedom.

Now, her life wasn't measured in fear anymore, but in small joys. The smell of soil. The taste of coffee shared in the early hours. The laughter that filled their little home.

Daniel reached for her hand, threading his fingers through hers. "Amara," he said softly.

She turned to him, and his eyes held the same certainty they had that night months ago when he promised she would never be alone again.

"I love you," he whispered.

Amara smiled, leaning forward to kiss him, dirt and all. "I love you too."

And as the sun rose higher, spilling gold across their garden, Amara knew she was finally living the life she had once thought impossible. Not running, not hiding.

Just loving. Just free.
