Chapter 30 - Fragments of Iron and Flesh

The next day dawned hazy over Kharvoss. The fortress walls groaned with the shifting heat, the banners of Mor-Khalis hanging heavy in the stale morning air. For the survivors of the assault, it was a day of bruises, bandages, and hangovers. The barracks reeked faintly of sweat and spilled ale, laughter replaced by groans as operators nursed aching heads.

Captain Ryn shook off his own sluggishness, his stride steady as he crossed into the medical wing. The metallic hiss of doors parted to reveal rows of recovery cots, each occupied by wounded men and women. But it was not his operators he had come to see. His boots carried him deeper, past the ordinary wards, until he reached the reinforced chamber where the warrior lay.

The man was a ruin of flesh and steel. Limbs lost, chest bound in heavy synth-weave, augmetics sputtering quietly as medics monitored his vitals. Yet his face, pale beneath the scars, was set in a defiant calm even in unconsciousness.

Ryn paused, arms folded, eyes narrowing. "You're still breathing. After all that." His voice was low, almost respectful. "Willpower like that… I've never seen it."

A presence stirred beside him. A doctor stepped forward, her coat a mix of synth-fiber and armored plating, bristling with tools. Her features were marked by chrome implants along her temples, her eyes a soft green glow of retinal augments. Sleek tubes connected to a portable med-rig on her back, its hum punctuated by soft bursts of sterilizing mist.

"Stable," she said, checking her holo-slate. "But not unharmed. His body has endured beyond its limits. Neural stress overload. And his AI implant… it's damaged. Severely."

Ryn turned to her, his brow furrowed. "Doctor… may I see the implant?"

Her eyes flicked up at him, gauging his intent. "Are you an expert in neural AI interfaces?"

A faint smirk touched his lips. "My father taught me a thing or two."

The doctor studied him a heartbeat longer, then gestured. "Very well. Follow me."

They entered a sterile lab filled with glass panels, diagnostic arms, and humming containment units. At the center rested a disassembled implant chip, suspended within a stasis field.

Ryn stepped closer, gaze narrowing on the crude architecture of the device. Its frame was jagged, half-fused with iron filaments and obsolete processors. It looked more relic than machine.

"This chip…" he murmured. "It's old. Built before the Great War."

"Yes," the doctor confirmed, adjusting the holoscreen. "An antique model. Outdated, inefficient, but deeply integrated with his cybernetic lattice. If we attempt to replace it with modern architecture, there's no guarantee the body will accept it."

Ryn's jaw tightened. "Then repairing it is the only chance."

Inside his mind, EP-Psi stirred, voice clear and precise.

[EP-Psi]: "Captain, the chip's matrix is archaic but functional. With reconstruction, I can restore its neural lattice… perhaps even enhance it. An upgrade. We can also graft a new AI into the lattice, something adaptive, something the warrior will need."

Ryn's eyes flickered as though listening to something distant. He exhaled slowly, then spoke aloud. "Doctor… I'm off duty today. Give me access to this lab. I'll need the whole day."

Her brows lifted. "You intend to repair it yourself?"

"With help." Ryn tapped the side of his head lightly. "I have… a specialist."

The doctor hesitated, then nodded. "Very well, Captain. I'll authorize clearance."

Hours bled away beneath the sterile glow of the lab. Ryn stood at the console, sleeves rolled, hands steady over delicate instruments. Micro-solder arcs glimmered as he worked the cracked lattice of the chip. Data streamed across holo-panels, flickering with lines of forgotten code.

[EP-Psi]: "Matrix stabilizing. Core fragments contain memory logs. Accessing…"

Lines of data unfolded before them, fragmented but still intact. Ryn's eyes narrowed as identity tags resolved from the static.

Codename: The Death-WroughtFull Name: Ragnir GlasrathAge: 22Origin: Glasrath – Ice-Mountainous WorldAffiliation: None. Clanless Mercenary.

The words glowed stark against the panel. Ryn's throat tightened slightly, though he said nothing. His focus returned to the broken lattice, his voice quiet.

"Hold together, warrior. You've fought too hard to fall here."

[EP-Psi]: "Stability achieved. Repairs at fifty-three percent. Integration possible. Captain… the matrix can host a new sub-AI. I recommend code designation Fenrir. Combat-adaptive. Aggression harnessed, instincts sharpened. It will bind him to survival."

Ryn's lips pressed into a thin line. "Do it. But keep it clean. No chains. No shackles."

[EP-Psi]: "Acknowledged. Constructing Fenrir."

The lab lights dimmed into surgical focus, a pale circle bathing the disassembled chip. Ryn's hands worked with calm precision, instruments sliding into place as EP-Psi projected schematics across his visor.

[EP-Psi]: "Structural integrity of the core lattice is stabilizing. Initiating diagnostic sweep."

The holographic chip rotated slowly in the air, fractured sectors pulsing red. One by one, they shifted amber, then green, as Ryn bridged connections with steady hands. Sparks flared at the micro level, soldering threads finer than a strand of hair.

[EP-Psi]: "Repairs progressing. Captain, I have compiled a list of potential enhancements compatible with the archaic frame."

