"My lord," Shalltear began softly after a long, comfortable silence, her crimson eyes reflecting the warm glow of the fire. "If it's not rude… may I ask you something?"
I glanced at her from where I sat tending the flames. Her tone was uncharacteristically gentle, her parasol resting by her side as the storm outside murmured faintly. "Go ahead," I said, turning one of the meat skewers over the fire.
She hesitated for a moment, then looked at me earnestly. "Would you tell me a story? About your adventures back when you were still in Yggdrasil?"
For a second, I just blinked at her. The request was unexpected. I couldn't remember any of the Guardians ever asking Momonga a question like that—not in the original timeline, not in the stories I knew. It felt… different. Curious, I tilted my head slightly.
"Why do you want to know that, Shalltear?" I asked finally, my voice calm but laced with genuine curiosity.
The scent of roasting meat filled the air, smoke curling lazily toward the cracked ceiling. Shalltear folded her hands neatly in her lap before speaking again, her crimson eyes glowing faintly in the firelight.
"Among the Forty-One Supreme Beings," she began carefully, "your story is the only one unknown to any of us. Every other Supreme Being has left traces of their legacy—items, notes, stories, even fragments of memory. But you, my lord… you remain an enigma."
She looked into the fire as if afraid to meet my gaze. "I once heard from my creator, Peroroncino-sama, that you were the strongest being in all of Yggdrasil. But other than that, there is nothing—no records, no witnesses, no companions who speak of you. You appeared, fought, and then disappeared from the world, leaving behind only your name."
Her voice softened, almost reverent. "Even in Nazarick, your existence feels… distant. None of us know who you created, if anyone at all. Since there are no beings who bear your mark, we cannot ask them either. So, if it isn't too forward, I wish to hear it from you directly, my lord."
Her words carried a rare sincerity that made me pause. I looked at her—really looked at her—and couldn't help but smile. The flickering firelight danced across her pale features, casting her in a strangely human light.
A quiet chuckle escaped me. "So, that's what you've been wondering all this time, huh?"
She nodded slightly, her gaze lifting to meet mine. "Yes, my lord. I've been curious since forever."
Leaning back slightly, I let out a soft sigh. "You know," I said, "Who said I didn't create anyone?" I said with a grin, leaning back on my hands. "Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they don't exist."
Shalltear's eyes widened. "Wait… you mean to say… you actually created someone here? In Nazarick?"
I nodded slowly, enjoying the look of astonishment that crossed her face. "Of course. You think I'd let the rest of the guild have all the fun? I may not have created as many as Ulbert or Touch Me, but I made my own—though their existence isn't common knowledge."
Her curiosity flared immediately. "Then… who are they, my lord? Are they still within Nazarick? What kind of being did you create?"
I gave her a teasing smile. "That's a secret."
"Eh?! My lord, that's unfair!" Shalltear protested, her face puffing slightly in a rare display of indignation.
Her reaction made me laugh again—a genuine laugh this time, the kind that made the tension in the air soften. "You're adorable when you pout, Shalltear," I said lightly.
"M-My lord, please don't tease me like that!" She stammered, though the corners of her lips twitched upward despite her words.
After the laughter faded, I gazed into the flames for a moment, my voice turning softer. "But… since you wanted a story, I suppose I can tell you one. How about…"
I paused, letting the silence stretch just long enough to catch her full attention.
"…how I met the founding members of Ainz Ooal Gown."
Her eyes sparkled instantly. "Truly?! You would tell me that, my lord?"
I nodded. "You wanted to know my story, didn't you? Then it's best to start from where it all began."