Lines of data scrolled in front of Ryn's eyes:

Neural Flux Calibration: Increases response speed and synaptic clarity.Combat Predictive Suite: Enhances instinctive battle timing.Overclock Protocols: Allows forced spike in reaction up to 50 percent above baseline, at risk of strain.Memory Partitioning: Creates a stabilizer buffer to reduce trauma loop from past neural damage.

Ryn exhaled slowly. "That's a lot for a half-broken relic."

[EP-Psi]: "Feasible. But efficiency will never match a modern implant."

He leaned back for a breath, gaze fixed on the fractured architecture slowly coming alive again. His voice was quiet but firm.

"Upgrade him. Push him above norm. Before his program… before whoever owned him broke him. He deserves better."

[EP-Psi]: "Acknowledged. Integration will give him a thirty-percent boost under normal conditions, fifty percent in forced combat states. Fenrir is ready for assimilation."

Ryn nodded once, eyes narrowing with focus. "Good. But understand this. We don't owe each other. I'm not binding him with debts. I'm just repairing it. For free."

[EP-Psi]: "Statement logged."

Hours passed in silence but for the hiss of tools and the low hum of diagnostics. The broken chip slowly regained cohesion, filaments weaving anew, processors reforged in delicate arcs of light.

At last, the hologram glowed emerald.

[EP-Psi]: "Repair complete. Upgrades installed. Fenrir sub-AI integrated. The Death-Wrought is operational."

The doctor re-entered, glancing between Ryn and the humming stasis field. "You've done it?"

"Not me," Ryn murmured, lifting the chip from its containment with both hands. "Him." He gestured to the unconscious warrior.

Together, they fitted the repaired implant into the neural port at the base of the man's skull. The chamber filled with the sharp hiss of sealing servos, the click of reconnecting filaments, and then a long, pulsing hum.

The warrior's chest arched, breath tearing from his lungs as the implant surged to life.

Ragnir

Darkness cracked apart, searing light flooding his vision. At first there was only pain, flashes of memory, betrayal, the stink of orc blood, the snap of a pirate's neck beneath his hand. Then… silence. A different silence.

And in that silence, a new voice.

[Fenrir]: "Wake, hunter. The kill waits. The pack endures. The pack leader waits… he stands before you."

Data streamed in arcs of green across his vision, clearer than before. His body still broken, but his mind, sharper. Stronger. Instincts no longer frayed but honed, tempered steel instead of splintered iron.

Shapes resolved. The first figure he saw was a man standing above him. Blond hair, eyes sharp, the scent of battle not yet washed away. He knew the look of soldiers. This one had fought. Had bled.

His throat rasped. "…You."

Ryn leaned forward, resting his forearm on the edge of the med-cot. His tone carried the weight of respect, without pity. "Welcome back, warrior."

Ryn's gaze lingered on the pale figure resting on the med-cot. The hum of the reattached implant still whispered faintly in the air, its glow settling into a steady rhythm that mirrored Ragnir's breathing.

Ryn leaned closer, voice low but steady. "How does it feel?"

Ragnir blinked slowly, data still adjusting in his vision. His scarred lips curled faintly, though the effort seemed to weigh on him. "…Clearer. Stronger. Like the storm in my head has finally broken."

Ryn gave a short nod. "Good. Heal for now. It'll take me two days to craft a new arm and legs for you. After that… you'll stand again."

From the side of the chamber, the doctor arched a brow, half-incredulous. "So, you know how to repair a neural implant, and you claim you can craft cybernetics?"

Ryn only smiled faintly. "The old smith at the Mor-Khalis citadel forge taught me a thing or two."

The doctor gave a short laugh, shaking her head. "There must be quite a few people who've taught you 'a thing or two,' Captain."

Ryn just shrugged, neither confirming nor denying, and turned toward the door. His boots echoed softly against the med-bay floor as he left.

Beyond the threshold, the halls were quiet, still heavy with the aftermath of the battle. Just outside, Captain Thalara Ashvyrne and her second-in-command were passing by. Thalara's eyes caught a glimpse of Ryn leaving the chamber, his stride steady, expression unreadable. He did not pause to speak, merely inclined his head faintly before continuing down the hall.

Thalara's gaze followed him a moment longer, then she stepped into the medical wing. She approached the chamber where Ragnir rested.

"He's awake?" she asked the doctor softly.

The woman nodded. "Yes. And the implant… it was Captain Ryn who repaired it."

Thalara's expression flickered with surprise before she masked it again, her voice carrying quiet relief. "I see."

She moved to Ragnir's side, her crimson hair catching the sterile glow of the lights. "Ragnir. I am grateful you live."

The warrior's eyes opened, sharper now, glowing faintly from the reborn implant. His voice was rough, but certain. "My lady… I am not oathbound to you. My uncle was. With his death, I am free. And all debts are paid."

Thalara studied him, her face unreadable for a long moment. Then she inclined her head, her tone solemn. "Yes. You owe no debts. You are always free."

"What are your plans?" she asked quietly.

Ragnir's lips curved into the faintest shadow of a smile, his voice resonant though his body was still broken.

"The pack leader calls."
